Dez Bryant vs Devin McCourty

I had endzone seats at the Atlanta game, so I had a great view of McCourty. I can't say that he looked like the best player on the field (that would be Julio Jones), but he was close and he looked like the clear best player on the defense from my vantage point.

He covers a tremendous amount of ground, he just swoops in from across the field and clobbers people, and he is clearly the quarterback of the secondary.

Wasn't this the secondary that gave up so many long plays (particularly at safety) not so long ago? Funny, I haven't noticed too many of those lately.

I guess you must have left before the 49-yarder to Julio Jones that went right over McCourty. That play showed up as an unassisted tackle in the box score.

The play where he had perfect positioning and was victim to an amazing play by an incredible receiver? That one?

Strange one to poke at the safety with. :confused4:

Yes--precisely. At that point in the game, his only job is to prevent that kind of pass from being completed. That's what playmakers do.

Well Devin has been a playmaker, especially if you watch last season. Devin had excellent coverage, just can't defend that catch and pass, it was perfect.

Any by that logic, you'd probably take Jerod Mayo or Rob Ninkovich over Demarcus Ware, right?

Yep, because they are playmakers, especially rob.

Because if you've got a gripe about that draft, Cunningham is where you should be looking, not McCourty.

No--you should be looking at Taylor Price, picked at #90.

#91 Navorro Bowman
#93 Tony Moeaki
#95 Jimmy Graham

I'm struggling to take this seriously.

He was beaten for a 49-yard pass play with less than two minutes to go in the game. Do you think that BB struggled to take that play seriously in the film room yesterday?

Still struggling. You do realize that sometimes the other guy wins even if you do everything right, no?

I sensing far more railing than analysis here.

You need to watch that play again. McCourty did everything right and was draped over Jones. Hell, the guy's hand almost touches the ball as Jones pulls in a circus catch.

Dez is the current version of Chad Johnson (Ochocinco). Chad was a talented receiver who ran wrong or poor routes and had trouble grasping the playbook.
He had multiple years of 1K yards receiving and Pro Bowls but was a bust in New England with Tom Brady at QB.

I truly believe Dez would not be the star here in New England that he is in Dallas. There were enough warning signs that BB stayed clear of him and targeted DMc instead.

DMc value on the defensive side to New England is as valuable as Dez is to Dallas on the offensive side.

Either you're trolling or you know literally nothing about football. McCourty played that pass perfectly.

If it's true that a player of Dez's caliber would be rendered useless in the Pats offensive system there is something wrong with the offensive system. I happen to think he would do just fine in this offense. It's not like Garrett is running the wishbone.

I haven't read this whole thread, but pretty sure every GM in the NFL would take Dez > McCourty straight up and not even have to think about it for 10 seconds.

I'd bet a sizeable amount that Bill doesn't regret that decision in the least. And wouldn't even need to allotted 10 seconds to consider it. ;)

He didn't really make a play on the ball, and at the end, he gets shielded from the ball by the receiver. See for yourself:

QB Ryan to WR Jones, 49-yd, pass - NFL Videos

I don't need to watch, I can remember the play perfectly. Jones made an incredible play, it happens even when the defender does their job as well. Do you think that every play NE makes is solely because the other guy screwed up?

Given how the draft works, why should I be looking at the 3rd round miss rather than the 2nd round miss? Seriously, have you been drinking?

Wellll he definitely did. In the slow-mo of the pic you see Devin's hand coming up and across and being centimeters from the ball but jones just made a terrific play there and all credit to him.

Sometimes as a defender you can be there and the other guy is just very good. If Jones made the catch over Talib on the left sideline would we have said Talib didn't play that well? Talib made the catch as hard as possible for him and that's what Devin did as well. Jones just made a play on that particular ball.

Man you are just beclowning yourself at this point. If you're going on jihad against a Patriots player, at least pick one of the marginally talented ones.
