Gil Brandt Calls BB Best Drafter IN NFL

I think BB is the best team builder (draft, FA, trades, undrafted, etc.). I am not sure even he would say he was the best drafter but would defer to the art of team building and managing the cap.

Anyone who uses a 2 on Richards? Don’t get me wrong B.B. is great but drafting is not his strong suit
100% accuracy is beyond ridiculous. There is no one who « always hits ».

He was also critiqued for using picks on Gost & Slater. People also criticized his pick of DMac. They hated Thuney early on.

His overall body of work is fine. Bolstered greatly because he caught lightning in the bottle by drafting the GOAT in the 6th round. It’s his recent drafts from 2014 to current that have put the franchise in the position it’s in right now and the drafts from 2005-2008 were pretty bad.

Why would you include undrafted guys in a draft class? Their designation is "Undrafted".

Bill's drafting has been pretty good over the last 20 years but not so great over the last 3. For instance, why didn't he draft a TE last draft with a deep TE class and a desperate need at that position? Also, Bill likes to draft a lot of "projects" and not a lot of near sure things (or as near as you can get in the draft...I know it's still a crap shoot for pretty much every team).

There's no denying BB's GOATness and overall drafting record. The Last few years haven't been his best though.

Last year is still wide open. It could even be viewed a great draft in a few years.

2018 looked spotty, but they picked up JC Jackson as a UFA. 2017 shouldn't even count. They were loading up for the season and only had four picks.

On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.

- Ron Borges, MSNBC after 2001 Draft.

I for one had hoped that we draft Todd Light. Oh well.

That’s true. I’ve often not liked the draft picks but really, it’s his opinion that matters.

Lol @ disagreeing with this statement.

The reason Brady is gone is because the last 4-5 drafts have been rock bottom.

The reason the Patriots are in danger of regressing back to the pack, at last, is because the last 4-5 drafts.

This isn’t even a debate.

The two decades have been eerily similar.

Early 2000s/Early 2010s: Red hot drafting, picking up multiple all-pros and potential hall of fame players.

Mid 2000s/Mid 2010s: Drafting more on the average level; Patriots mix in a lot of savvy free agent signings to fill out areas of weakness.

Late 2000s /Late 2010s: Incredibly dry drafts over multiple years leads to an aging team that must be rebuilt.

I think you COULD debate Brady’s leaving is about recent drafts. It could also be about Brady wanting to leave BB and it could be about BB wanting to move on from Brady.

Another note : it’s AWESOME that you are talking about « the danger of regressing » ! It’s just another reminder of how WILDLY successful NE has been. It’s like « we are in danger of regressing after dominating a league for twenty years ! ». Haha. You need to love that part.

Everyone complains about the Pats draft and points to this or that player as proof. But if you have nothing to compare it to it is all subjective. If you want to prove your point then compare each teams draft to the same examination you are doing with the Pats. Then you can argue about it.

The old school NFL guys except that douche in Miami love BB. They realize signing UDFA’s who become starters is like hitting on an early pick. Butler, Jackson, Jones, Stork, etc. And, picking at the bottom of reach round year after year is difficult.

Stop making sense. He drafted Jordan Richards! He must be terrible! Always!

Because the Draft is just 7 rounds and hundreds of players scouted go undrafted, and figuring which ones could good NFL prospects is part of the overall process.

I do. And I’m not disputing that Bill is overall and outstanding drafter. The last five years, though, was what was being zeroed in on.

I don't think Bill is better than his top peers at talent selection. What makes him great is he has a value system that he sticks to, he gives himself many more at bats than his peers and he tries to build a team not a collection of talent.

Ernie and Bill treat it like a doctorate class in economics which in many ways it is. They just use draft capital and value against salary to gain a competitive advantage. When a vet starts making more salary than what they think his value is they let him walk and take the comp pick to get more value. They may take a short term hit in talent at a position but they're usually in a better value situation. Sure you would love to still have Trey Flowers, just not at 17/year. Simon, Winovich, Wise.....not nearly the player Flowers is but combined they make less than a third of what he makes for 80% of the output.

We compared the Steelers 2nd round picks vs the Patriots a few years ago during one of the "Patriots can't draft in the 2nd round" rants. I forget the exact numbers but the Patriots and Steelers had roughly the same percentage of hits in the second round but the Patriots had twice the number of selections in the same time period. Bill knows that as good as they are they're going to miss. He's giving himself more hits by playing the numbers.

It's not like any of this is a revelation. We've had this discussion a lot over the years.

Nuff' said....

Bill Belichick is the greatest coach AND the greatest team builder in NFL history.

People want to ***** about a handful of drafts over the last 20 years go for it.

Is there a comparative analysis of the Patriots drafting compared to other teams? Including expected return based on draft position?

2015 draft was strong - Flowers and Mason both warranted big 2nd contracts. Brown, while not a hit as a 1st rounder is a solid player. Cardona has played 80 games as a 5th rounder and fills his role. Roberts, while never making it with the Patriots has started numerous games as a 7th rounder. They also added David Andrews as an UFA. If 2015 is considered a bad draft then the Pats have bad drafts 70% of the times.

2016 was probably slightly below average but it did net a player in Thuney who has basically played every single snap and warranted being franchised. Brissett has proven to be a solid backup QB, Roberst and Karras are marginal starters/role players. Jonathan Jones added as UFA.

2017 hurt and left some holes on current team.
2018 has 2 starters in Wynn and Michel plus JC Jackson as UFA - Bentley will have a chance to shine this year
2019 are way too early to tell

Overall they have not hit on any superstars but am not sure it is as bad as being portrayed
