Welcome to the New England Patriots, Marshall WR Aaron Dobson

It was good to see Dobson as the pick. Don't know why he regressed as a senior but those questions will be answered before the start of training camp I imagine.

If this guy can pick up the offense and I don't think they would of wasted such a high pick if they didn't think he could, I think he could playing alongside Tom Brady be one of the best Receivers in this draft. Nobody puts the ball on the money more than Brady within the 20 yard range as long as you are where your suppose to be. With his body type and hands it makes Brady a more effective deep passer if you gain his confidence like Moss did.

Feel pretty confident adding another big body to the goal line offense. Gronk,Dobson,Hernandez and Ballard are some pretty big targets

Well the main thing I worry about Dobson is the level of competition he faced. I mean Marshall doesn't exactly face SEC level competition. How well he adjust to the pro level?

BUT just take a look at his videos. Here's an example:
Aaron Dobson Career Highlights - YouTube

As far as size, athleticism goes. This dude can GO UP and get the ball. He uses his body well and plays big against smaller DBs. Dunno if he was just dominating weaker competition but he plays every bit like a 6'3 receiver. And that last catch on that highlight reel. He just STOLE that TD in the redzone. I'm not sure I've seen a catch like that from a Pats receiver yet.

Moss over Revis comes close, but that was a 'beat the guy over the top' move.

Dobson was covered closely on his play but just ripped a sick TD anyways with one hand.

I wouldn't worry much about what school he comes from. Randy Moss and Troy Brown both went to Marshall.

Liked the way he cuts too.

Best hands in the draft, and he is big and physical. I have very high hopes for this guy. Faster David Givens, one can only hope right

yeah...agreed...except for one player we drafted...that lazy shiftless POS Jamie somebody that we screwed up our first pick with...he played in a conference that is below division three and is a no motor quitter. We would have been better off drafting ANYBODY from the Ivy League than some stuff who bribed officials to be named first team Conference USA...why, they only had six players selected in the first 60 of the NFL draft as EVERY ONE of the "KNOWERS" screams and screeches in every thread they can, the conference USA saucks....even though it has Marshall, that is an exception...but nobody worth anything has ever been drafted from SMU or Tulane or Houston or Rice or Memphis or East Carolina....all horrible football schools with the dregs of the college talent pool.CBS should crapcan their national contract.

The worst of these horrible football dumps is Southern Miss though...just ask all the "experts" here...I mean, who the hell has EVER come out of a dump like Southern Miss?....OK, so Brett Favre played there...but that was before he was a big star in the NFL...and the greatest punter in NFL history, Ray Guy, couldn't even kick it two yards when he played at Southern Miss. The Raiders drafted him to be a placeholder.

I think Belichick should listen and listen hard to the Patriots Pantheon Of Putdown Princes here and cut this bum Jamie before he infects the team with sloth, laziness, poor play and bad habits.

Who does he compare to in the NFL right now? I want to say Boldin but i have no idea

He reminds me of a taller Brandon Lloyd.* Presumably without the eccentric personality. And from BB says, Dobson is smarter too.

*I mean that as a compliment.

Physical and fights for the ball. Bigger and faster than Boldin though. Some were comparing him to Larry Fitzgerald because of the size and amazing catches. You can see some similarities here.

Faster and taller Givens?

It's amazing how small his hands are...yet he makes Randy Moss catches.

As a Marshall fan I've watched Dobson play at Marshall for several years. He has the size and speed to be a very good WR in the NFL. I like the pick very much. However the reports of no drops his senior year is NOT TRUE. He had several drops and some came at key times. He also had some amazing catches! His senior year was a little disappointing to be honest - He was not the leading receiver on the Marshall team as was expected before the season started. I've watched both Troy Brown and Randy Moss play at Marshall and Dobson is not their equal. However, he does have the potential to be an outstanding receiver for the Pats given the quality coaching he will receive here.

He also ran a 4.4 40 time at Marshall, too....

Dobson has the size and speed combination that is ideal in NFL receivers. At 6-3, 210 pounds, Dobson was unable to participate in the 2013 NFL Combine drills due to a hamstring injury, but showed off very impressive speed at the Marshall Pro Day and was timed in the low 4.4-range in the 40-yard dash. Couple that with great hands and he has the capability to be a top receiver.

There is another attribute common to the new Patriots wide receiving corps. They are all smart. Danny Amendola, Donald Jones, Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce are all very smart people. Amendola scored a 27 on his Wonderlic, typical for QBs, was also Team captain. Dobson will graduate Cum Laud with over a 3.0 GPA. Boyce graduated already, and spent his senior year in Graduate School.

The profiles of these Wide Receivers is very atypical. Many NFL WRs are self-centerd, DIVAs, and barely literate.

By example, Ocho Cinco was reputed to have never attended a single class his senior year at college. Was it surprising that he couldn't pick up the complicated Patriots Playbook?

The patriots understand their problem and have addressed it.

1) Use high draft choices to find smart receivers who fit what you want for your offense.

2) Provide additional practices with Brady for the veteran receiver. There will be little problem with Amendola being on the same page as Brady by the time the season starts.

3) Have a QB coach/OC that understanding the offense, and likes developing young receivers.

4) Have a seasoned WR coach (17 years experience, 10 in the NFL).

5) Bring back a former receiver coach for special assignments. Surely, the youngsters, and new receiver qualify.

6) Bring back one of last year's vets to provide continuity (and be a solid punt returner).

The offensive brain trust will decide whether more veteran receivers are needed for competition as time goes on. We might bring in several as we did last year, or not.

They better be smart, or else we are in trouble if they can't figure out the playbook. All 4 receivers you mentioned are brand new, and only Amendola has experience in an offense like ours due to McDaniels.

It's obvious the Pats value intelligence as much as skill. I have a feeling they skipped the 2 receivers from Tennessee (Patterson & Hunter), and guys like Patton and Wheaton, because they were intrigued with Dobson's and Boyce's skill/intelligence levels.

Also the 2 Rutgers guys in the 3rd round have good intelligence and are solid citizens (highly thought of), as well as have leadership skills.

As far as Dobson, he's not just all height and hands, the guy has excellent speed and cutting ability. I love the video of Dobson from the Senior Bowl practices where he's up against 1st round pick Desmond Trufant, on an in cut drill. He sets him up with some hand jukes and some good cuts, and speed. Dobson obviously is an accomplished receiver when it comes to all the skills needed to be a successful receiver. One thing we don't have to worry about is him defeating the press. I love this video.

One thing i will say is that Josh Mcdaniels in my opinion has proven he can draft WR's wit his picks in Denver.

Hopefully this can be a repeat of those picks.
