How the heck are they supposed to cover Gronk, Hernandez, Welker, Lloyd and Gaffney?

If the OL plays well this year, this offense is going to be sick. A lot of people assume that if Lloyd catches a lot of balls, he will be taking catches away from someone else. I think that the addition of Lloyd and Gaffney will make this offense extremely efficient, greatly increasing the total catches, yards and TDs accumulated. If they can generate a decent run game too..... the Pats will punt only once or twice a game.

Please don't post that here. If BB sees this he'll cut the punter for another TE on the 53.

Don't worry. BB always consults me before making any peronel moves and I'll make sure The Space Emperor of Space doesn't get cut.

Didn't want to start yet another thread so here are some observations for what caught my eye at Tuesdays TC.

It will be difficult to cut a WR as they all looked good today. Wes turned Dowling around about 3 times in the EZ for a catch, Stallworth and Gaffney were catching the outside stuff and made it look easy. On the Go routes both Stallworth and Lloyd made nice catches. No defenders, but Lloyd's catch wouldn't have made any difference. A high arc caught over his shoulder about 35yds downfield in stride. He caught everything anywhere near him...what a find. Stay healthy....

Edelman looked good returning punts and catching out of the slot. Seems faster than last year.

Branch was on the sidelines for awhile and didn't see him in action. I was watching from EZ and he may have been making catches at far end of field when they were doing the GL drills and from the 20YL. Gronk made his trademak catch over middle along baseline which could be seen from opposite end of the field. Hernandez HAS to be resigned....this kid is a stud.

Left early so didn't get to watch RB's in action. I hope Bolden makes it over keeping a FB. Make it so Josh !! :rocker:

My son said to me, it's a shame they can't keep more than 53. I'm sure there will be players that won't make the final cut that will be on other team's rosters come the first regular season game.

All in all a nice day to watch...overcast and cool with a light breeze. Arrived at 1pm after a light lunch at Bar Louie and stands were already packed along with most of the EZ hill.

FWIW, I was there today and posted this video that shows the Lloyd catch:

Pats Practice 2012 - YouTube

We must have been within spitting distance of each other on the knoll....LOL

I remember those drills and moves. Welker had a nice move earlier also.

That Lloyd catch was SWEEEET :rocker:

The WR's all looked good....I'm hoping it was because Brady and WR's were great and not the DB's sucked...heh

A good article from Greg Bedard on the practice #5, which occured today (Tuesday):

Practice rundown #5 - Extra Points - Boston.com

It seems like just about everyone has had good plays and bad, but some of the things that stand out are:

---Edelman as one of the "surging" players in camp, occording to Bedard. In speaking on the one-on-one WR/CB drills, Bedard points out that BOTH Welker and Edelman looked excellent.

---Jones and Hightower have looked pretty well so far, definitely a good sign. Both are winning one-on-one matchups, making plays etc.

---Sterling Moore has been one of the most positive CB's so far. Those who say that "he is on the bubble" are fooling themselves in my opinion. Today he took away Dowling's spot as the first team 3rd CB, and has received a decent amount of 1st team looks the past few days. Dowling himself has been up and down so far, with a good day on Sunday, but not too great of one today.

---Bedard projects that Gronk's ankle is still limiting his somewhat, as he wasn't able to block efficiently at all on one drill. I still think that he should've been kept on the shelf for the first couple/few weeks, but they are medical doctors and experts, so hopefully it isn't an issue.

---Vereen hasn't looked too great running the ball, but has looked very good catching it out of the backfield.

A great example of why people shouldn't read too much into camp reports:

Spikes was back on the field but you can tell he doesn’t feel all the way back – he didn’t quite have his usual high level of energy.

Practice rundown #5 - Extra Points - Boston.com

Tuesday saw him jump back into 11-on-11 and he dove headfirst. Spikes went hard after Dan Connolly on his first snap. After the play, he immediately started jumping around, high-stepping. The energy he brought to the drills -- the whooping, chest-bumping, high-fiving -- was infectious.

Spikes brings big energy to return

Some very bullish observations from NE Patriots' Draft:

2. Bradon Spikes had been out of the field through the first four days, but had been held out of team and individual drills. On Tuesday, he made his return to full speed and contact drills. Spikes’ emotional presence on the field is tough to ignore. He plays with such passion and energy, it’s infectious. Spikes developed into the emotional leader late in the season and into the playoffs and it looks like he picked up where he left off.

3. Ras-I Dowling continued to stand out in man to man coverage. In 1 on 1 drills, he was matched up with the Patriots top outside WR Brandon Lloyd and twice denied him from making a reception. Like I have been saying, Dowling’s size and length are huge assets in man coverage. Once Dowling went down last year the Patriots really struggled to make up for his lost. Big things are expected out of Dowling this year.

4. Chandler Jones and Jermaine Cunningham really stand out in pass rush drills. Jones showcased some impressive power to speed rushing moves against Patriots LT Nate Solder while Cunningham looks like a completely differently player. All that work he put in during the off-season appears to be paying off because he looks quicker, more explosive and more confident. Entering camp no one was sure what to expect out of Cunningham, but to this point he has been one of the standouts.

5. The Patriots defensive line is starting to come into focus and the unit as a whole looks very good. The top 12 DT/DE/OLB look to be Trevor Scott, Kyle Love, Vince Wilfok, Chandler Jones, Gerard Warren, Rob Ninkovich, Jermaine Cunningham, Jonathan Fanene, Brandon Deaderick, Jake Bequette and Ron Brace. It’s a deep and talented group. These players seem to be rotating in with the top groups and rotations. With such depth at the positions, it really makes me wonder if Andre Carter will even be needed this year. I for one think it’s far from a sure thing that Carter is back with the Patriots this year.

6. I am glad more people are starting to warm up to Marcus Cannon. I have been pretty consistent saying I thought he has played well in camp, especially when showcasing his power and ability to anchor at the line of scrimmage. It seems like others in attendance are beginning to take notice as well. Cannon isn’t ready to be a starter, but if Vollmer were to miss time, I’d feel comfortable with Cannon filling in.

7. Jonathan Fanene’s strength in the middle of the defensive line is impressive. He consistently pushes which ever OL he is matched up against into the backfield and is tough to handle one on one. It’s easy to see what Bill Belichick noticed in Fanene that made him one of their top off-season priorities. When I have watch Fanene he is lined up primarily as a 3-Tech (outside shade of the OG), which signals to me, he is going to be their top interior pass rusher.

9. Devin McCourty seems to be making some progress in man coverage drills. While he has been beat a couple times, he has the most pass break-ups out of all the defensive backs thus far in camp. There have been moments when McCourty has been beat, but he has been able to recover and get his hands on the ball. With McCourty the most important thing is going to be how he performs in games. Developing an early confidence will go along way with McCourty.

10. The most impressive thing about Dont’a Hightower is how poised and composed despite having so much thrown at him. At various points in each practice so far he has been the signal caller. He has played in sub package defenses, outside backer, inside, kick-off, kick return. It’s obvious that the coaching staff is really trying to challenge him and he has taken it in stride. He’s just an impressive football player. Look for an early impact from Hightower this year, great fit both character and football wise.

Very encouraging stuff.

Couple thoughts on some of Bedard's observations, I have my own which I plan to write up and post later:

A good article from Greg Bedard on the practice #5, which occured today (Tuesday):

Today he took away Dowling's spot as the first team 3rd CB, and has received a decent amount of 1st team looks the past few days. Dowling himself has been up and down so far, with a good day on Sunday, but not too great of one today.

I don't know what Bedard was watching, but I didn't see this at all. Moore was getting second and third team reps and Dowling was on the first team every time he was out there. I also thought Dowling was by far the best CB on the field, he was really battling well with Lloyd and broke up several passes. There was one point in the endzone where he stuck to him like glue for what felt like a good 6-7 seconds and ultimately Brady had to force it into him and failed.

---Bedard projects that Gronk's ankle is still limiting his somewhat, as he wasn't able to block efficiently at all on one drill. I still think that he should've been kept on the shelf for the first couple/few weeks, but they are medical doctors and experts, so hopefully it isn't an issue.

I definitely agree with this. Gronk wasn't wearing a red jersey but he may as well have. He was targeted only once I believe (and hauled in a great catch in triple coverage at the far endzone on the near field) but Hernandez was clearly the guy today. A lot of times Gronk looked to be going about 70% speed. This could be a conscious way for them to make the offense not too reliant on him and get in some work for the other guys though I really have no idea obviously.

---Vereen hasn't looked too great running the ball, but has looked very good catching it out of the backfield.

He was one of the few real disappointments at practice today, I thought he struggled. He made one nice reception but his low point was on a screen pass where he was wide open and took his eyes off a pretty perfect ball and just dropped it. He got the biggest and most audible chewing out from a coach for this of anyone. Never really stood out all day other than a couple of mistakes.

the offense repped a number of back-shoulder throws – something jabar gaffney and tom brady have unique chemistry on.

Good to hear Cunningham has added a spin move to his repertoire

Good to hear that Cunningham HAS a spin move in his repotoire.

Kidding, kidding.

I actually still have high hopes for him, and I believe that he makes the team.

I don't know, like Deus said, we have to take these reports with a grain of salt, as they are opinionated of course; however I found a report from today's TC 7/31, that agrees with both Moore looking good, and Dowling having issues. I had heard on Sunday that Moore was taking some 1st team nickle reps too, so today was the 2nd day in a row. However, that may be to simply get him ready for that type of specific situation.

This is another report from today in regards to Sterling Moore:

"Moore, who was the hero of the AFC Championship Game by knocking what likely would have been the game-winning touchdown reception out of Lee Evans’ hands, also had a strong practice on Tuesday.

Moore did a very good job of locking onto opposing receivers and using his body to get in good position while not being afraid to make contact to keep receivers away from the ball. During a downfield passing drill late in practice, Moore did a great job of establishing inside position against Jabar Gaffney in coverage, then intercepted the pass thrown by quarterback Ryan Mallett."

As far as Moore goes, common sense would lead one to believe that he would certainly be the 4th CB overall, behind McCourty, Dowling, and Arrington. However, if Dowling was indeed having anything close to an "up and down" day, the possibility exists that Moore took over the 3rd spot (on the outside of course) at times. Maybe that is what Bedard is referring to?

Thursday--"Sterling Moore looks like he's continuing to improve. Moore broke up a deep pass intended for Britt Davis that really impressed me because of the size difference between the two. Davis (6'3'', 215 lbs) would appear to be a match-up problem for Moore (5'10'', 200 lbs), but Moore handled Davis nicely and denied him the ball on that particular play."

We know that he had good tight coverage on the ball that Llyod took off the top of his helmet, and I believe that was on Saturday.

As far as Dowling goes, this is what I found from today's report (Tues.7/31) on him: "Dowling could be the Patriots’ most talented cover corner, but a tackling problem was exposed on Tuesday. He consistently struggled with making tackles, as he seemed reluctant to throw his body into his opponents and was faked out too easily. Dowling does a good job in man-to-man coverage, but a lack of physicality and poor tackling are issues he must overcome."

I have actually seen both players as having some good reports, and some bad, so we'll have to see where it takes us.

Spikes brings big energy to return

I agree, and that's a great example of 2 total polar opposite opinions. It still won't keep us all from looking though ;)

I have heard both good and bad regarding all the CB's. Dowling seems to look like the best physical coverage CB that we have (as we suspected), but it seems as though he is having some issues with his tackling. Moore has had good reports and some not so good reports, depending upon whose opinion it is. I think the same goes for McCourty. Some say that his coverage has improved, while others say that he has gotten burned a bunch of times.

Part of it is likely the talent on the offensive side too, as they are going up against some top level competition

One thing that stands out is that Cannon hasn't looked too hot from all possible reports, and the same for Vereen's running skills. I obviously hope that changes soon, specifically Cannon.

Cannon's been working at different positions polishing up his versatility...he buried the much talked about Trevor Scott yesterday...read the reports from all the Pats beat reporters and then explain to me "from all possible reports"...I just do not see WTF you are talking about.

Uncle ****? Is that you? ;)

In regards to Marcus Cannon having a rough camp so far, give me a sec or two and I'll drum them up for you.

Here's one from Mike Reiss/ESPN Boston. I know it's not the "Sports Spyder" that we all have grown to know and love, but take it for what it's worth:

I'll find a couple of others for you too.

THREE DOWN:

OT Marcus Cannon. With starting right tackle Sebastian Vollmer opening camp on the physically unable to perform list, Cannon has stepped in to fill the void. Particularly in one-on-one pass protection drills, he has looked shaky, leading one to ask whether he might be a better fit playing on the interior. It hasn't been all bad for the 2011 fifth-round draft choice out of Texas Christian, as there have been times when he's generated positive push in the running game, especially when a tight end aligns next to him. But from this view, he doesn't seem to play to his listed measurables -- 6-5 and 340 pounds.

It's been a long few days, and tomorrow will be just as long, so I've got to get some sleep. I thought I'd point out another one here for you, before I call it a night.

Bedard's column today would be another example. Here he's talking about the one-on-ones:

Cannon rebounded nicely from a tough day on Sunday but is struggling in other drills.

did you even open up the page,Supa???...it has ALL the reports from all the various outlets with coverage by all the Pats beat reporters. YOU want this canard to continue...Cannon is NOT having a terrible camp so far "by all accounts!!"...and then you post some dreck by "three downs syndrome"...Reiss et al are all gathered in one place, the Spyder, for easy access to up to date information...crap on it all you want, that is just ignorant.

So that covers Cannon today and Sunday (Mon. off), so I'll give you another from Saturday to make it 3 straight days...

"Marcus Cannon at right tackle looked a tad more shaky…"

2012 Patriots Training Camp Observations | Boston Sports Then and Now

That's also 3 different opinions who are "all Pats beat reporters" or local Boston outlets.

I'll find one more from the first day or two and then I'm done. You can believe what you want to believe, all I said was that "Cannon didn't look too hot from all the possible reports," meaning that every day when I check (the local outlets) there is usually something somewhat negative about his specific progression. I certainly didn't mean it to be controversial. Hopefully he makes some strides in the coming weeks. I don't think it's anything to worry about anyway, it's not like he's in trouble of losing a roster spot.
