If there is no cap, would it be better to trade Thomas...

Straight up swap of Thomas for Urlacher. Two supposedly washed-up linebackers for each other. Patriots could play a 4-3 with Guyton(S)-Urlacher-Mayo(W) or a 3-4.

Trading Thomas for a conditional 7th rounder would be better than cutting him, but that would require a team to be willing to take on his salary.

No, it would require a team to be willing to take on his salary if all works out between the team and the player between now and Game One. Othwise he would be cut and no one would owe anything,

Re: If there is no cap , would it be better to trade Thomas..

There's a provision in an uncapped year that says any dead money gets spread out over succeeding years so that teams don't do salary cap dumps in an uncapped year.

still makes it a good year to do it

Urlacher always has been and continues to be one of the most overrated LBs in the game. No thanks.
