2009 Pro-Day news and notes

He was very fluid in drills, but he timed slower in the 40 and his 3-cone was indeed stiff. I still think this kid came out a year too early. The main knock on him was his ability against the run. I just don't see him as a good fit for NE.

I really think at his age and growth development is what has hampered him against the run. Now this recent growth has me wondering if injuries may fallow as I have seen this in football many times during my career. His quick first step is just something that is not coached but his ability to play the run is coached and taught well by old Pepper Johnson and BB(I know he is not a End for us but Pepper will like this kid). From what I have seen he can get to the QB and I doubt he will be around at 23 but I would have to see more film to have a better opinion. Amobi Okoye is a good example of a young guy who might have stayed in college that extra year but decided to come out which makes them kinda a wildcard.

Here is some info I found while researching him.

Draft Minute: Aaron Maybin

Ok I will say it my favriot NFL player of all time went into the Hall of fame last year and this kid reminds me of this guy in a hi-light. That man is Fred Dean.

Actually, at the combine, he did run slow, but everyone said he was very flexible, showed great agility, etc. In other words, he had a slow 40 but aced everything else.

His explosion was there with the 38 inch vert and the 10.4 Broad Jump but when he was doing the drills I thought he looked stiff at times. While he was the hardest worker by far on every drill which I loved his ball skills left some scouts rolling there eyes. He looked like the tall kid who was still growing into his body but it was due to his mussle increase. I think at his pro day since the combine he has changed his training which was evident on his pro day. He is young so his upside is huge and maybe combine with the signing of Jason Taylor for a year or two to help this kid might be a great long term move as we have a load of picks this year.

Pro Days reveal interesting tidbits about Oregon and Oregon State players, according to one NFL scout

I spoke candidly with a NFL scout, who gave me a run down of what he thought about several players after pro days were held at Oregon and Oregon State last week.

I see different dates wherever I look in regards to the Northern Illinois Pro Day... is it March 16 or 27 and if it was 16th, how did Larry English do?

Wes Bunting from National Football Post has some interesting comments on Oregon's pro day:

The National Football Post | NFP Pro Day Report 4

On Patrick Chung: "SS Patrick Chung (5-11, 209) was the real standout at Oregon’s pro day and looked impressive during position drills. He displayed good footwork and balance and could end up being the first safety off the board in April."

On Nick Reed: "The surprise of the day was the workout by DE/LB Nick Reed (6-2, 245), who ran a 4.71 40 and had a 31½-inch vertical jump. Reed was tremendously productive (13 sacks) last season but is being viewed at an array of positions in the NFL, including defensive end, outside linebacker, inside linebacker and even fullback." A lot of people bring up Tedy Bruschi's name when discussing Reed, as a productive but undersized DE. Reed showed better-than-expected athleticism. Could he potentially be a late round/UDFA long-term conversion prospect for ILB?

AQ Shipley went out with one of my friends for a couple years at Penn St. He is a big strong dude with a terrible build and fondness for alcohol.

No thanks unless it is really late.

Football Plays Host To NFL Pro Timing Day - CINCINNATI OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
CINCINNATI - Fifteen seniors from the University of Cincinnati football team worked out at Nippert Stadium Thursday, as the Bearcats played host to their annual NFL Pro Timing Day.
It behooves you draftniks to go there and check out the blog link, the results link, and there's a video link I haven't scouted yet. There will be follow-up stories on several participants coming later from the author.

Bad news for the my fellow Barwinites, Sexy Rexy of the gangrenous jests was there...and I'm not thinking it was for their WR shortage.

Tony Pauline's latest list of pro day risers and sliders is out:

Draft Risers and Sliders: Pro Days - NFL - SI.com

Of particular interest to the Pats:

"Connor Barwin/DL-OLB/Cincinnati: Barwin proved himself to be first round worthy at last month's combine and on Thursday erased any remaining doubt he deserves to be a top 32 selection. Barwin improved his 40 time from Indianapolis, posting 4.48 seconds. He then put on a show for scouts in the position drills. The former tight end worked out with the offensive linemen to show his blocking prowess and with the receivers to display his pass catching skills. Barwin also did defensive line and linebacker drills. He's getting a lot of interest from teams who select in the late part of round one such as the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins."

Another interesting note: "Missouri safety William Moore is back to full health after suffering with ankle and foot injuries the past six months. At his second pro-day workout scouts claimed he, "looked like the old William Moore," displaying terrific skills during position workouts. Moore was graded as a first-round pick coming into the season but slipped because of a disappointing senior campaign. Several scouts feel Moore may now reclaim the No. 1 spot atop the safety chart."

Well, the Jests aren't taking him at 17 so unless they're going up from 52 they're not a concern. Perhaps they were there for the other defensive players as it seems Sexy Rexy has no interest in the offensive side of the ball.

Who might the Jesters be taking at 17?

I was just going to post this interesting tidbit.

Even if the Pats aren't interested in Moore, and he moves back into round one consideration for some, this will slide another player toward #34, making it easier for NE to get their targeted player.

Agreed. The question to me is whether we should revise seriously looking at Moore. I had pushed him down on my list from a potential 1st round pick at 23 in January to more like a 3rd option at safety around 58. However, the 2007 vintage William Moore was a terrific player, and the perfect kind of safety to complement Meriweather. While I still think I prefer Louis Delmas, this is enough to make me want to take a serious 2nd (3rd, 4th, etc.) look.

Did they get a new GM? (Though I truly hope you're correct.)

Perhaps they'll sign Tory Holt as their #1 WR or perhaps they'll feel they have enough RB depth or perhaps they'll feel they have the (right) QB in Brett Ratliff so that taking CB-binky can be rationalized.

It would be all too good if they really are in love with Josh Freeman, though.
