Clayton: Pats "frantically" calling around for third receiver

People don't think that the Patriots are desperate for an outside receiver to pair with Moss?

Seriously?

After 6 weeks, people here honestly don't see that enormous hole in the offense?

DVOA says, before the Titans, the Patriots had the 5th best offense in the league. Theres no enormous hole. Small hole, maybe, but they don't have an enormous hole.

Aside from Clayton being wrong far more often than being correct involving anything to do with the Patriots, the idea that the Patriots are "frantically calling around for a third receiver" makes no sense at all. A team might be "frantically calling" if they lost a couple of players at one position due to injuries. An example of this would be when Jacksonville lost four starters on their offensive line before the first game of the season was finished a year or two ago.

It makes no sense whatsoever from a negotiations standpoint to cut a player and then desperately call around for a replacement. If the Pats were intent on trading for a receiver to replace Galloway then they would have called around not only prior to cutting him, but prior to when they started making him inactive for games.

Another consideration is the amount of time it takes to learn the playbook and get in synch. Remember just last year when all the experts such as Clayton were speculating that the Pats would trade for a quarterback, but instead started Matt Cassel? If Galloway (and Lewis) couldn't accomplish this over several months of OTA's and an entire preseason, why would anyone presume a player from another team could walk in and be ready to play in less than three weeks?

In my opinion this comment is pure speculation by Clayton; simply a knee-jerk reaction by him in response to Galloway being cut.

Re: Clayton: Pats "frantically calling" around for third receiver

Are you saying Gaffney is a deep threat, deeper threat than Edelman or a as deep of a threat as Galloway?

I always thought of Gaffney is a 3rd/4th WR who is a good short/intermediate route runner- nothing more.

True - he is more of an intermediate threat - but certainly a deeper threat than Endleman is at this point in his career.

I'll be happy when 4PM comes around and all this media BS will be over.

If this is the case then releasing Galloway before getting a replacement for him would then be a tactical mistake, making it harder to actually get his replacement. Teams would start over-charging based their perception of our need. Not only that, if Galloway signs then you lose out on the chance that he actually figures it out and eventually provides that threat.

Agree 100%.

Leaving Galloway inactive in favor of a special teams player had already killed the "we like Joey" defense.

Clayton also said the Chiefs don't have any players to offer another team. Why would anyone want Bowe, Dorsey, Johnson or Waters?

Yep. There is no frantic desperation in Foxboro.

Salsbury in his book says Clayton bangs more grade A trim than anyone would believe.

Maybe so, but he's not a deep threat, so he's not going to help us at WR.

Re: Clayton: Pats "frantically calling" around for third receiver

Agree 100%.

Why do you feel that Gaffney is more of a deep threat than Edelman? Edelman is actually FASTER than Gaffney, and most likely by quite a bit.

Edelman ran a faster 40 (4.51 vs 4.55), and Gaffney was a WR, so his primary training was going into running the 40. Edelman went to the combine as a QB, and spent his time working on the throwing drills. He's just white, and that makes a lot of people think "slow, gritty, etc"

True. Which is why if the Pats were calling around to trade for a receiver, they would have done that a month ago - and not just suddenly started doing that today.

Yeah, just as the Patriots were frantically trying to get into the top 10 of the draft, and (as Gregg Worsterbrook keeps saying on BSPN.com) "frantically" trying to run up the score against the Titans yesterday. . . .

A month ago, Galloway was still a part of the offense.

Has nothing to do with race. No need to go down that road.

Edelman has been specfically running underneath slants and quick-out routes. Stretching the field requires creating seperation which does require good stratight-line speed, but also technique such as selling routes, studder-stepping, body position, etc.

Look at Bethel and Chad Jackson...two burners where you couln't slide a piece of paper b/t/w them and the DB...

Gaffney's spiral socks give him an extra 10 MPH boost.

Is Matt Jones..a former number one pick that horrible that no one wanted to sign him as a FA?

...or maybe people feel this way because he hasn't been used as a deeper threat so far this year....(eye roll)
