Congrats to the patriots for making it to the Super Bowl.

Earlier in the year when this team was 2 and 2, there was no thoughts that we would get this far, especially after we lost Hightower,

Clearly bill needs to spend a lot of draft capital on defense, edge rushers and linebackers and a corner.

Brady is amazing! Wow! Just think - no Edelman, no Mitchell, no cooks, no Bennett, and he threw for 500! He is beyond great.

This one is going to hurt for a while, but I am still very proud to be a period fan!!!!

Looking forward to DYJ3 when we find out from the always enlightening Matt Patricia just how he knew that benching Butler in favor of an all-star unit of Rowe, Bademosi and Richards would help propel the Patriots to their sixth--oh, right.

You are barking at the wrong tree. The buck stops with BB and not MP on a benching like that.

I know. I was just thinking of the scenes in DYJ2 where Matty P reveled over predicting what the officiating crew would do and wanted to twist the knife in his fat red ass.

What is your issue with Patricia ? The game was a dud on defense but he worked his ass off with a rather untalented unit this year. I mean the ceiling for most of those players is pretty low...

god help me- i just got into an hour long debate about spygate and cheating. person wouldn't believe me that it was us filming from an illegal location and claimed no one would ever be allowed to spy on someone's signals. would only ever accept it if i could show it to him in the rulebook. no idea how to find that.
and debated the relevance of brady's phone in deflate gate. the worst.

only way to make a sb loss worse. infuriate me more.

I am curious to see what BB the gm will do in the offseason. The butler thing leaves a sour taste in my mouth. This defense might need a complete overhaul upfront. They got manhandled by the philly OL.

Probably my last thoughts of the night on this...

I can't wrap my mind around the massive luxuries afforded to Belichick, mainly by Brady. First, there's Brady's contract which comes at a whopping discount - a cap hit that's been 50% off for the last few years. That's well over $10M per year he's saving the team.

Secondly, and perhaps equally as big of a luxury is Brady's ability to weaponize mid-late round or castoff skill position players. It's incredible how he's done it throughout his entire career. This affords the team to focus more on defense in the higher rounds of the draft.

There's no way such an abysmal, shaky defense should be out there (which showed flashes of this frustrating play throughout the year).

Injuries are no excuse either. Eagles had their fair share this year too.

Puzzled over the decision on Butler. I'll wait to see what information comes out on that. Such an unfortunate finale to his Patriots career (I assume).

With that said, and though it was a higher scoring affair than expected, the game played out pretty much like nearly every SB and nearly every big game the second half of this Patriots season: it came down to the final 2 minutes. And the Patriots were virtually right where they wanted to be (an extra 30 or 40 seconds or another timeout would have made it picture perfect). The Patriots were down 5 points, 2+ minutes on the clock, and a timeout in the bank as well as the two minute warning. This was it and considering the Patriots were moving the ball almost at will since the third quarter and the Eagles D seemed gassed (the 2 minute O would have kept the same gassed players on the field), this SB victory was friggin tantalizingly right there, damn! I assume(?) I'm not alone in big confidence the Patriots 2 minute O was going to slice and dice the Eagles D and score. And I shouldn't have said it out loud (bad juju) but I said to my buddy 'just no damned fluke turnover and we got this!'. Then most unfortunately the Eagle pass rusher got a good surge and made a good play to slap the ball loose that also bounced right to another Eagle player -- not even a scrum/digging for the chance to keep possession and still IMHO easily get it done -- and that was that. Damned chance of a strip fumble and recovery by the Eagles is so small...but it happened...it is what it is...Patriots weren't able to convert what IMHO was something this team was primed to do, equipped to do better than any, ready to knife through them and take it home. Too damn bad as it was another legendary 2 minute moment for the SB trophy case.

**** happens. There's certainly some genuine bad decisions/mistakes to reflect on yet the failure of that oh so sweet moment of 2+ minutes with first down and SB win to go against that gassed Eagle D that IMHO seemed no longer capable of defending the Patriots is what hits me as the bitterest of disappointments.

Congrats to the Eagles. We're onto the 2018 season...

I don't know. This loss sucks but 42 and 46 were worse. Having 5 sort of helps with perspective. The more I think about it the more this game reminds me of 46--it had that throwback feel to the 2011-2012 teams: the defense giving up a backbreaking drive when it mattered most. Also, the offensive line caving at the worst possible moment (though this was partially due to the Eagles knowing the Pats were in a must-pass situation).

Also, I don't wanna be too hard on Brandin Cooks cause I know he had a concussion and all, but he was running around out there like a deer on acid. First the stupid hurdle for no reason, then running in circles before he got hammered. Not like the offense really needed him, though that's not a great sign either.

Brady has carried lousy defenses before. Tonight was pathetic. I will never get the butler thing

I'm still trying to wrap my head around what I just saw.

A Pats team put up the most points in regulation of their 10 Super Bowls and lost?

The 40yr old GOAT threw for over 500yds?

A Nick Foles offense scored on 8 of 10 possessions?

Malcolm Butler gets reps all week with the starters, warms up with the starters and then is told he's not starting, sees zero defensive snaps and BB says this is not disciplinary? WTF happened between Friday practice and the end of warmups today?

On the balance, 2017 was an impressive title defense attempt. Just a really strange ending.

Regards,
Chris

honestly, I prayed for an onside kick at that point because I knew if the defense came back on the field that lead we had would be gone.

I agree. I had zero faith in the D other than maybe force a FG instead of give up a TD (sad but that was the best hope). But the part that doesn't add up is backing up in the game that far. The game evolved into what it was for whatever poor decisions -- an all offense, no defense affair for both teams. And given that unfortunate but stark reality, the place to be in a game like that is: get the ball with enough time to score but leave no time for the other team to score. Right where we wanted to be!
I give it up for the good play the Eagle player made but it was more fluke than anything -- the chances of it happening were remote. Even if Brady gets sacked the Patriots were still going to go onto the next play and slice up the Eagles D that, just like our D, couldn't stop anything.
Despite the shockingly impotent D as well as some playcalls on O that I was astonished over (and STs that teetered on disaster multiple times), the god F;n d%#*!@t game ended up in perfect position to take it home. Tough to see it not get taken home...

At least we'll have Edelman back next year. If that taught us anything, it's apparently more important than whatever ******ed ******** Belichick cooks up in the super bowl that entails our CB2 not playing
