Who Is Sony Michel?

Bad offensive line that can’t open holes. Kerryon Johnson was the 1st RB to run for 100 yards for the Lions in 5 years. They were blowing open giant holes in the Pat’s Swiss cheese defense. Put him behind our line and Johnson gets 35 yards. Same for almost any back. Our line is awful. Can’t blame Sony.

Leonard Fournette also struggled last season in his first few games - at least in terms of a YPC standpoint (3.8, 2.9, 3.5, 3.6), as did Joe Mixon throughout the entire year, as did LeVeon Bell in his rookie season, and Melvin Gordon had a rough first season as well. Give it some time before declaring that Michel is a bust.

Problem lies in blocking. And the other defense isn’t as bad as ours.

Well statistically the other defense was as bad as ours. That’s how piss poor the OL played tonight. Made the lions front look great.

The Lions LBs are significantly faster than ours, which was a blessing in this game.

I hate the pick because good RBs can be found in late rounds. Michel looked decent in college but he isn't the case of a "can't miss" RB prospect like Gurley, Zeke, Fournette or Barkley. In addition, Michel has knee issues, we do not know if he will have a long career (especially considering RBs typically don't have long careers to begin with).

We could have drafted defense (anywhere in the front seven) and it could have been an immediate upgrade considering how devoid of talent our front seven is at the moment. Even if the pick busts, I still would have been okay with it because our defense needs to get younger.

With that said, it is early and run blocking as terrible tonight (several plays blown up behind LOS). There is time for him to showcase more.

While I agree that Johnson benefited from the Lions' excellent run-blocking (something they haven't had since probably Barry Sanders), he's a very good RB, and could end up with a Kamara/Hunt-like rookie season.

One clear trend I noticed with him, is his tendency to run parallel to the LOS rather than bust up field. Someone tell him the end zone is up north, not on the sidelines, for Christ’s sake.

I dont mind him as a runner really, the blocking has just been putrid. When hes had room he ran fine.

He is completely lost in the passing game though and that really hurt us.

Bill always seems to overthink things. Everyone and their mother knew NE needed defensive help after the super bowl meltdown, but what does Bill do? Draft 2 offensive players in round 1. And neither of them are helping us. One is on IR and the other looks marginal.

A poor mans Larry Maroney except he does not dance at the LOS because he never gets that far.

Sony looks small and has no power, vision or quickness.

Shouldnt the goal of a RB be to avoid and run away from the defense because Sony runs right at them. Just the opposite of Barry Sanders. Blount is still a beast.

The problem lies with this team had bigger needs almost everywhere defensively and a running back in the 1st round was asinine at the time and everyone knew it.

That's why people are judging Michel harshly, we all knew it was a luxury pick that wasn't needed.

This team is in desperate need of a running game and since the injury to Hill, they don’t really have any other options.

Burkhead should’ve been able to provide a one-two punch, but he’s always injured.

Bount still looked pretty good last night. We should have kept that guy. He loved being a Patriot.

There's nothing wrong with Michel. He wasn't used much as a pass catcher in college; the hands will come to him. They're trying to put him in space and he had a nice 12 yard run when he finally got a clean lane outside the tackles, but too often those plays are getting blown up in the backfield. Contra the poster above who thinks a running back should be "running away from contact" and apparently expects every back to be Barry Sanders, I actually liked the plays where Michel was able to plow ahead into the defense and take an extra two or three yards after he got hit. It's the NFL, running backs can't outrun everyone anymore. (One might wonder how well Sanders would do in a league where linebackers are increasingly as fast as running backs, unless they play for the Patriots).

The more concerning play was when he could have cut into a hole and instead chose to jump outside, looking for the big play. It got stuffed for two yards instead of the five it should have been, and Trent Brown got flagged for holding to boot. But all rookies do that **** because they could do it in college for a big gain. Not in the pros, everyone's too fast.

Johnson looked good because he got to run through holes that you could fit a truck through. Frank Ragnow looks like a special player. Isaiah Wynn is even better. Alas...

In any case, the only problem with Michel was using a 1st rounder on a running back when there were far more glaring holes to fill and it was an extremely deep running back draft. And the fact that they keep trying to get him going, even in situations where it's not necessarily warranted. That said, I expect the latter is because they don't have any receivers who can get open, so they're trying to manufacture yards any way they can. The big thing is that teams can shove two guys on Gronk every down, which means they have a safety near the line, which makes it more difficult to run. Hopefully Gordon and Edelman will alter that situation, because right now teams are playing 8 men in the box against the Patriots and they can't do anything about it.

I don't think it is fair to hate on Isaiah Wynn because he got an Achilles rupture. He was a solid and much needed pick, even if he just plays guard. Michel will be better, he has looked hesitant because he is just now getting into a football groove. You cannot expect a rookie who missed all of training camp to come in and play like a vet with hundreds of NFL carries under his belt.

Defense disrespects the passing game.

What do you think they are going to do?
