Patriots Closing In On Extension For CB Jonathan Jones - Update: Signed

Hell yeah, I have loved JJones ever since he started here.

IMO I think they see Jones as the next starting FS...whenever that may be. I'm very happy about the extension.

I think they see him as a starting slot corner. This is a crucial full time position nowadays in the NFL that requires a separate skillset than your outside corners. You have more responsibilities in run support, are often the blitzer and need to be much better at running through traffic.

Free Safety is a starting position nowadays in the NFL...it still will be in a couple years. I think he will be amazing at FS if / "when" that happens. Whatever BB decides ... I'm good with.

Great signing. Perfect nickel slot corner

And he has no history of playing it nor is there any reason to think why it would be necessary to convert your slot corner to a totally different position. It makes not much sense.

Tavon Young SCB Ravens: 3 years 25.8 million
Kenny Moore SCB Colts: 4 years 33 million
Justin Coleman SCB Lions: 4 years 36 million
Chris Harris, Jr. SCB Broncos: 1 year 12 million

That's a good point...having one of the fastest corners on your team will not translate to a good FS. Ok

You are suggesting disrupting multiple positions, taking away snaps from others to turn a great slot corner into maybe a good FS with the potential for him being maybe only average.

Or you keep him where he is good and where he earned his contract and try to draft or sign someone else once DMac's time runs out. Only disrupting one position in the process.

It is just not a good use of resources on the one hand and a completely naive simplification of how difficult it is to be a great NFL level safety on the other hand.

Thought for sure he’d be too expensive for BB’s taste. Had accepted he was playing elsewhere in 2020. This is an interesting and welcome report. If true.

That would be a steal. Coleman just signed a $9M/year contract. Jones > Coleman.

Not really . depends also what they have in mind for him in future.
I love JJ but he has some limitations as slot CB while being elite ST.

Amos in my view is significantly better slot CB:
Adrian Amos signed a 4 year, $36,000,000 contract with the Green Bay Packers, including a $11,000,000 signing bonus, $12,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $9,000,000. He got this as UFA.

Also apy of the whole deal will be lowered by the existing 3m/y contract.

Why would you want to take snaps away from anyone ? Bad Idea for what is IMO the best secondary in the NFL. I'd like to keep this train rolling with Jon Jones "whenever" they decide to move on from DMAC....but I understand your concern.

I love the move. If only he had been available for the Eagles SB.

And Butler and Cooks the acrobat and Edelman and Hightower the super bowl hero.

Wow, you really have to subtract a lot to beat this team. Still were in it till the end.

I was completely guessing out of my ass with 7-8m/year, but this is legit analysis.

Ian Rapoport source. I need a real source. Dude's a liar!

Not bad. Would have rather seen KVN or Thuney though.

I mean it is based on the Rapoport tweet but I am sure Dussault double sourced it before putting it on Patriots.com

We need a more accurate source from someone like Trollin' ... I kid I kid

If Jones gets a 4 year extension, then we should compare the 4 years to Amos. I expect $10M a year on the extension.
