I expect most to disagree with me here on this one but I personally I am not a fan of Josh McDaniel’s, nobody has been a bigger beneficiary of the “Brady Affect” then McDaniel’s.
These are some the primary reasons I am not a charter member of the Josh McDaniel’s fan club:
1. Personnel decisions; Greg Salas, Spencer Larsen, Brandon Lloyd, Daniel Fells and even Michael Hoomanawanui have all been less than stellar additions to the squad.
2. Undervaluing Wes Welker; rightfully so or not I place much of the blame for Welker not being here on McDaniel’s, and I must assume that it was Josh who lobbied for the often injured Danny Amendola.
3. The use of personnel; I am very tired of seeing players like Blount and Develin on the football field, while players like Ridley and Bolden pace the sidelines.
4. Locking into JAG types; he attempts to will these subpar players to productivity by giving them snaps and opportunities that should be going to a better player.
5. Lack of an offensive identity; the offense looks confused it has for 2 seasons now, are we a trying to be a power running team, a spread offense or a vertical offense, currently it looks more like a 13 year olds custom playbook in Madden 25.
6. Play calling; I find myself saying what was that an awful lot.
Many align McDaniel’s with 2007’s record breaking performance and ignore the fact he fielded an offense consisting of a 28 year old Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Donte Stallworth. We have never won a Super Bowl with McDaniel’s as the offensive coordinator and we’ve only made it to one his two tenures at the helm combined.
If you remove 2007 in which Brady had more offensive talent around him than any other season, Brady had more productive seasons with O’Brien in which he average more passing yards, touchdowns, yards per pass, a higher quarterback rating and less interceptions.
It is my position that McDaniel’s rode Brady’s coattails to a head coaching job at which he failed and now he is back riding them again, as I said I do not expect this to be a popular opinion so feel free to express your disagreement but I would appreciate it if you can do so in a respectful and courteous manner.
