Daniel Graham named pats captain

Interesting. I have to believe that Scott/BB are seriously thinking of extending him, right? Does it make sense to name someone a captain this late in a season and then let him walk at the end of that season?

I agree. I think this is a promising sign. Given Maroney is the new jewel in the Patriots crown, I want to see the team do all it can to add to the blocking power on the line. Graham is a beast there.

They are obviously starting pseudo contract talks early by signifying that they respect him enough to put him in a leadership role. Personally though, I feel like 8 captains is too many. More than one out of seven players is a captain. Wow.

Are the Captains named by the Coaches or by the Players, thought it was a player thing.. either way he is someone I would like to see extended.

FYI, the team doesn't designate the captains, the players vote on it.

Which leads to the question: Is this the players' way of saying 'Don't do to Graham what you did to Deion, we want this guy on our team.'?

It's an interesting twist, that's for sure.

But who decides when it is appropriate to have the players vote for a new captain? I'm sure this can't be strictly a player only thing because they might decide one day to have 53 captains...

You know what, I'm wrong. According to the Globe today the decision was made by Belichick and the other 7 captains (Brady, Brown, Bruschi, Harrison, Seymour, Vrabal, and Izzo).

FOXBOROUGH -- The Patriots entered the year with seven captains, but tight end Daniel Graham was added to the group late last week. Coach Bill Belichick and the other captains decided that Graham deserved the recognition.

"It's one of those things I felt was the right thing to do for our team," said Belichick. "I think he's a tough guy who is very well-respected on the team."

I didn't think much about the Captain thing when I first heard, but knowing BB approved, it does add to the interest of the negotiations.

Was Milloy a captain when he was cut?

I believe so.

Have we ever lost a captain to FA? Milloy was a captain but he was here and willing to play - only got traded because he just refused to play ball in a cap crunch. So reading between the lines this would really appear to be an indication that they are making an effort in this case to woo a pending FA into becoming a core player. The kind BB meets with regularly. And while it was at BB's direction I don't doubt it was an approach likely broached by one or more of the existing captains. Players equate respect with $$$, but a little noteworthy attention and an invite into the inner circle never hurts either - particularly with the one's who have seemed at times to question whether or not they are in fact valued.

I also think that the timing is deft - Graham's pending FA value today would be impacted by all the time he's again missed. While a great performance down the stretch could see that rebound. This paves the way for getting something done either before the last week of the regular season, so bonus money could be applied to this year's cap, or at least increases the chances that the two sides would continue to talk through to the FA deadline.

I'm sure it's a sincere gesture - the coaches and other team captains were the ones who designated him as such.

Probably all the more meaningful in a season where Graham has (again) battled injuries.

It probably also doesn't hurt as a show of good faith and appreciation as they will certainly attempt to resign him.

Especially since the issue will possibly be how high Graham's salary demands are. Will he demand to be paid as a top tier TE when, even though he is one of the best blockers - he's not played like it or stayed on the field?

Or will he agree to a reasonable contract that gives him securtity long term?

In that light, it doesn't hurt for the team to show him this gratitude right now.

I assume this is in lieu of salary?:D

They are obviously starting pseudo contract talks early by signifying that they respect him enough to put him in a leadership role.

The article explicitly says that they started contract extension talks earlier in the season:

The Patriots and Graham's representatives had initial talks about a contract extension earlier in the season.

I believe this is news. IIRC, earlier in the season there was reportage quoting Graham as saying there had been no talks. That evidently changed.

I'm very pleased by this, as I'm with Bavaro and believe Graham is a tremendous all-round talent. Look at most every big running play the last four years and you'll see Graham involved with a key block. And surprisingly, if you go back and review the 2003/4 seasons, you'll see Graham making his share of highlight receptions. But I will never forget the way he dominated Julius Peppers in the SuperBowl, both on run and pass plays.

The man is a beast, and hits as hard anyone on the team, as he has extraordinary explosion. People who compare his blocking to that of an extra tackle or slow TE don't appreciate that Graham makes plays in space with his speed and agility that no big slow guy can make. That in particular enables him make key second level blocks that are key to the running game. Folks forget that he has excellent speed for a TE, and having a guy who blocks like a tackle but can get to places where a tackle or slow tight end can not is a huge advantage.

He was known as a receiving TE at Colorado, and he could be much more of a receiving threat if he were used more that way. He doesn't quite have Watson's speed, but he's not slow -- and as we're seeing his hands are actually better than Watson's. I think he's a more valuable player than Watson to this team, with the sole caveat being his chronic injury history.

I've felt for a while that BB would pursue Graham more aggressively than say Branch or Givens, because he's repeatedly said that big, fast, strong guys are the most difficult to find. TE has also been one of the positions he's willing to spend 1st round picks on. I hope and think he's going to try and sign him.

One interesting observation from the article...
Although Graham doesn't have the pass-catching stats that most of the top-tier tight ends do, he is considered one of the best blockers in the league. What might be difficult in negotiations is finding a comparable player to help assign a value to Graham.
...prompts a thought: perhaps they should value Graham comparable to the way Mark Bavaro was valued, as the two have often been compared (including by Bavaro himself). I don't know if relative salaries for that era are still available publicly, but surely BB knows. The idea would be to value Graham relative to current TE's similarly to how Bavaro was valued relative to his contemporaries. And I bet Graham would be honored by the comparison.

Other than going out for the coin toss, does the captain designation technically mean anything during the game?

Are they the ones to report eligible receivers to the refs? or submit the decision as to whether they decline a penalty? I believe anyone on the field and the head coach can call a timeout so I don't think that is captains only.

I have to admit that Grahambo has tested my faith a bit this season -- he hasn't been the sure-handed athletic pass-catcher that I know he can be. But there are signs ... And, if anyone can say that the Pats ever send a clear signal, this is one -- and a good one!
