Ok, here is the story of that 1963 Patriots/Bills divisional playoff game as NEM wrote it for me to post. He wrote it in the first person so it is actually him that is telling the story.

For the first three seasons in the history of the Boston Patriots, and the American Football League, the Houston Oilers had won all three Eastern Division Championships.

In the Eastern Division, besides the Oilers, were the Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Titans of New York (changed to the Jets).

Finally, the Oiler streak was broken when the Patriots and the Bills ended up in a tie, at the end of the regular season, with 7-6-1 records. (Yes, both had a tie game)

On the last day of the regular season, the Patriots lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Bills beat the New York Jets. In fact, the Bills beat the Jets on successive weekends to close the season with two wins and tie the Pats for the division lead, and a playoff game would have to be played.

Buffalo won the draw and the game was scheduled for the following Sunday at the old War Memorial Stadium, the home of the Bills at that time.

Anyway, I was psyched (24 years old at the time) and I immediately contacted a bus company to get the price of round trip travel on a charter bus, contacted a catering company for box lunches, and made arrangements with the Bills for tickets. The entire package cost each person only $25.00.

I don’t recall the exact number, but there were approximately 45 seats on the bus.

I contacted John Gilhooly, a well known old time sportswriter for the Boston Record-American (now the Herald) and he wrote a piece in his column with my name , phone number, etc, and the details of the trip.

All seats were sold within 24 hours….

Anyway, I arranged for the bus to be at a location on Route 9, in Framingham, at midnight, Saturday and we would leave immediately for the game in Buffalo.

What we didn’t expect was for it to snow that night, and, of course it did.

But I got to the meeting place ok, and surprisingly, everyone else did too, and the bus took off just after midnight , headed to Buffalo.

It was a really fun trip, lots of laughter, food, and all kinds of excitement, and anticipation about the game.

It took a little longer to get there, but we rolled into Buffalo in the morning and immediately headed to the hotel where the Pats were staying to wish them well.

In those days, players did a lot of mingling with the fans, as security was a non entity.

After a couple of hours, land some food, etc…we hopped back on the bus and headed over to the stadium.

It had snowed the night before in Buffalo, and the seats all had some snow on them, as well as in the aisles…..not much, but enough to catch us with something that we should have anticipated, but didn’t.

Anyway, we got off the bus, which had BIG Patriots signs on the side, and went into the stadium with our signs, banners, etc.

And, we decided to take those flags, banners, etc, and take a run around the field with all the Patriot flags and banners flying in the wind. THAT WAS OUR FIRST MISTAKE.

That's the first part of his story. He is writing the second part now for me to post soon. He says he has many, many more.

NEM will be giving me many stories from the 60s today and I will retype them and post them here.

He said that one of the most memorable comes from a chartered bus trip that he arranged to Buffalo for the 1963 divisional playoff between the Bills and the Patriots.

Also, one from a game played in a near hurricane at Fenway Park.

And the day that the stands caught fire at Boston College Field.

I am going out now but NEM will be printing them for me sometime later today and if I have the time I will repost them here.

He is concerned that he may get in trouble for having me do this and it could jeopardize his return date to this forum which is soon. But I am like family and will do it for him anyway and he said that this is a very interesting topic and that he has a lot to add to it.

Actually, this could be the ideal solution to the "NEM problem" -- have all his posts filtered by a responsible adult beforehand (you are a responsible adult, aren't you, Daniel?) :)

Nem was 24 and I was 9 years old . That explains a great deal!

Here is the second part......As written by NEM and posted by me, for him.

As I said, it had snowed the night before and there we were, in enemy territory, running around the field with Pats flags, banners, etc.

I guess you could say that would compare to the German army, running around with Nazi flags, during WWII, in front of the American Lines.

So, we should have expected what happened next. NO, they didnt shoot at us......

But, they did pelt us with hundreds, maybe thousands, of snow and ice balls.

So, we exercised a well known saying, "Discretion is the Better Part of Valor" and we got under cover and headed for our seats.

We discovered that the seats that the Bills had gotten for us were about as high as one could go, in the corner of the stadium. The field, looking down at it, was what you might see from the Goodyear Blimp, WITHOUT BINOCULARS.

Somehow, word go to the Patriot players that we would be, like in the next city...and they immediately told us to come down and sit in the seats that were allocated for their families, friends, etc, most of whom did not make the trip.

So, we moved into those seats, Front couple of rows right at the 50 yard line.

Wow, great seats....right??????

Wrong again. The old stadium seating was low to the field, close to the bench, and with all the players standing up in front of us, we couldnt see diddly squat.

Once again, as the 3rd quarter was about to start, the players came to our rescue, again...and told us to come down, onto the field, and stand next to the bench. WOW, that was something that could happen in those early day, but not now, of course.

So, there we were, on the field, standing next to the bench, mingling with the players, and as most know, the Pats won the game , beat the Bills, and had dethroned the Houston Oilers as East Division Champs of the AFL. That marked the first time the Oilers did not win the division title.

Well, as most also know, we did not fare that well in San Diego, as the Chargers beat the crap out of the Pats for the AFL championship....

But, that one Saturday night on the trip out, the Sunday game, standing on the sideline with the players, and then, to top it all off, TO WIN THE GAME ON THE ROAD...it is a time in Patriot history that I have never forgotten.

I may have forgotten a fe of the minor details after all of these years, but that story is pretty close to the way it actually happened.

And, if anyone wants to here another story of how I ended up sitting on the Pats players bench during a game at Boston College Field, as wqell as some other interesting stories from the very first years of the Patriots, I will be glad to write them and have my friend, and neighbor, Sonny post it for me.

To tell you the truth Yes I am a responsible adult and these stories he is giving me to post seem harmless. In fact he himself is harmless.

And, as I posted when I first began posting my name is Guy but I am called Sonny by my friends.
And, I do not have a computer. I am on his computer. I live next door to him. I am 70 years old a retired Honeywell employee and a Bears fan from Chicago.

 Fair enough -- even the Bears fan bit (Chicago is a great town, and who else should you root for?) Welcome on board and thanks for your help.

I haven't had a problem with NEM (apart from occasionally wanting to throttle him ;) ) but others have and to get to the end of Ian's patience takes quite a lot of doing. I hope that he recognizes this and acts accordingly.

Hi, ghostwriter for NEM. :) Couple of football players named Sonny: Sonny Jurgenson and Sonny Grandelius. My brother was called Sonny because he was named after my father, but at about the age of 14, everybody started to call him by his real name. Sounds like you kept it though. So NEM is tossing you Patriots stories over the back fence? Anything left of the old Honeywell?

No fence, just next door of apartment complex. We have known each other 14 years or so. And., he is really hurting not being able to post here . This site, and the Patriots are his life.

The Honeywell building I was in is now some sort of school. Grand Canyon College, I think.

Oh wow, what great stories......The Vinci game in '85 was truly awesome, I remember watching the guys carry the damn goal post right out and then later hearing about the "electrocution". I used to always pass the "patty wagons" as I exited the stadium and we used to watch all the drunks and idiots pounding away trying to get out. often a quick bribe fro a friend or father, would set them free.

I also recall, right after the game, the crowd would part and in a golf cart would be the brain trust from the press box (Billy Sullivan, Pat Sullivan and others) en route to the main offices. We would either shout sympathies or congrats as they went by. Billy Sullivan ALWAYS had a smile on his face and really appreciated our kind words - he was the true father of football for this franchise.

The posts about the Bills game from NEM also are greatly appreciated....please "Sonny", thank NEM and ask if he could post any and all that he has.

NOCAL - thank you so much for starting these trips down memory lane. Some of us in here have been there from the very beginning ( I was 8 when my Dad took me to the very first Pats game ever played at old BU Field Vs the Bronco's). Others have joined sometime along the way and I am sure love reading about Patriot days long ago told from the FANS of the Patriots perspective.

Italian Pat Patriot,,,,,,there are two seats with your name on it for any game you choose to attend if you ever make it here next season. I am quite serious, these seats are in Sec 134 and you will enjoy I am sure - NO strings attached. Just let me know.

Please do post more everybody....

I remember hearing that the former Major League Pitcher Bobby Witt was somehow involved with the "Goal Post Incident". I'm not sure if this is an "Urban Legend" or not.
