Suggestion: Trade for Manny Sanders

Secondly, 2007 was a terrible draft class no matter how you try and spin it.

Not spinning anything. I don't expect lower round draft picks to make the team, and 2007 was all lower rounders except for Meriweather. The result met my expectation.

Yes, he was acceptable. He was a multiple Pro Bowler. I didn't say he was great.
You mean a multiple attendee at the end-of-season popularity exhibition, only because other Safeties couldn't be bothered with going themselves?

They weren’t all lower rounders. And for the record, you should expect mid round picks to make the team because there’s only been one time where a 4th rounder was cut prior to the start of the season.

They were all 4th round or lower other than Meriweather. In a year where the draft pool was notoriously shallow, I did not expect anyone to stick.

Are we looking at 7.5 mill to acquire Sanders or is it less based on the guaranteed money?

I have no idea how it turned into a discussion of the 2007 draft class, but the 2006 and 2009 draft classes were more detrimental to the team.

I pointed that out earlier in the thread. We had a bad stretch of 2006, 2007, and 2009, and despite the lack of success in 3/4 years, the team was still able to turn things around with a 14-2 record in 2010.

Another poster decided to take issue with my 2007 example, so we’ve exchanged a couple/few comments on the subject.

It's kind of a shame that the Steelers matched the deal the Pats made when they first took a shot at Sanders. If they hadn't he'd now have 3 or 4 rings and be a shoe in for the Patriot HOF. That being said it should be remembered that whatever draft capital the Pats would have to relinquish to get Sanders, would likely be lost for a guy who wouldn't be back next season. Not to mention the cap costs to the 2020 cap.

Next year here is a partial list of players who will need to be resigned. Brady, DMac, Collins, Thuney, Shelton, Gordon, Dorsett, AButler, Calhoun, and the 11 other FA's the Pats will have from this current team. Remember this when you think about the $54MM the Pats are expected to have according to OTC. $54MM seems like a lot, but not when you have 20 FA's to sign

And since this has turned into a discussion on the success or failure of drafts , a couple of points.

a. No one should really give a sh!t about a draft that took place over a decade ago.

b. Any draft talk prior to 2015 should be banned due to its relevance.

c. I would suggest that in the end the 2019 draft will be looked back in awe

d. Questioning whether the Harry pick was wise at this point is past stupid

e. Questioning whether the Williams and Harris picks were wise is ever stupider that that.
Williams would be starting on half the teams in the league. The only reason he isn't contributing yet is that JC Jackson is ahead of him. A guy who would be starting on 90% of the league's team, and is the #4 CB here.

Yeah, especially when you consider the fact that Brady will probably take up half of that.

I don't want to say cap hell but...

Just wait for Harry and expect bigger things from Gordon.

Pray that Gronk gets tired selling CBD oils or whatever it is. And comes back in late Nov.

In soup nazi voice: No trade!

I see people throwing around that term a lot but that this is not what cap hell is. We are one restructure away from where we have always been in terms of space. Losing key players of your team to FA and not being able to hold on to everyone is the nominal state.

Cap hell is when you can't even start the year above water and have to keep restructuring and cutting players to just get below. And by passing the bucket down the road you eviscerate any chance of flexibility to strengthen your team for the next 1-2 seasons.

Check out the mid 10s Saints for what cap hell looks like. We are not in a particularly crazy situation at all.

Not only the Steelers matching our offer sheet, but Sanders turning NE down to sign with Denver. That was a real head scratcher for me.

FYI - For those who were bemoaning the loss of getting Jared Cooks for the $BMM 2019 cap hit he could potentially cost the Saints, here is his current production. Thru 4 games, 18 targets, 8 receptions, 90 yds, o TD's 1 fumble.

So the next time you hear some narrative that includes how the Pats "swung and missed" so often at receivers in the off season, BE careful what you wish for.

Honestly I think the Pats should go for Corey Davis. Still think there is a good WR in there. I mean Humphries looked good with an average QB like Winston and now he sucks with the Titans. Not to mention it would be far easier cap wise to manage.

I don’t recall NE even showing interest.
