Why didn't we sign Cassell? Has ownership abandoned us

Brady coming off a bad knee injury at 32. Everyone is excited to have
him back. Most of your d veterans are gone. So a week before the season you trade arguably your best defensive player for a first rounder 2 years into the future...fine. The next year you sign him to a long term contract so you now have a 5 year window. Everyone knows your D is young and not that good right now. So you say ok..we will have a high powered offense with a defense that can at least turn the.ball over. What do you do? Trade your best reciever 4 weeks in. Now there is a 4 year window with a possible lockout. Bunch of draft picks again equal more rookies the next season. So if the pats just keep trading draft picks to help them in the cuture. Why not keep the younger Cassell to develop with the kids as opposed to Brady who it appears will have to keep hoping the picks develop to stay competitive. Good qb play is not a right in the nfl. and if we keep trading talent for the future and never quite build that.team where we know were going for it. Brady will end bis pats career with good but not special seasons.
2003 we got Colvin, Harrison. Traded for washington. 2004 it was trading for Dillon. 2007 was trading for Moss and welker. Signing AD. Stallworth etc. Last few years we are now trading talent and most of our free agent signings dont make it out of training camp. FYI..krafts will save about 5 mill by trading Moss.

\BTW, you cite the 2003 season. Here's a "trivia" question for you: What compensation did we get for cutting Lawyer Milloy 5 days before the season opener? How'd that disastrous season work out?

Two of the three players you mention are on the team right now. One of those two has been given the richest contract extension in the history of the NFL.

The only one currently NOT playing is an OL. Tell me again how the OL has been struggling in his absence?

Hindsight is 20/20. Going into that season we didn't know if the Pats were loaded to bear. They were coming off a 9-7 season where they missed the playoffs.

That being said if the Pats get only draft picks for Moss, I won't be happy. They have too many draft picks. They need a player (although I realize that player for player trades in the NFL rarely happen).

First of all, you are aware that the New England Patriots will continue as a professional football franchise after TB's retirement, aren't you?? Yes, it is BB's job to look that far into the future.

Second of all, Let's say it takes the 2011 kids two years to get up to speed, which I think is conservative at least in the case of the top 3 picks, who will likely be impact players taken within the first 40 picks. In that case, Brady would be able to benefit from playing with them under his current contract for the 2012 playoffs and the entire 2013 and 2014 seasons. For those three playoff runs, the 2009 and 2010 classes would be veterans in the prime of their careers. That sounds like 3 viable SB runs that BB has laid the groundwork for. After 2014, if Brady is still playing at a high level, they can always resign him. If he's not, you can bet they'll have a player smart enough to learn and stay within the system ready to step in, whether it's Hoyer or someone else. The ability to take the longview distinguishes the coaches that stay around for a while and those that don't last in the NFL.
