Safeties Darren Sharper and Renaldo Hill Coming In For Workouts Too

I'm just hoping this board can survive all the crazy trade/release/replace talk for the next 3 weeks.

In almost every case, these sorts of things are nothing more than "due diligence" "Scout by workout" affairs. Just like checking out the new cars on the dealer's lot. Nice to know what's available, how many miles on it, whether the warranty is still good, etc.

This is about planning, preparation and depth, we do not have a lot of safeties healthy and perhaps some might not be back.. so you have a list of who you want, make the call if necessary.

Agreed. I'm really looking forward to seeing the initial roster for opening day. I just know we'll all be surprised sometime between now and then.

The SMY tweet used the word "desperately". That doesn't sound like just being a case of due diligence.

Have been told Belichick is "desperately" looking for a free safety, which is why Sharper/Hill visits make sense

Yeah, I saw that. I don't think it means what she thinks it means. Actually, I think that she's projecting her own desire for a story onto this.

She's a good reporter, though and I like reading her stuff. I just don't see coach ever being desperate.

So, as I suspected, this appears to be a frantic search for depth rather than finding a replacement for Meriweather.

sharper is great, great addition. day 1 starter and great at making the key interception. Merriweather...not sure how much they could get for him. A ham sandwich maybe.

Sharper was an absolute beast in 09 and one of the main reasons the Saints ultimately won the superbowl. If he can give even 75% of what he gave that year he's worth bringing in. At the very least we won't see him whiff on as many tackles as meriweather.

Darren Sharper would be an excellent addition. Who do we even have aside from Chung, Meri and Sanders?

When people make statements like this, it makes me wonder where they have been...

Brett Lockett, Josh Barrett, and Sergio Brown are also safeties.

I honestly believe the Pats are looking for someone for the rotation since Sergio Brown seems to have regressed..Barrett can't get onto the field. And Lockett is as non-descript as they come in regards to actually playing the position...

Find the animosity towards Meriweather amusing, here is a guy who Felger and many fans do not like, but somehow his peers and NFL coaches waste their votes on him for the past two years in the pro bowl.

Since you believe that the Pro Bowl is about putting the best players at their position on the field and that it's not a popularity contest, step into my office so we can discuss this great deal I have on ocean front property in New Mexico..

The talk of trading Meriweather is flat out silly.. he is on his last year of his rookie contract, and some want to trade a player who knows the system well, is held in esteem by peers and coaches for a future pick?? Meriweather is not a legacy pick who is there because of his history. Makes no sense..

More than likely some of the guys who are injured are not coming back soon..

At this point, yes, it is silly to talk of trading Meriweather. If he was going to be traded, it would have been as soon as free agency started.

BTW, My bet is that BB votes for someone other than Meriweather at safety when it comes to Pro-Bowl voting..

I think this is ...a basic evaluate the position ...and see where the s*it sticks to the wall...as BB is concerned about that position. BB knows...when u have pressure....QB will get rid of the ball faster...so he needs safeties who are going to react to that ... so ...more of due diligence...

I wish they would get rid of meriweather...for a decent pick ..hell ..its his last contract year ...lets see him pull a seymour and get a #1 from the raiders
