Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver for 2011 4th - Broncos get 2011 6 [merged]

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver [merged]

It's a concern what they do if Morris and/or Taylor go down, but there are always some quality free agent RBs available. If worst comes to worst, they have guys like Willie Parker, Ladell betts, Justin Fargas, who can more or less provide what Maroney gave them. Maroney had no future on the team and didn't give them anything special, so this trade makes sense in the sense that they got value for a player who would never have any value on the team again.

Sorry, but I chose not to read all 24 pages of this thread, especially since it's all pretty predictable how it went, just like all the Moroney threads of the past 3 years. :D

We the "great national debate" over Lawrence Moroney is finally over.....thank God. I was a supporter, who still wonders how a guy who fumbles 4 times in 5 seasons can be labeled a "fumbler" And how people so easily dismissed a guy who seemed to have a nose for the endzone could be called a dancer, every time he showed patience on a run.

I think the truth, like it often is, is somewhere in the middle. Not as bad as some people say. Not as good as we hoped, but definitely not a bust. We got some decent value from him, and now get a 4th round pick in return

I am now concerned about our RB depth, given the age of our top 3 RBs. Still running backs are among the most available commodities in the NFL, and if things go badly there, we should be able to pick up a serviceable guy. God knows they are around.

As to the Pick, I'm pleased with it and don't mind giving away a 6th. There is such a thing as TOO many picks and I don't know how many we have for 2011, but I'm sure its in the double digits again. I'm think that 4th round pick (or our own) will be used as ammo to move up in next years draft to get an impact guy. Like other I think it will be better used on the DL than at RB or WR. The great ones are very rare and go early.

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver for 2011 4th - Broncos get 2011 6 [mer

The Maroney bashing is a bit unfair... he's not a top tier RB but a career 4.2 YPC is something many teams would be happy to have

This is a win for all involved. The Patriots have a decent draft pick in return - enough to allow them to turn a 3rd rounder into yet another 2nd rounder for next year (Giving them FIVE picks in the 1st TWO ROUNDS!)

Denver has a very decent backup/change of pace RB

... and Maroney has a chance to showcase himself on a roster where he's not 4th on the depth chart

I appreciate LoMo's time here, his contributions, and overall his good attitude

I am not surprised by this. Like I said earlier, how worse do you get than getting benched in a playoff game?

This speaks to a roster upgrade, I believe at OLB, and we get a RB onto the practice squad.

But thankfully the Maroney flaming threads are over, and so are the Maroney vs. BJGE threads.

I wish I could write a script that would automatically relegate any poster who uses the term "SloMo" to my ignore list.

I prefer NoMo LoMo good to see GoMo

Sounds better :)

We got a great deal in this trade for a 4th,when all I was expecting was a Western Omelet :ugh:

The BOTTOM LINE for mw is that Belichick now longer had faith in Maroney and got the best he could for him.

I don't particularly like Green-Ellis. I don't see him doing much. But them, he is our inexpensive #4 running back.

To be fair he started the playoff game and got "benched" because we went in a huge hole early. Faulk was more useful than any of the RBs at that point in time.

Now I wonder if the Patriots see that much in BJGE, have that much faith in Taylor's health or they have another trade for a RB in the works?

Perhaps they are just comfortable enough with Taylor/Morris/BJGE on this current team that they felt the draft pick was worth it.

Jackson was taken in a bad year (take a look at the players between him and Crabtree), and he's been unfairly maligned by Chiefs fans. He also looked pretty darned good last night.

Having said that, I agree with the notion that you want more than Tyson Jackson when you're picking at #3.

Oh, agreed. The only fair way to look at the Jackson pick is relative to who else the Chiefs could have taken at #3 (assuming that they tried and failed to trade down). In that context, he was the right pick: he's a good player with a rare skill-set that is perfectly suited for that defense. I just hope and assume that the Pats get someone better than him if that's where they're picking.

Yeah. No big loss and we got an extra 4th out of it. Too bad we didn't get Hardesty this year but I'll take Spikes. He looks like he will help out this D. Anyone noticed how great Chung and McCourty played in week 1? Nice upgrades all around on defense. Just need a bit more at the DE/OLB positions next year and we're gonna see a stellar D. This D should still be pretty good once it gels. It's a lot faster than what the Pats used to field.

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver for 2011 4th - Broncos get 2011 6 [mer

Wow, I'm shocked...I thought nobody would take him.

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver for 2011 4th - Broncos get 2011 6 [mer

Surprisingly low compensation.
I guess this means the Pats didn't promise a 2011 6th for any of the White/Page trades.

He was in the last year of his contract. Denver was trading for less than one season of him, so the compensation was naturally below his real value. If he was signed for two full years, he would've been worth a third, probably.

No that was his real value, lose.

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver [merged]

Ah, so this is how the sLoMo fanboys are going to spin this? Well, we should get on that Welker trade soon then eh? He has likely the most trade value of all the WRs.

One of the things that I'll most miss about Maroney is how the weekly "Maroney sucks!" threads were perfect for letting me know exactly who belonged on my ignore list. It got to the point where last time one of those threads came up, almost half of the posts on it were from that I was ignoring.

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver for 2011 4th - Broncos get 2011 6 [mer

Wow, for a fourth, but with a sixth as a sweetener! That's quite a drop in value from Round One. I didn't think he would be that lowly valued if traded. Maybe there's something about his fundamental health that we just don't know because it isn't public.
It doesn't make sense to look at as "he was taken in the 1st round therefore we should get a first rounder". Even if he was a good value as a first rounder, which I think we all agree he wasn't, the pick has depreciated. Basically, a pick is the exclusive right to a player for 4 or 5 years. We used up all but one of those years so now that right is worth only 1/4 or 1/5 of what it was originally.

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver for 2011 4th - Broncos get 2011 6 [mer

BB just suckered another team. First he dupes the Eagles into giving up two 5ths for Hobbs, now he steals a 4th from Denver. BB is one of the best pick traders in the NFL. No he doesn't hit on all his picks. But he's willing to move on and recoup what he can on his blunders. Sometimes you succeed because of sheer quantity. The Pats have had more picks to play with than any other NFL team over recent years because of this. Can't wait to see what 2011 brings. We've had some rather nice 4th round picks in the BB era - Asante Samuel and Aaron Hernandez come to mind.

No kidding. According to these people, if I buy a car for $50K, drive it for 5 years, then sell it for $30K, that means I got hosed in the deal
