The score today was misleading. Gunner punt fumble TD and Stidham pick6. This defense gave up zero points and through 3 games has only given up 3 total points.

Another 5 sacks today!! Jaime Collins playing like a MVP candidate. McCourty with 3 int's already. Winovich with multiple games with a sack or half sack.

.

While impressive, it's hard not to look at the competition. If they do this against the likes of Dallas, KC, and Cleveland, they will really turn heads.

If they stay healthy....they will be very tough to score on......Balanced up front along with strong back end play...

Jamie Collins leads the team with 3 sacks, 2 INT's with 74 return yards and defensive TD's, total tackles, solo tackles, tackles for a loss, QB hits, and is second in passes defended...

I've been told here that stats are meaningless, but it sure doesn't seem that way.

they did this against the Rams and Chargers end of last year.

They also got lit up in the 2nd half against KC. And the SB was very impressive. But this is a new season. They've done this against three bad to terrible teams.

I'm not suggesting they won't be elite. But you can't say they truly are until they do this against elite level offenses.

KC game featured 2 bad calls that helped the Chiefs tremendously.

Pittsburgh... game one?

Last year is not this year, this year they are better defensively.

Also the Patriot rushing attack is not as good as last year, so they can't play keep away from opposing defenses the way they did.

The Chiefs received four first downs due to penalties last year in the playoffs, they were only in that game in the 2nd half due to the refs.

Cleveland?

yeah the 1-2 Browns who are averaging 16 ppg are the big test

To all the apprehensive folks (which is a bit understandable), remember that NE has been on this defensive surge since about week 12 of last season. Besides the 2nd half of the AFCCG, we’ve been DOMINANT. Most of the LAC points (AFCD) were garbage time points, so I don’t really worry about that. It’s a trend guys. Don’t you remember what they did in the SB??

Haven't been thrilled with the level of competition.

BUT, you can only play the teams on your schedule and they are professional football teams. They have been extremely dominant and even if they give up points to a team like KC (as they are too good not to score), I trust our offense will be able to put up points (meaning our offense is highly functioning even against an good/elite defense).

A defensive football team, man that is just a joy to watch.

I forget the last time a LB won but Collins is playing like a Defensive MVP player right now....

I agree, to a point. We’ve had many years where the defense let ****ty offenses look good. Difference being, this year they are making ****ty offenses look like exactly that. IMO, that is a very encouraging sign to the legitimacy of this unit.

Take Cleveland out of the equation they are not that good on Offense Mayfield is sucking right now.

Yeah I remember 2 BS pass interference calls. Maybe with the challenge this year, will make up for that

With a now improved defense, I agree. But still let’s talk about it being this all time great unit after we play some good teams. The Dolphins and Jets (minus Darnold) are a huge joke. Let’s see if it is THAT good where it can keep the Chiefs under 20.

Jamie Collins was a fantastic addition this offseason. He is the defensive MVP through three games.

Don't know about historic unit but looks like an elite defense which is enough for me. I remember our defense being very iffy just 2 years ago.

I was honestly pissed off they didn't get the shut out yesterday. This D is friggen ridiculous. Jamie Collins would get defensive player of the year votes right now. The pass rush is monstrous and the defensive backs are incredible. Winovich has been fantastic! Bennett has been solid. Gilmore and McCourty twins tight blanket coverage everywhere. Linebacker speed is elite and way, way, better than past seasons. Phenomenal defense with a chance to go down in history! 105 yards against yesterday a record in the Brady-Belichick era!!!!

I mean, I get that you can only play who's on your schedule. You're right about that. But think about it. It's really hard to hold ANY team in the NFL to the kind of numbers the Patriots have.

Pittsburgh
- Averaged 23.0 points a game against non-NE teams. Scored 3 points against NE. (with Roethlisberger)
- Averaged 250.0 yards a game against non-NE teams. Gained 308 yards against NE. (with Roethlisberger)

Miami
- Averaged 8.0 points a game against non-NE teams. Scored 0 points against NE.
- Averaged 241.5 yards a game against non-NE teams. Gained 184 yards against NE. (95 in garbage time)

NY Jets
- Averaged 9.5 points a game against non-NE teams. Scored 0 points against NE. (scored by the offense)
- Averaged 242.5 yards a game against non-NE teams. Gained 105 yards against NE.

So in total, these three teams have averaged:
- 13.5 points a game against non-NE teams
- 244.7 yards a game against non-NE teams

But against the Patriots, these teams' offenses have produced:
- 1.0 points a game against NE
- 199.0 yards a game against NE

So yeah, these three teams' offenses stink. But it's one thing if the Pats had held them to 13.5 points and 244.7 yards a game. That would be "average" against them. But the Pats have basically completely shut these offenses down COMPLETELY. You just don't do that on a week-in, week-out basis in the NFL. But they have.

In other words, yes, they've played bad competition, but they're utterly DOMINATING this bad competition in ways that their other opponents haven't. You almost literally can't do better than the Pats' D has been doing so far.
