Stephon Gilmore is DPOY

It must be said again and again how difficult it is for a CB to win DPOY, especially in this pass-friendly era of football. Gilmore went H2H against WR1s all season long and shut down all except DeVante Parker of all players.

Prior to Gilmore, only four DBs have won DPOY in the 21st century. One is in the HOF (Ed Reed), two will be in the HOF (Troy Polamalu, Charles Woodson), and last being Bob Sanders (potential HOFer if it weren't for the injuries). Three were safeties and one was a hybrid safety/CB.

Gilmore is also the first DPOY in Patriots history.

If Gilmore doesn't land in the HOF, he will be in the Patriots HOF.

It’s not that surprising. Brian Flores would know how to handle that defense as well as anyone, provided he had a competent offense (which he did in the second game.) Patriots coaching staff should be tarred and feathered for their zero blitz game plan that Ryan Fitzpatrick feasted on. I joked all week that Steven Jackson was signing with the Patriots, alluding to their 2015 meltdown to lose HFA, and then they lose to an even worse team, at home as 17 point favorites, to lose the bye. This coaching staff really does choke against the Miami Dolphins.

Yay. Wasted his great year bc they fielded a bottom 10 offense in terms of talent (maybe bottom 3 if not for Brady).

This is the only time in 20 years I could imagine doing this, but I do feel this way about the 2019 season. They couldn’t beat Miami when Gilmore looked human, and I don’t think they win the division if Gilmore gets injured or plays like a good but not all-time cornerback this season. His impact on the game was absolutely immense, the most valuable non-QB season in recent memory. Trying to avoid hyperbole, but it’s difficult.

Gilmore was a force all year. Congrats to him,

for a defense to be great, you need all 11 on the same page, executing and communicating,

this award is recognition of the great job they did this past season.
