When is the date that none of these guys would count against comp pick formula?

There are a few guys on that list that at the right price would be worth a look but we'd have to wait to protect the comp picks.

I like the idea of bring Derrick Johnson in on the cheap for some LB depth. Cushing or Bowman are interesting too but I like DJ more. Cushing offers system experience so that could be nice. Bowman is the youngest of the group and probably plays better at this point but I think he wants to stay on the west coast.

I don't know the date.

In any case, I would consider the 3rd as very important to be protected. I have less concern about the 6ths. In any case, some of these signings would not have compensation high enough to be relevant.

For example, I would give a 6th for any of the players I mentioned if they are deemed worthy of being signed.

Agreed. Overthecap currently has us at 3,3,6,7 with Jeremy Hill’s 1.5m still counting against us. So... if RJF’s deal is enough to qualify for the formula OR there are enough deals still to be signed to push Hill out of the formula (but leaving Fleming in), then we have 5 net losses and a “free” signing that won’t affect the number of picks. If OTC is pegging it right, then the cost to signing another player to a mid level $ deal is probably moving the current 6th to the 7th. No brainer.
Even if things didn’t work in our favor, the cost of losing that 7th for Fleming and getting one of the players mentioned at a team friendly deal is still very good business.

The list is a little out of whack in it's rankings (Reid ahead of Vaccaro and Boston?) but there are some very intriguing players there.

IIRC the cut off date for signings impacting the compensatory pick formula in the past was 2 weeks after the draft.

Don't see how Breeland is interesting in any way. We already have a logjam at CB.

Vaccaro on the other hand could be a good fit to groom behind Chung.

Slight disagreement with you....

Cushing make sense to me for the reasons you cite but that is a body with a lot of miles.

Bowman I don't think is a fit anymore. When he was an All-Pro in 2012 then you could figure it out but hes slowed down considerably.

Chiefs fans will tell you Johnson slowed way down.

IMO the player that makes so much sense for this team is Kenny Vaccaro.

Cushing has a 50% chance of landing on IR and 30% chance of getting another suspension for PEDs. Also he doesn't seem to be a major step over Elandon Roberts to be honest. Except for his cap hit.

Bowman has lost a step and would not help a lot with what seems like the major wish of many Pats fans: a faster LB group. If he comes very cheap I suppose BB can figure out a place but I am not sure he would survive camp.

Derrick Johnson would end up being this years David Harris. Great locker room personality, most probably inactive for most of the games.

I wonder if anyone who watched Barwin last year has any idea if he has anything left.

The Rams want to resign Barwin and he said he wants to return so not sure what the holdup is. I assume its $.

I think Bill is waiting until after the draft to make a decision on a vet.

As you saw I think Vacarro is the guy they need to go after. Hes Chung 2.0 and a 100x upgrade over Jordan Richards.

I like Johnson or Navarro Bowman to add to LB core along with what I feel is a must sign in James Harrison. Johnson wants to play on a top Team.

Three more cheaper FAs that make sense are Kenny Vaccaro who can play LB, S, slot CB. Why the Pats haven't signed him is a question mark? Groans from the audience, get ready.... Of course we can always go back to Richards.

Essentially he takes Richards place as an upgrade, Vaccaro played very decent last year until wrist and core injury. Saints have discussed resign. 7 passes defended and three INTs and 60 tackles in only 12 games. He's only 27.

He can do so many things like Chung. I could see those two playing together.

The second choice to me is a typical BB reclamation product. That might be Luke Joeckel who was rated as one of the best OLT's in the Draft when he was the 2nd pick for then a terrible Jags Team. He was a round peg stuffed in a square hole for the Jags as they forced fed him to RT and he failed. Then Guard....and no there too. He's only 26. He has been screwed up for 5 years, Can Scar develop him? I look at the less talented Waddle that he made into a serviceable OL player

Finally a player who has burned us over the years. That is WR Eric Decker. He was the Titans best player in the playoff game against us. He caught over 50 passes in that weak run oriented offense in 2017. He is a Red Zone force. He's younger than Amendola and JE. He is more dependable than Mitchell with bad knees. I don't even figure in Mitchel in our WR depth. Decker could be a weapon here with vet moves and he is a big WR. He is the same age as Hogan and only one year older than Britt. At 31 he is in better shape than Mitchell who I really like but oh for the knees from College on..........Decker has tortured us. BB takes note. He can play slot or outside.

Another trade makes sense and we have the CAP (or close) to get Mychal Kendricks who played well and would automatically be our fastest (best?) LB. Can't count on Hightower. Our 6th might do it. The Eagles are in CAP hell.

Cousins, the Draft is great but the success ratio in a three year tern is only 17%-20%. So in this years Draft class out of the 7 players we can pick, two (upon average) will make in here by 2021. 30% of every NFL Team is made up of UDFA or street players. Then you have free agent pick ups. Even if we can gather 10 picks, don't count on more than 20% being Pro Bowl, Starter or valued back up.

TB might be gone by three years. We have to have years of indoctrination. I would;d rather have some choice picked Vets to sprinkle in. They are cheap. They are hungry. They want to play. They can play and BB is the best at that game.

So Harrison, Johnson, Vaccaro, Joeckel and Decker on one year contracts. Maybe Vaccaro more years. All cheap but will play extended snaps except Joeckel as he develops.

It will cost us $7.5M for Kendricks but suspect he will be our best LB day one.

Our Team with these players is better that 2017. What Butler got paid will almost pay all.

Thoughts?

The ones at the top I would have interest in are Reid and bowman. DRC if we hadn’t brought in McCourty.

And I know he stunk up the joint in Jax but any chance Dante can work some magic with Joeckel? Basically a camp invite type of deal.

Logjam?

We have 4 almost locks and not much competing for the 5th roster spot, or as competition in case of injuries.

IMHO, the 5th roster spot is wide open. Are last year's Practice Squad binkies causing a log jam with our poster fav Cy Jones?

Obviously the issue is health. If he were 100%, he would have been signed long ago, by someone who would have given much more than we are willing to give for a #4 safety.

The advantage of draft choices is that the 20% who do succeed give us 4 years of good play for relatively little cost.

HOWEVER, I generally agree with your comments. I thought that no one liked bringing old vets more than Belichick. I guess I was wrong. The guaranteed money (and risk) is low. After all, they can be cut before the season starts if they don't work out.

If Kendricks is healthy, he would be a fine addition. And yes, we can come up with the needed cap money for a key addition like him.

I am right there with both of you when it comes to Joeckel as a candidate for a potential low risk/high reward look see deal. Scar has a great track record for maximizing talent and the kid sure had the tools coming out of school but never seemed to get it together following his rookie year ankle injury.

It's not that I have a particular problem with Joeckel.

It's just that I think that Scar will have enough OT projects with Garcia, Jelks and a draftee (and Tobin for that matter).

That presumes that Cannon remains at RT.

Considering a move to LT brings a lot more work.

The best part of Joeckel is he is only 26. No glue factory yet.
