Is Patrick Chung the reason Jordan Richards is still on the team?

So, Richards would be Ok playing defense if he were drafted in the 5th, and should be fired because Belichick drafted him too early.

Actually, you have a HIGHER value on the play of Richards than most.

We want him as a special teamer like Ebner, never to have a defensive rep, except in garbage time, like Ebner.

Let me rephrase , I'm not OK with Richards playing defense at all. I would be ok (kind of ) with the cost/benefit of the pick had BB spent low draft capital on him.

YOUR ANALYSIS
Belichick should have drafted Richards in the 6th instead of the 2nd as a STer. So, now, since Belichick overpaid, Richards isn't worth a roster spot as a STer.

I disagree.
Richards should be evaluated as a STer with lots of experience and value as a Ster, and with no value as a DB.

The frustration of seeing that picture is beyond words. The fact he is wrapping up air is also so incredibly fitting, essentially his career in a microcosm.

You could use several big whiffs from that game. Or the one against the Dolphins when he whiffed on Cutler. Or several against KC in Week 1. Take your pick. He sucks. He needs to stay on the coverage units and out of the defense.

First, Jordan ****ing Richards sucks. I just need to get that out of the way. What a ****ing terrible ****.

Richards is Chung's back-up. But is BB keeping Richards on the team because of how things went with Chung?

Chung was a second round pick who struggled in his first stint with the team. When he left, nobody seemed to care, and then he struggled with Philly and got cut.

Then BB brings him back and he's suddenly one of the most important players on the team. Belichick recently called him "one of the best players in the league." But Belichick also talked about how they misused Chung originally, and how that was the coach's fault. And now that Chung has emerged, I wonder if his success is influencing Bill into thinking Richards is going to emerge similarly.

For one thing, Chung was used as a free safety initially, and Belichick moved him to strong safety. Richards never projected to free safety, sucks at strong safety, and Belichick should move him off the roster.

For another, Chung can tackle. He was always a hard hitter. Richards has missed a lot of tackles. Even the forced fumble earlier in the year feels like it was more of a missed tackle that luckily hit the football than anything else.

I'm all for second and third chances. But even Chung had to get cut to get better. Teammates mentioned he's more detail-oriented and cerebral this time around. So if BB truly believes Richards can be Chung 2.0, he needs to cut him.

Oh what the hell am I talking about? Just ****ing cut the ****er already!

Chung was very active and a good tackler, but couldn't cover. He hurt his shoulder, then he wasn't even a good tackler.

Shoulder healed and he must have worked on his coverage.

Jordan Richards was never good, so he has nothing to go back on.

At this exact point in time, he’s on the roster because he’s cheap and is going to be far from the worst player on the 90 man roster.

Well, it's walking distance.

He's the personal protector, so it's a very good thing that you don't notice him. It's actually a valuable role, and the only reason I'm okay with him coming back for camp next year. Otherwise, I hope he's never on defense again.

Oh Jesus that is not a reason enough to keep that sad sack of a NFL player.

Didn’t Chung work with Revis prior to the 2014 season?

Chung, even at his worst in 2012, still wasnt near as bad as richards defensively . He actually was pretty decent in 2010 and 2011( when healthy) though nothing great.

There's a guy name Jordan Richard play for superbowl??

If not the then what will passed by...

Yeah...he has a Stanford degree, he'll be fine.

Yes, he doesn’t seem crazy like Jonathan Martin...but he also isn’t talented like Richard Sherman.

The question that remains though is why the F Belichick drafted him so high.

BB took Richards where he needed to in order to prevent another team from drafting him before the Pats next pick.

It doesn't matter if Richards (or Tavon Wilson before him) wasn't on the radar of any of the media "draft gurus", or that he didn't work out as a player. BB almost certainly wouldn't have been able to draft Richards in a later round.

Clearly, you're not familiar with how special teams are or how they actually work - how many different roles there are, how vital each role is to executing various designed ST plays, or how the "personal protector" on the punt unit is responsible for calling and adjusting the blocking scheme on the fly.

Would not have been a huge loss.
