Mike Shanahan benches Griffin, makes Cousins Washington Redskins starting QB

I actually think this is smart. Why not give Cousins a shot. Showcase him for a few games, if he does well maybe you can recover some much needed draft picks.

Shanahan is done in Washington, he was almost done last year.

This is him giving a finger to his HC and QB who have both proven to be clowns. I have hope for RGIII to grow up though.

I bet you MS can't wait to get the hell out of that franchise and right now I think it's more about throwing Kirk Cousins a bone, rather than showing up RG3(Snyder though for sure), because he probably believed he should have started fair and square, and was forced otherwise.

If you think about what happened, I'm surprised he's not just packing his bags right now.

Just thinking about what he inherited:

- a team with salary cap violations
-an owner-drafted QB he didn't want
-lost his draft picks for a QB he didn't want
-forced to play a QB even when he was too hurt, and he didn't want
-forced to play a QB AGAIN when he wasn't healthy enough to start, just because the QB was afraid of the backup
-lost face, lost the team, because the owner-QB are buddy buddy

How the hell are you supposed to do your job and build your team this way? I can see owners demanding this and having this much control if you are a rookie HC. But to do that to a 2 time SB winning coach? Who's up for the next coaching job under Daniel Snyder?

Probably a good decision. RG3 just isn't 100% this year.

1.) Snyder gave Shanahan the keys to the kingdom and stepped away from the team. The cluster that is the Redskins is almost all Shanahan, and sheds a lot of light on why the guy has done almost nothing since his meal ticket (Elway) retired.

2.) RGIII was rushed back before he was ready, and without an offseason, as just a second year player. Despite that, his numbers are right about where Tannehill's are. He hasn't nose dived down into Mark Sanchez/Geno Smith territory.

3.) For all the shots being taken at Griffin, the truth is that the offense is the strength of Redskins. It may be a lowly 23rd in the league in scoring, but the defense is 32nd in scoring defense and the special teams are some of the worst we've ever seen.

Shanahan's playing games in order to save his money, rather than doing what's best for the team. When Griffin should have been on the bench (First weeks of the year, end of last year), Shanahan played him. Shanahan may have permanently damaged a young player's leg and career, and, even though it won't happen, I hope he finds that he's never able to get another NFL job.

I could not agree more regarding Shanahan and his mis-use of his young QB.
Admitedly I have not followed RG3s comments and from what I gather here the kids could use a maturity pill but that's irrelevant to Shanny who needed to be the adult in the room, and wasn't and is now throwing in effect a public temper tantrum.

Run Shanahan's DNA against a database of serial killers and expect to find hits.

Racist....

Cousins is so overrated right now playing him will reduce his trade value.

That could very well be the case but I think you take the shot. It could result in anything from

"He is who we thought he was"

or

"He gets the Matt Flynn/Schaub treatment"

or

"Nothing changes at all"

Perhaps he lights it up and now RG3 becomes expendable (I don't think even the poorly run Redskins would consider that after a 3 game trial but you never know)

Everything you write is accurate. Shanahan, knowing that the end is near, should do everything he can to keep the money that Snyder chose to pay him. He probably will not get another NFL head coaching job, so the $7 million he receives for 2014 is his severance package.

I thought Shanahan was a great fit for the Redskins when he signed on in 2010. There was a strange collection of top-heavy veteran talent that the Redskins did a pretty good job of re-organizing. They've drafted better under Shanahan than his predecessors, and they made the playoffs. My take is that Dan Snyder just can't help himself when the urge to interfere comes on, and Shanahan doesn't have the huevos to act in the best long-term interests of the team.

Mother of Pearl, Shanahan's an even bigger tool than I thought he was:

On Griffin disagreeing with the decision to shut him down: “I would be disappointed if Robert did not want to be in there with his teammates. I would be the most disappointed guy. I’d be the most disappointed guy in myself if he played the last three weeks and he had an ACL or LCL and it sent him off for his second year in a row without an offseason.”

So he's going to toss his OTHER young QB out there to get a popped ACL or LCL. :bricks:

This guy doesn't just need to be fired. He needs to get his ass kicked.

More gems from Shanahan. Throwing his owner under the bus:

On why the franchise quarterback is the only player he consults with Snyder about: “Dan could care less about the other positions.”

Throwing the doctors and his QB under the bus:

On whether he second-guesses any previous decisions about playing Griffin on a bad knee: “You can always go back and always question yourself,” Shanahan said. “The doctors said he was 100 percent. So you go with the doctors, who felt — and Robert felt — he was 100 percent.”

On regretting his decision not to pull Griffin from last season’s playoff loss to the Seahawks: “I should have went with my gut. But I thought he earned the right to play because he convinced me he was OK. But I think, you’re talking about honestly right here, it cost us the game.”

I think I need a mental shower now, just to get the 'stink' of this guy's comments out of my brain.

To be fair to Shanahan, if there's any owner that deserves to go under a bus, it's Snyder.

Shanahan is the rat he looks like.

To be fair to Shanahan, Cousins isn't as much of a scrambler as Griffin, so the likelihood of a popped ACL/LCL is a lot lower.

Honestly the most offensive thing is the fact an NFL head coach doesn't know the difference between could and couldn't care less.

This. Asking me who I side with, Snyder or Shanahan, is like asking me who I'd rather have perform my vasectomy: My ex-girlfriend or an angry orangutan.

Shanahan is done in the NFL… Like Parcells, Gibbs, Johnson, and other coaches who were considered good in the 80s and 90s he just comes across as a petty and grumpy old man who cannot adapt to the players or the current day NFL.

don't know how he still has a job....we are so lucky to have a guy like kraft..BB..Brady all here in NE..a blessing compared to this nightmare

Shannahan is making Rex Ryan's life a bit easier lately.

Rg3 isn't the problem, the problem is their WOAT level defense.

Shanahan is one of the most overrated coaches ever. He's won one playoff game in his non SB winning seasons

I'm watching Shanahan's press conference from today. He was fired up.

Come on people just because Shanahan missed the playoffs in 11 seasons and won 1 playoff game in the 16 seasons he has coached in the NFL without John Elway and Terrell Davis does not mean he sucks. It just means his current QBs and RBs are not as good as Elway and Davis. Stop blaming Shanahan he is only a coach.
