Let’s build a great running team

I rewatched the Chiefs-Patriots AFCCG yesterday and focused on why and how Sony ran so well. Play after play, great blocks by Devlin, Gronk, Duane Allen, Andrews, Brown... amazing how much run-blocking talent is gone in such a short time.

Reactionary babble

Add a decent FB and a TE proficient at blocking and we already have what we need.
If Devlin returns healthy then we just need the TE ...
Sadly, Develin's not returning...ever.

The Ravens are just a bunch of boobs.

1. Like boobs the first time you see them they can be mesmorizing. Sometimes that leads to giving up touchdowns and other times you'll find yourself buying wedding rings or making unwanted child support payments. It depends on the situation I guess.

2. Big boobs cause debate. " Are they real or are they fake?" Fake boobs will get the job done but eventually spring a leak. We'll see at the end of the season whether or not the Ravens were " real and spectacular" or just a cheap unbalanced boob job.

3. There are usually two but in this case there are three. Jackson and Ingram are doing their best "chick on the trampoline" impersonation at the moment while Harbaby or Harbooby is being his typical whiny self. We know the third boob is real. No one gets a fake third boob intentionally.

Anyway the Pats have already experienced these particular boobs in action. They've seen how they bounce around, have had their hands on them and know how they feel. They were boob slapped the first time around but I suspect the next time they'll motorboat their ass.

NFL run to pass ratio-

NFL Run/Pass Ratios - 2019

Most of the playoff contending teams seem to be in the upper tier of this list. And most of the obvious Super Bowl contenders are more balanced.
High run/pass ratios are not causation to winning, winning is causational to high run/pass ratios.
Teams that are winning run, teams that are losing pass.
You are mixing up cause and effect.

I guess you missed the 2015 and 2017 Super Bowls?

Are you saying that run dominated teams can't win in today's game? Have you seen the Ravens? They have a chance to break the record for most yards in a season set by the 78 Pats. And Jackson is just a second year QB, Ingram has a while left too. They're just getting started, and they're going to be one of our biggest road blocks for years to come.

People are too worried about "how to stop them", which I'm not sure is possible, to ask "how to beat them" which is entirely possible. They owned time of possession 37:01 to 22:59 against us. They had two 14 play touchdown drives in the 2nd half of 8:09 in the 3rd Qtr and 9:35 in the 4th. Altogether they controlled the ball for about 19 out of 30 minutes in the 2nd half.

You don't beat a team like that with no huddle quick strike passing. You beat them by keeping that offense off of the field with long sustained scoring drives and lots of runs to wear their defense out, keep them on the field, and demoralize them.

The 49ers showed how to beat them. They kept time of possession close at 32:26 to 27:34 for the game, and won time in the second half 16 to 14, keeping Jackson on the sideline most of the 3rd Qtr. They succeeded by matching them in rushing yards 174 to 178. They only lost because they missed on 4th down and the Ravens were able to milk the last 6 minutes on one of those long drives for a game winning FG. The 49ers likely win if they had converted that 4th down.

But that's what its going to take to beat them this year and in the years ahead. And I don't know if we're made for that kind of game. We're going to have to adjust to what they are doing in years ahead if we want to get through them, and I think that means being an elite run team
You don’t stop and offense by keeping them off the field you stop them by defending them.
Staying on the field and not scoring points is not better than scoring points.
Time of possession is meaningless if you aren’t stopping the other team and scoring yourself. Losing 28-14 when each team gets 8 drives is no better than losing 42-21 when each team has 12.

Hope Develin can return but neck injuries can be very tricky. I remember Andy Katenmoyer, all-everything LB out of Ohio State, who suffered a neck injury and never came back. We have Jakob Johnson returning, hopefully. Also, Jeremy Hill is taking tryouts and he knows the Pats system to at least a limited extent. As for a blocking TE, Matt Lengel, at 6-7, 265, at least has the requisite size.

What does that have to do with what I posted?

Okay, I'll play...you posted the absolute of "Teams that are winning run, teams that are losing pass." No caveat no clarification.

The Patriots won both those Super Bowls (and most of the games those years) passing the ball more than running it.

There are trends, but there are not absolutes in football.

They were losing most of those games and throwing, proving my point.
Teams that are ahead run the ball more to protect the lead and teams that are behind throw the ball more to come back.

my point is that you can’t say high run/pass ratios causes winning because winning causes higher run/pass ratios. I think it’s pretty obvious that we are talking about the scoreboard affecting play calls not that a trailing team throwing a lot can’t come back and win.

With who? Slow plodder Sony? Thanks for the laugh

All I know is I liked what I saw at the end of last year with our running game, cause it's more reliable than a passing offense that doesn't run well. Trent Brown was ridiculous, I hope he's available down the road somehow.

We would not have gotten to the SB with that running game without the GOAT.

We need receivers that can beat man coverage. Edelman can. That’s it.

We could probably scheme Harry open for back shoulders and screens. He could be as effective as David Givens on the quick screen, but not split wide on the line where corners are just manning him up.

Rub routes and stacked releases.

I think a true #1 WR would spread opponents too thin. A Good TE either move or block could be used. You can run out of spread too, especially with weapons that command a double team.

It just makes sense going forward doesn’t it? Given the uncertainty we are facing at QB with Brady’s looming decision. If he leaves our options are Stidham who is an unknown, a draft pick who will take time to develop, or a veteran on the market. I happen to favor the latter, where Bridgewater is probably the best QB that will actually be available to us, and he’s a QB that works best with a run oriented team. Regardless of who we sign it’s new QB in a new system so adjustment will be needed. And if Brady returns he’s at the age where decline can be sudden and very rapid, like Peyton Manning in the middle of the season in Denver.

It’s a period of transition for us. And every scenario has a certain degree of uncertainty in the passing game. So why not become a run oriented team? We are currently 60-40 pass to run. Let’s aim for 50-50 or 55-45 run or more. It would provide cushion for whoever is playing QB. And it would help us produce offense on the ground with our current shortage of reliable receivers

We’ll still have Michel obviously. And we can draft a running back in the 1st round. Some of the mocks don’t have any RBs going in round 1, so we should have our pick of guys like Cam Akers, Travis Etienne, Najee Harris, J.K. Dobbins, etc and maybe a chance to get a second one of these guys in round 2 if we wanted. Then sign another guy on the market in 2021, someone like Dalvin Cook or Alvin Kamara, there will be a lot of good RBs available that year. That will give us a deep stable of playmaking backs, which will help the younger ones develop

Let’s play power football
What San Francisco is doing approximates what you're talking about.
