Potential Patriots WTF? Moment at #17

Jake Locker

1: Anthony Costanzo - Does not seem like a brute to me.

2: Jake Locker - We would have to wait too long to trade him away - we need the value now.

3: Rahim Moore - Like :confused3:

4: Randall Cobb - We already tried a Hobb we do not need a Cobb.

Come on now. Plug in any name from this draft you'd like. Torrey Smith, Brandon Harris, Raheem Moore. If the Patriots win two Super Bowls in the next six years with their contributions, is any of them a wasted pick?

I will never again question a pick or positioning (unless its absurd). I will be happy with whomever is drafted and hope for the best. I said WTF at the McCourty pick because I thought is wasn't a great value pick. Ho-lee-****e was I wrong.

Although we probably could use one how about Brandon Harris or another similar cb? That would certainly be a wtf moment.
I guess I would be scratching my head at #17 over Harris as I currently see him more of a slot guy until he gets stronger for battling bigger receivers and improves his off-coverage techniques/recognition. With Arrington coming on the way he did, Wilhite coming back healthy, and Butler starting to regain his poise late in the season, I'm not overly worried about the slot ... and that doesn't even account for 3rd Safety involvement.

KICKER!!!!!!!!!

Oh wait. That's right......

Al Davis doesn't run our team.....

WTF Pick

I'm still a little unsure of who the Patriots will pick at that 17th pick. It's really hard to read because they are so unpredictable. I think that surprise pick (like McCourty,Meriweathe and Mankins) could be Torrey Smith. It may not be at 17 but they could trade down a couple of spot to get him. When I watch him he just looks like a Patriot prototype receiver, in the mold of a Troy Brown or Deion Branch. I know they worked him out as well, so there could be some interest there. They would have to pick him at 17 or at least trade down a couple of spots to get him because he'll be gone to the Ravens before the pats pick at 28.

Yup I agree on Torrey Smith but not in the first round. He is a Patriots type of player at a need position but I'll bet they figure they can get him in round 2-3. He is a trade-down type of guy but in round 2 or 3.

I think that the WTF moment will be at 17 when some draftnic darling such as JJ Watt (or even A.J. Green) is still on the board and the Patriots trade down. Everyone will be screaming like the Sabine Virgins; it will be great--hope I am at a draft party for that.

I know everyone is going to scream at me about Green still being on the board at 17 but I gotta believe that he slides unless there are still some Matt Millen types making picks.

They could've gotten McCourty in the 2nd round but took him in the first, so if they value him enough they will take Smith in the first.

 Sorry for going OT, but 2 more CBs -- including the major reach Patrick Robinson -- were drafted in round 1, and it's been widely reported that the Jets were targeting McCourty ahead of Wilson. No way would the Pats have been able to get him in the 2nd.

What's more, with the ultimate WTF pick Mankins, who everybody confidently said would have been around for a much cheaper pick, a story later came out that the Browns had planned to take him just two slots later at #34. So I tend not to put much stock in "could have gotten him later." It always comes with "but might well have missed out on him altogether."

It depends.

If we could've ~ more to the point: SHOULD've ~ grabbed somebody who's presence would've almost certainly meant FOUR Super Bowls in 6 years...

Without QUESTION.

Aim HIGH, Brothers and Sisters. :D

Per usual, a very intriguing and rarely addressed Point with a very insightful Angle, Sister.

It's a fascinating Aspect of this Great Game, is it not?? The Gap between Market Value and Belichickian Value. How far does Coach Bill press his advantage, considering that every Trade Down both captures a portion of it and yet heightens the risk to the coveted player??

The Ravens though, who pick before the Patriots 28th pick are major threats to take Torrey Smith. He's a local receiver from Maryland, fits the deep threat that they need and they would most definately take him before he slips to the Patriots at 28. All the Ravens may ultimatally need is a deep threat for Flaaco and Smith fits that need perfectly. So if the Patriots really want Smith, they need to either take him at 17 or move down a couple of spots, still in front of the Ravens and pick him. I agree with you on McCourty, I think the Jets being interested in McCourty definately factored into the Patriots picking him, McCourty was projected as a bordeline first round pick and could've been there in the 2nd but the Pariots didn't wanna risk the Jets picking him and scooped him up. The Ravens aren't as strong rivals to the Patriots as the Jets are but the Patriots picking Torrey Smith would not only make the Patriots better and fill a need, it would also take away the Ravens chances of taking Smith and not make them any stronger than they already are. Torrey Smith will not still be there in the second round nor at pick at 28. Even if the Ravens don't end up picking him, Atlanta, who's right behind them, will pick Smith, they need someone else across from Roddy White, it's their biggest need.

That's already factored into the "Belichickian Value."

If Belichick felt the difference in utility between McCourty and the next player n his board was bigger than the value of the picks he could get by trading down, he'd have taken McCourty at 23.

You know, I'm totally opposed to that pick but I still agree with you. A guy who seems like a safe bet to be a solid starter and to upgrade his position can't be called "an AWFUL mistake." I just think it's the wrong strategic approach to the draft.
Yep, I agree.
