That's what makes this whole process so infuriating. Every free agent that signs brings about another wave of wailing and gnashing of teeth, followed by pronouncements of how the Patriots have failed in FA due to failing to sign said player.
Over paid or not, it looks like our defense will again suck, with no pass rush.

Peppers was the only possible answer to our pass rush? A 4-3 DE? Geez, the whole league is screwed then...

mmmmmkay...........so who?
its not like every other team is as sorely lacking regarding an outside pass rush as the pats.....
not only is adalius the best player the pats have in that spot, but he's THE ONLY PLAYER
it didn't look this bad after the 2002 season.....at least they had LB's
This is where the optimists, pesimits and realists will all clash I see.
Are you telling me this defense right now has what it takes to get it done? Are you telling me it's OK because a draft is coming up, (which we don't even know who Bill actually wants to pick. Imagine if we don't pick up a DE or OLB, than what?) Will the same people come here posting perspective threads, trying to bring up the past 10 years to make us feel better? Telling us we're fine and BB knows best?
Peppers is the only piece you add that you KNOW will make the pass rush instantly better in 2010. The fact that the Pats wanted Peppers alone tells you they felt they needed him, they just didn't value him as much as other teams. The NFL salary cap is growing every year to where 2 years from now, Peppers will be getting what any other good DE/OLB is getting. Remember the salary has nearly jumped up a hundred mill. from our last super bowl win.
I just think when you need a guy, you make the move. I'm not saying we get Peppers for 16 mi. a year. But an offer like this the Pats could have tried to top by a mill or so. But hey, we don't need him cuz our pass rush is awesome.

Wait... if you're not saying that the team should be ponying up $16 million, what number did you think was reasonable for a DE trying to convert to LB at 30 years of age, and could you please provide a link to the post where you gave us that number?
