    By: Russ Goldman

Which young Patriots wide receiver will step up his game this season? He could be a difference maker as the season goes on....

Keep an eye out for Philly receivers arrested on gun charges, I guess. Seriously, i don't see the Gaffney Parallels. They have an oco and an experienced vet in Branch, with TEs and slot receiver Welker. Tate or Price will need to find roles somewhere. Branch is pretty much the versatile receiver Gaffney was.

Thanks for commenting. The parallel to Gaffney is that I think one of those 3 receivers will need to contribute this season. Gaffney became a reliable receiver who could be counted on beyond the 3 other starters in 2007.

I am curious to see if any of these 3 receivers will be a solid contributor, and be another reliable option for Brady.

Whether you like Gaffney or not he was a solid contributor. I want to see who can step up to play that role.

    Thanks again for commenting.

Which receiver is most likely to drop a game-winning pass in this year's Colts game? That's a tough one...I'd say Slater...or Tate.

    ( I kid)

Gaffney was a pretty high draft pick. 33rd overall. Was struggling to find his niche until he got here. Agree with Ray. Don't see a comp to him. I think Edelman will produce more than Tate or Price. But, reports indicate Price is looking pretty good at camp. I've heard Troy Brown on WEEI comment on Tate. He said he just doesn't see the route running to make it in New England. Troy knows a heckuva lot more about wr's than me. So, I'll agree with him.

There is nobody comparable on the roster. And the only reason Gaffney got his chance here was that the Pats had absolutely nothing at the position. Gaffney would not have started over Branch, Ochocinco, or Welker.

2007: Moss, Welker, Stallworth, Gaffney, Watson

2011: Ochocinco, Welker, Branch, Gronkowski, Hernandez

The receiving corps of 2007 was the best in football that year, and just as good, or if not, better than the Packers today. 4 reliable WRs and a decent TE. This year, it could be even better. A proven superstar in Ocho, a reliable veteran in Branch and 2 reliable TEs. I think the bar could be raised this year. Heck, if Tate can step up this year, it could be even better.

I liked Gaffney a lot actually. I'm sorry that I didn't see a parallel between picking up Gaffney in midseason when we had no one, then having a savvy veteran as a versatile receiver with Moss and Stallworth.

As I said, the other two are young and unproven and there's not as much space to fill IMO, so they need to create a role.

Didn't mean to get on your bad side, I just don't see a real parallel to Gaffney for a lot of reasons, mainly being that Gaffney was really our #2, and we already have two in ocho and Branch.

I made a joke, but I like gaffney. I think if we needed to pick up a veteran it would be more similar, but with all the running backs, TEs and Welker, I don't see a crucial role left (barring injury) which I think Gaffney had, much more than Stallworth.

I would expect the occasional deep pattern might be a way to make your bones, which wasn't the case when we had Moss.

Didn't mean to seem like I was criticizing your article, just treated it like a post and gave my opinion. Love Gaffney, I've always been a supporter, but Branch and ocho might take up most of those routes IMO.

    TAYLOR PRICE

getting wicked appraisal from Branch and others. Branch called him a complete WR that will only get better and better w/ time. Branch really likes Price's skill set:-size,speed and route running.

He caught a 60 yarder from Mallet a few days ago in camp.

There is a Herald article- about what I just stated

it seems Tate may be odd man out. His route running is very poor considering how long he has been in organization. Trade Tate if we can't carry all the notable names.

I had this same misgiving about Tate, I thought if they keep he would be the odd man out with Price sticking. If Troy is saying that it means a lot more than my musings.

Yeah, It seems Tate had opportunity and didn't answer that door. Not that I'm for judging someone on short time, but i've come to realize, there's always another player thats starting to "get it" whether on your team or someone else's.

Looks like Price or Tate need to break out and likely prove they can "stretch the field" (hate that expression) from what I've heard about ocho, that he's less of a breakaway threat than in the past.

    Disable Jersey

Tough to expect a Gaffney with this crew. The tight ends would seem likely to get in the way of that.

Are you having trouble distinguishing one Florida Gator from the next?

Let me assist with this pop quiz:

I just don't understand how/why WR's decide to limit their success by not putting in the time and effort to learn route running. This isn't rocket science, it can't be about a lack of intelligence. There's millions of dollars in front of them and they choose to reduce their chance of grabbing some or all of it. Mind boggling.

Route running also requires fast feet, good hips and etc. Some guys don't have it.
