I understand and strongly disagree with your position. You might consider why Belichick (and the patriots even before him) have used so much of their resources on special teams.

Slater had 19 ST tackles last year so if he duplicates that we'd be paying $119,298.21 per tackle.. That craziness IMO

Twice as high as Ryan Wendell.
Five times as high as Dane Fletcher

Considering we have an extremely young team a lot are on rookie contracts but they aren't exactly all 7th rounders.

Neither of them makes the Pro-Bowl. In case you missed it, for his entire tenure BB has emphasized ST capabilities. Criticize him for not having a viable KR, not for paying an all-league gunner.

Not criticizing BB, Slater or anyone else for that matter just saying I wish his cap number was lower.

Didn't Slater get hurt right before the return in the SF game right after we had tied the game?

yes.

His presence was sorely missed. We saw the importance of having backups on special teams.

Does the name Marquice Cole ring a bell ?

Slater's biggest contribution isn't even making ST tackles. It's his work as a punt gunner where he gets to the returner before the ball and forces a fair catch. He's the best gunner in the NFL and is completely unblockable by even two guys. They don't make a stat to show how great he is.
