OT: Manning arm strength not returning, career in doubt because of it

I know it's popular to hate the guy here in New England, but I've had a different take on the Colts ever since they won the Superbowl. I don't know what it was, but it made me respect them more. And say what you want, but it's a damn shame for a quarterback of his caliber to go out in this way. Yes, he was on a team I rooted against many times, but he's technically one of the best quarterbacks ever.

I really hope he ends up playing somewhere next year (preferably in NFC, I'm not stupid!).

I don't think anyone here hates him or wants him to retire. That would be crazy considering he is much more skilled and worthy of praise than others like Eli and Rodgers.

how it would suck for his final game be a loss to the Jets .

Best of luck Goober. You were a great player.

Thoughts

1) Sad news, if true. He is one of the greats and gave Pats fans a lot of excitement and no little agita.

2) No one on this Board who understands and loves the game will rejoice at this news.

3) He's too classy to get his "sendoff" in Indy and become a distraction during SB week.

4) Just a correction of an earlier post: the Colts don't have to pay him if they release him.

5) I hope it's not true.

No disrespect to Manning.....but this week,2 teams deserve all the attention

The Manning soap opera should wait until the season is over.

It seems the Manning talk is overtaking the Super Bowl and it's participants and it seems like a bit of disrespect from the media.

He doesn't get the money if they release him.

I'm wondering if there will be any type of retirement announcement during Superbowl weekend so he gets a proper send off from the home crowd and national audience.

I think if a player is injured the player needs to pass a physical before he can be released. If the player doesn't pass the team and the player must reach agreement on an injury settlement.

If I am right Manning will get a significant settlement from the Colts if released.

I think it sucks...really. He is a great competitor.

yes he made the comment re: his o-line but there sure must have been some frusteration there.

Ultimately I wish him the very best. He was good for the NFL and filled a lot of pockets in the process...

If true this is indeed sad news. Let's face it, he was our favorite opponent, maybe we breathed a little sigh of relief when the divisions were realigned and we no longer had to face him more than once in the regular season but that one game (if it happened) was the biggest game on the schedule. Not only that, Peyton was a class act, we wanted to beat him not because we disliked him but because he represented the highest level of competition. Too bad he's going out as part of a bad soap opera, he deserves better. Football fans will miss him.

I agree. Everybody from the Colts organisation, please shut up this week.

Sad news if true, always been great matchups against him. He brought so much to the Colts. I think the Colts are handling the situation very poorly.

I have thought, since November, that he will retire so I am not surprised. Chances of him coming back are probably less than 5%. Everything points to that when you add up everything he went through over the last 12 months.

What do sorcerers know about arm strength? Any quotes from doctors?

Is he doing the coin toss?

He needs to go see Dr. Marcus Elliot

Bill Polion was on Sirius radio last night and gave a long answer about the Manning situation.

As NFP pointed out, the contract was rather unusual: the only practical options the Colts have are to release him outright or to pay him the option bonus; if they just let his contract lapse by "doing nothing," then they still owe him the $28M as a "non-exercise fee."

Peyton was one of the greatest of all time. He acted a little whiny and spoiled his first few years in the league which drew the ire of Pats fans, but he grew out of that behavior when he hit his 30's. He was a class act and made great commercials too. He will be missed.

I used to hate Manning, now the hate is more towards his little brother. Peyton earned my respect throughout the years and the Brady Manning rivalry will always stand as one of the bests. Surely one of the greats.
