Re: Roger Goodell Press Conf

what about placing microphones on defensive linemen to get the opposing offensive signals? what about jamming the opposing offensive coordinator's radio transmissions? is that acceptable to the public too?

You're arguing against yourself now. When apprised that the Dolphins were audiotaping the Patriots signals, the NFL's Steve Alic said, "That's football." On multiple other occasions, the NFL has stated that stealing signals is not against the rules.

Stick to your other argument. It's a stronger one. We all know that Goodell was lying through his teeth today, he was in pure PR mode. Just like he was lying earlier in the year when he came down with the ruling.

These are the facts:

--The NFL is not against stealing signals. There's no rule against it.
--The Patriots violated a rule against filming from a non-enclosed area. When the Jets admitted doing the same thing, the NFL said it didn't care.
--The Patriots disobeyed a league memo.
--The Patriots did gain an advantage by stealing the opposing coaches' signals. That's why they were doing it.
--Gaining an advantage by stealing signals is not against the rules. It's legal.
--Good coaches steal signals. Bad coaches are too lazy to do it.
--Goodell knows that the league is so screwed up on this issue that he thought the best way to present it to congress is to simply lie about it.

--This was one big clusterfudge and the Patriots deserve to get their draft choice back.

LOL, it's brutal. I had the misfortune of switching the station to Mike & Mike this morning. One idiot Mike was wondering how making Spygate an issue in Congress is any different than Steroids. And when other idiot Mike explained that steroids affects more than just MLB players, he said "maybe this does, too and we just don't know it yet." I mean, holy crap, why are people so damn desperate to hate the Pats?

Greenberg and Golic also followed that up with saying the whole thing is ridiculous. Greenberg specifically said that he put it behind him a while ago and Specter should do the same.

I swear, I have no idea why this place has such a bug up its ass about Mike & Mike.

Re: Roger Goodell Press Conf

No, I'm with you, Goodell said what he had to there, no doubts - it's just that ESPN is picking that one line out of the whole thing to try and smear the Pats some more.

If this type of cheating is indeed widespread, the time to say so would have been back when this first broke.

If Goodell had said then "this is a practice that is widely used by many teams, and though technically against league rules, does not inherently violate the spirit of competition or provide an advantage to any one team" than everything would have been gravy.

I'm not saying I'm 100% sure multiple teams did this (though I personally believe this), but if Goodell were to come out and say so now, when the public and the media have already long since decided that taping signals is akin to murdering babies, the NFL would stand to be enormously hurt by it.

I bet Goodell realizes this became such a big deal because of his punishment, and silence on the issue, and if he had it to do over again I bet he would do things differently.

the new york times went and found him Einstein, he's not looking for attention because he knows krafty would take him for all he's worth.

Golf course boy knows nothing.
If he knew something, why didn't the NY Times find him 18 weeks ago, EINSTEIN!

Oh that's right, because he knows nothing.
you're too stupid to post here.

I agree. He F'd up by letting the situation get out of control.

It's funny, I was out of the country for week 1 of the season. First thing when I landed in Boston was call the fam, first thing out of their mouths is all this talk of the Pats video-taping defensive signals. My response: "so what?" I figured it would be about on par with the allegations of tampering with the Jets, something that the general public would never even care about, know about or understand.

It's funny looking back on the whole thing now when I was coming from that perspective, just coming into the story mid-way not realizing that a witchhunt was on.

It really looked like that was going to be all there was to it at first. I remember it took several days to really pick up steam, and then it just spiraled out of control as we all know.

I don't think today's events will really change much.

Pats fans have long believed that it was overblown, the hater segment has long believed the exact opposite. Neither of those opinions are likely to change. Expecting people so blinded by hate and jealousy to look rationally at often complicated facts is unfortunately asking too much of human intelligence.

I'll just be happy knowing that I was correct in my belief that it was no big deal.

Re: Roger Goodell Press Conf

Can some one give me a timeline in September because I think I am remembering things incorrectly. I thought the Pats were punished (the fine and the pick) and part of that punishment was turning over the other tapes, which were subsequently destroyed.

My point in asking is that one reason Pushover Goodell didn't have this press conference to clarify things back in September was because upon receiving the other tapes he realized that if the truth came out about them, the punishment would seem far too severe for the actual offense and the NFL overreacted to public sentiment (which it has done far too often under Goodell's watch). Of course, if the NFL got the tapes before the punishment, then this argument goes out the window.

God, I am tired of this issue.

Re: Roger Goodell Press Conf

but why does it have to be in favor of the patriots? what if there really is more than meets the eye here? what if the stuff goodell covered up would tarnish the league forever if revealed because they just crowned the particular team champion and greatest in the history of the league? do you understand how much the league would be hurt by that? why is it that the patriots somehow are the victim here? that's the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

No, it can't be higher than #2, because the dumbest thing I've ever heard is whining about how Goodell needs to tell us what was on the tapes, and then when he does, saying he's still covering up because you don't like the answer.

What if, what if, what if? People can create whatever doubts they want in their minds, it ain't going to lead anywhere.

How do you know that lizard people aren't secretly controlling the world from deep underground? How do we know that we're not all just living in some computer simulation created by evil-robot overlords? Gee, I don't know, but I think I'm pretty sure at this point. Feel free to continue wearing your tin foil hat, I'm going to go hang out with my good friends logic and perspective, if it's okay with you.

My God are you this stupid? There would be 100 times the damage done to the NFL if it came out that every team was bending the rules in some fashion.

Re: Roger Goodell Press Conf

I find it kind of telling that Florio of PFT was all over the NYT article this morning and hasn't posted a word after Goodell's press conference. Maybe he's just busy, but he's clearly hitched his wagon to thier being something much much worse going on with Spygate. I am very curious what his response to the Commish's presser will be. Easterbrook too...

Any time I switch the dial to them, they are saying something remarkably stupid. Maybe it's a small sample size.

I'll tell you right now: Either ignore it completely (most likely) or spin it in such a way that it makes the Pats look bad. I can almost promise you that will be the outcome for Easterbrook.

But who cares? We were right, so I'm going to take some quiet satisfaction in that no matter what the media says.

He felt the same way about the Moss 'Battery' incident.....there's much more to it...blah, blah, blah. Then no comment on it after more details are revealed.

He's a gossip girl....nothing more.

You're going about this completely the wrong way by saying there is some sort of cover up by the NFL. I believe Goodell, I think he's being honest, and I think the reason he destroyed those tapes is because he was pissed that one was leaked.

So I think there's very little chance Goodell is hiding anything.

Now if you want to argue that Belichick held something back from Goodell, well, that to me is a lot more believable. But whatever it was, it's long since been destroyed. If anything comes out from this Walsh person, it'll be his word against the Pats. And if there's no proof, and the guy himself says he has no tape, then nothing else will come of this.

Re: Roger Goodell Press Conf

I gotta say after watching even the maroons on the NFLN desk grapple with this post PC, Trent Dilfer has a future in the business, and Rich Eisen better watch his back cause this guy is not only intelligent and articulate, he plays the game.

At the end of the day the Patriots got punished as they did to set an example. Sucks to be us but it happens in all the time in life. Some tried to make more of the infraction than it was, and Goodell initially listened to them. After the fact he also listened to the highly credentialed voices who told him this is done all the time, and that's not all teams are doing to gain a competitive advantage and the underlying information resides with any team who wanted it whether they gathered it legally or illegally, as Dilfer just attested to.

At the end of the day this organization wins because they're smarter than their competition. Did they cross a technical line when they used a camera placed in violation of the rule as stated in the Game Manuel to collect signals as opposed to doing it by some other means - yeah. But that's all it ever was. Then a bunch of idiots who live in glass houses, or are too stupid to be pushing information and preparation envelopes themselves, saw a chance to pile on in hopes of derailing a dynasty they cannot compete with. Goodell knows that now. And so does anyone with half a brain who listened to or read what he said today.

Is it over...for all intents and purposes yes. But there are so many people out there with an axe to grind and way less than half a brain to grind it with it will continue to be an issue for those who want it to be probably 'til the day they die.

Re: Roger Goodell Press Conf

That's what I want to know. Who is it? Billick? Gruden?

Dungy? ;)

Herm. I think the week of all this crap going on Herm said that he remembers waving at one of the cameras.

Re: Roger Goodell Press Conf

The way ESPN is spinning it, look out for Matt Walsh. They're saying the NFL did not complete and investigation because they did not contact him. He's definitely looking for 15 minutes, this could get interesting.
