Jameis Winston

It won't matter who the quarterback is if the offensive skill talent stays the same.
Gotta wonder if maybe the offensive systems changes to allow for better use of the receivers we have/can get.

Didn't think of Rivers as the pick machine he is. Always thought of Eli as such.
Most of the pick machine QBs, but not all. were from earlier era where CB contact was VERY different.

Not that I really want Winston in NE (I'd rather stick with Stidham), but the criticism surrounding Winston for the 30 INTs is getting blown way out of proportion; especially when he still threw for 33 TDs and 5000+ yards.

With that being said, I looked up the list of QBs on PF...

Current search:

For single seasons, from 1970 to 2019, played QB, requiring Passes Intercepted >= 20 and Passing TD >= 25 and Passing Yds >= 4000, sorted by descending Passes Intercepted

Player Season Finder Query Results | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Rk Player Year Yds TD Int
1 Jameis Winston 2019 5109 33 30
2 Lynn ****ey 1983 4458 32 29
3 Drew Bledsoe 1994 4555 25 27
4 Eli Manning 2010 4002 31 25
5 Dan Fouts* 1980 4715 30 24
6 Dan Marino* 1986 4746 44 23
7 Brett Favre* 1998 4212 31 23
8 Dan Marino* 1988 4434 28 23
9 Peyton Manning 2001 4131 26 23
10 Kurt Warner* 2001 4830 36 22
11 Drew Brees 2010 4620 33 22
12 Philip Rivers 2016 4386 33 21
13 Dan Marino* 1985 4137 30 21
14 Andy Dalton 2013 4293 33 20
15 Don Majkowski 1989 4318 27 20
16 Jake Plummer 2004 4089 27 20
17 Philip Rivers 2011 4624 27 20
18 Carson Palmer 2007 4131 26 20

So, yeah. I'd say it's still reasonable to suggest that Winston -- with a good coaching staff & in a more conservative offense -- could still develop into a solid QB. So, if you can get him at a low price, it wouldn't be bad for NE to sign him.
If you watch some of Winston’s touchdown passes you will see there are plenty of them just as easily could have been intercepted. He lobs the ball into the air and hopes his guy comes down with it. You can’t just say “if he cuts his interceptions in half then his numbers are great”. You stop him from making the throws that end up picked then you also stop him from throwing that many touchdowns.

You are describing the Arians system. Arians believes in lots of 50% downfield throws.
"no risk it, no biscuit". Of course, a different system would reduce his number of interceptions, and likely his number of points and yards also.

Unless Winston -- or any other vet QB -- accepts an absurdly cheap contract for a one year deal I don't think there will be any major activity. I am sure BB will draft 1-2 QBs and maybe even bring in a cheap veteran again for camp.

Andy Dalton is a serviceable 10 win QB.

Just get in the playoffs and see what happens. Pats odds to win the SB dropped 40 - 1, so nobody expects much.

That was the approach before Brady. It is a matter of priorities. First, focus on getting in the playoffs )one game at a time). Then, anything can happen.

from The Gospel According to Bill (Parcells that is)

Nobody expects the Pats to win anything now.

We may have to give up a draft pick for him in a trade, plus the small issue of a $17 million cap hit this year. Pass on the ginger. If they like the kid enough to think that he could be the starter next year, go with the kid.

What a waste of cap space. No matter even if "cheap", which he isn't unless cut.
Waste of potential draft pick trading for him.
Best case assuming Red Rifle gets us to the post season, which I doubt, I can't see him winning even ONE game never mind four. Brady >> Dalton and we lost game one.
All resources on deck to rebuild a SB contender instead.

??????

Salary is not guaranteed. The 17 million cap hit on the Bengals only applies if Dalton is on their roster. It behooves the Bengals to get Dalton off the team asap, so their backs are against the wall. Players routinely rework their contracts when they transition to a new team.

Dalton took the Bengals to the post season his first 5 seasons in the NFL. All while playing for a train wreck franchise.

In regards to foolishly spending a draft pick. Yeah, the Pats never miss on a draft pick so we better save them for picking out a stud player.

Missing on picks is an argument for more picks not less. Blind squirrel.

I think they are in love with Stidham...I wouldn't be surprised if they don't draft a QB at all

You know there are 7 rounds, we have a lot of picks and there are enough reps in camp to go around for a third qb.

No reason not to take 1-2 day 3 (or udfa) flyers.

Maybe, but I don't know it's as pressing an issue as a lot of people think

Andy Dalton is 0-4 in the playoffs.

55.7% completion, 1 TD, 6 ints, 57.8 rating. Never scored more than 13 points in a playoff game(Note that game feature 7 Cin points from a pick-6).

So basically picture the wildcard game 2 months, but worse. That is what happens with Andy Dalton in the playoffs :D

Why would you want Dalton over Stidham?

Winston would be an exciting choice. We could place bets when he would
be intercepted or fumble.

So, the team that Dalton was on had no bearing on the outcome of the game?

Stidham hasnt won anything. He is going to struggle.
