...and the draft projections start; DE Watt or Kerrigan at #17

Re: ...and the draft projections start

JJ Watt has a great motor and made a lot of plays last year, but I'm worried that he doesn't have enough sand in the pants to be effective as a DE in the 3-4 and certainly is not agile enough to play OLB.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

The pats runninggame was ranked #9th in the NFL with their first 1,000 yard rusher in 6 years. I don't get what the "experts" are seeing?

Not once this year did I see our running game as threat. Like in 07, our defensive ranking was inflated due to having large leads, and allowing the defense to defend predictabnle situations.

Our running game this year was based on spreading them out and running unexpectedly.

I want a running game where we can go I-Formation and grind out tough yards. We do not have the team to play for tough yards.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

If you check our draft sub-board, you will see that draft projections have been going on for some time now.

per Reiss Twitter....

Thoughts?

Re: ...and the draft projections start

What's with the first round runningback crap?

I also don't understand this.

I'd like to clone Logan Mankins about 6 times but in case we run into legal complications there, we'll have to draft to the Oline instead. With a strong enough Oline, we can have Roseanne Barr to run through the Grand Canyon they create. Mr no-fumbles BJGE will look even better with a stronger Oline.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

How many people would have been flipping out if they saw a Corner slotted as our pick last year?
Not if you saw Wheatley oft-injured, Wilhite regressing, Butler unimpressive, Springs finished.

I wonder why so many people were upset with the McCourty pick then. CB wasn't a top 3 need last season just like RB isn't this season.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

Many of us had us choosing among McCourty, Wilson and Jackson. Of course, we didn't have the info that Belichick had, so we had difficulty choosing among; also it depended on who was there. But rest assued, many of us had us choosing a corner with our first pick. Some even were pretty set that belichick would choose McCourty,

The bottom line is VALUE. Belichick will choose the BPNA, the best player at a position we need that is available.

Personally, AT THIS POINT, I would be shocked with a corner before 35. I wouldn't be shocked by a safety. I expect us to use the first three picks for the offensive line and defensive fron seven, and perhaps a safety.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

Last year everyone thought Butler was the future at CB. Now everyone hates him.
The better description of Butler's play this season would be disappointing. From starter to bench to nickel.

I would be shocked if the Patriots drafted a safety in the first three rounds. Based upon initial looks with the upcoming draft, the safety position looks rather weak.

The value does not supercede the need as opposed to the offensive or defensive lines. Belichick may bring back Faulk and Morris, the Patriots will then have four running backs on the roster for the 2011 NFL Season:

Green-Ellis
Woodhead
Faulk
Morris

Adding another running back is a luxury not a need.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

Value is partially determined by the importance of the position and the skill required to play the position to a high level.

Running Back is a position notoroiusly easy to fill. Hell, we've turned a UDFA into a thousand yard back.

When you have a young, incumbent starter, and at least one decent back up, drafting one in the first round is not value.

IMO.

Again the experts aren't speculating on who we may or may not bring back but rather what positions we are weak at. You also have to look at the way they mocked and who's left on the board.
Kipers reasoning:
The Patriots, year after year, manage to find solutions at running back. But there are solutions, and there are threats. And the fast-rising Leshoure, a chiseled 6-foot, 227-pound back who ran well in a physical Big Ten this past season, could be the alpha running back the Patriots could use. New England could go a lot of ways with this pick, but remember, the Pats have another pick just a handful of spots down the board and if they want a difference-maker at RB in a draft short on them, this is an option.
McShay's:
Running back is not necessarily a need and this is a bit of a luxury pick, but if the Patriots get a pass-rusher at No. 18 it would be hard for them to pass on the best running back in the draft.
The other 1st round options I see left on the board for the Pats are the kid from temple and Cameron Jordan respectively.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

We have double picks in the first three rounds. I don't see how we can rule anything out except TE and QB, if that.

I think we have to get a DE, if the right guy is available. After that, whatever OL, RB WR or pass rusher seems likely, if we don't trade anyone.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

Kerrigan has a huge motor and would be a great 4-3 DE. I still have a hard time going so high on a 3-4 OLB coversion project though. He does have near-capable size for BB's OLB profie: 6'4", 263, if those measurements hold up.

I'd prefer a 3-4 DE with pass rush skills over a 3-4 OLB for situational use, unless he could be a rare 3-down OLB. He also seems less a pass-rush specialist and more aset-the-edge guy who stuffs the run, and if that analysis holds up it doesn't address the pass rush needs.

I am intrigued with the Watt projection. I might be inclined to double-dip in Wisconsin and go for the big OT Carmini at 33 if he's there, maybe even 28.

What about Von Miller?

245 pounds? Too light to set the edge?

He looks a bit like Rosey Colvin with that thin waist.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

Do we take an RB in the 1st rd.
I don't think so.

I think so. BJGE did great, but we need the homerun hitter that Taylor and Maroney were supposed to be.

Re: ...and the draft projections start

First off, I think we are set at running back with BJGE and Woodhead. I would expect another running back drafted in the mid-to-late rounds to groom behind the top two. I think the lines will be addressed, and Watt would be a solid choice at 17 if he was there. With the second first round pick, if OG Mike Pouncey is available, I would love for the Patriots to get him at 28.

The hole at right offensive guard is far greater than at running back. The hole at outside linebacker is far greater than at running back. The hole at right defensive end is far greater than at running back. Besides, these ESPN clowns are never right when predicting New England Patriots drafts.
