What to do with Wes Welker?

Decker and Thomas are on their rookie deals. So there isn't a TON of money tied up there. Maybe 3Mill in total.

Similar to Gronk/AH...they have to look to the future and eventually pay them, right?

Working out well so far... And Manning's neck is better now than it's been in years. And that thing with the forehead that sits atop it has always been pretty valuable... Although the Broncos structured his deal with neck injury protection bailouts through 2014 and no dead cap unless they choose to restructure at some point for flexibility when the cap begins to rise substantially in 2015-16. And they have more cap space than what it would cost them to sign Welker. That $11M is just carryover unused in 2012.

There is also this thing known as the draft where they will likely focus attention where replacements to their D and upgrades or eventual replacements elsewhere are concerned. Kind of like what we do.

Not buying it, Mo. They'll invest mega $$$ in a 32-year WR when Decker/Thomas are young, already have rapport with Manning and need to be paid down the road. We'll agree to disagree.

Here we go again.....Wes Welker.

I know, I know... another Wes Welker thread but again, this guy basically carried this offense yesterday once again. I understand that Hernandez also had a big game with a few huge drops but Welker was the man once more. I know someone will bring up the dropped touchdown and I also screamed at my television for but just think for a second, without him in that game, I'm not sure if We would've even won it.

I don't even want to make this thread about the "on field" accomplishments such as catches, receptions and yards but more geared towards him as a important peice in this offense as far as just being on the field at all. I understand that this offense is structuring itself for the double TE setup but we've had one game all season where both TEs have been able to play together. The fact of the matter is Wes is always heatlhy for this team. Not only does he bring a key element for this offense but he's barely hurt. Edelman, can't stay on the field. Hernandez is always hurt and lets face it, Gronk has had his issues as well. He gets a pass on that drop when you dive into the bigger scheme. He comanded double coverage for the game and no one could stop him.

Wes takes hit after hit in the middle of the field and continues to provide this offense with stability when the others have fallen. I just can't fathom this organization looking the other way in the offseason, they have to realize what this guy brings to the table and deserves to be overpaid in my opinion. He easily displayed that yesterday.

Thoughts?

It'd be smarter to just franchise him then. He is getting kind of old.

He should agree to a 3 year, 25M, with 12 guaranteed, for the good of the team and his own legacy so to speak.

I see no reason at all for Welker to give the Patriots any break at all, and if I were the Colts, Redskins, Texans, Broncos, Seahawks, Rams, Ravens or any other team that wants to take a big step forward I would Pay him what he's worth, and that is much much more than many Patriot fans seem to grasp.

Welker has 'em by the short hairs. With Edelman made of glass, what choice does BB have? Have Brady break in some new guy.....how's that worked lately? Sure the Pats have doled out big money for Brady's gang....but two (AHern,Edelperson)see the trainers room more than the field and Gronk is is a close third. Only one guy seems to bounce up off the turf week in/week out (selective past memory wiped from memory bank)....the one guy who single-handedly made porn staches cool again...WW. How can BB low ball that kind of production. We're lucky he doesn't want top 3 coin......yet

Broncos: Thomas/Decker...not signing another big $$ receiver.
Steelers: Wallace, Brown, Sanders: Not happening
Ravens: Boldin, Smith, Rice: Not happening
Giants: Cruz (basically same role, Nicks, Hixon, Barden...not happening.

As I said possibly Oakland or SD.

There are 31 other teams in the league besides the Pats. Some of them have money to spend. Like Tampa Bay.

Regarding your assessment of the Steelers, Wallace will be a UFA. So saying that it's not happening is kinda short-sighted on your part.

Don't rule out the Saints, Redskins, Cowboys, Denver, St. Louis, Miami, Tennessee, Houston, or Chicago either.

Re: Here we go again.....Wes Welker.

You should have put your thoughts in one of the other two Welker threads.

Lmao, don't sign Welker so you can pay Eric Decker. Unbelievable.

The inopportune drops are annoying, but I tend to agree that they should just pay the man. Certainly not more than 2-3 years on the contract, though.

Again, Thomas has two years remaining on his deal. Decker has a year left, and tagging a TE isn't particularly costly, so he may as well have 2. In signing the QB Elway committed to winning now or in the near term. He will continue to persue that goal.

Not happening was only meant for NYG. Actually I'd rather pay Wallace than Welker? Is that bad?

:(

Franchise him or expect to pay at least $30M, with half guaranteed (perhaps $6M bonus, $6M 2013 salary, $8M 2014 salary and $10M 2015 salary).

Hold on...Welker will get a three year deal and similar to Gronk/AH the Pats got ahead of the FA window. So you're saying Denver will not do that with Decker/Thomas? Younger WRs with a developed rapport with Manning? Again, agree to disagree. I could be 100% wrong but I just don't see it. Maybe Washington, Dallas, Oakland do spend on him as they have not always been $$ disciplined. What do I know I am just a fan. :)

Re: Here we go again.....Wes Welker.

you could have titled this "What to do with Wes Welker", but there's already a thread with that title.

If the Pats were willing to sign Ocho site unseen as far as Pats perfromance for 5 million they can surely sign a proven player like Welker. Is Welker seeking a big contract- don't doubt it but I doubt it's a cap buster.

If what Welker does is so easy or if anyone can do the same "slot" thing for the Pats why haven't they found that person? JE is the closest they have but he is not nearly as durable and has only recently shown what Welker has been doing for years (with zero sign of slowing down).

Sign him or start the spin machine to get ready for next year when Manning/ Rodgers uses Welker to torture the Pats.

Re: Here we go again.....Wes Welker.

I know, my bad. I saw that thread after I made this one. Feel free to merge.

Eventually, yes.. But you act like there aren't ways to pay them even though, every year, we see teams who are "in cap hell" cut $20-$30 million off their cap, sign players they need, and move one without too much of a hiccup.

The Broncos could easily pay Welker, Thomas and Decker if they wanted to. Thomas will get top money, but Decker won't. Not as a #2 there in Denver. Maybe with someone else, but unlikely.

Also, the devil is in the details. They could structure the contract in such a way that they go up once Welker was gone..

Decker is 25 and his numbers have been decent. Don't laugh.

I am not saying they CANNOT...just don't think they will invest in a 32-year old receiver. I could be wrong. What do I know? :)

Stockley is the one wes will replace, manning loves his inside guys. When pressure increased the inside guys are critical for quick outs. when brady feels the pressure he will hit wes a few times fast , gets him in rhythm.

if manning wants him to play in denver he will , it helps with koppan there.
stockley cannot play every down and take shots at 38.

yesterday bess was handled by kyle arrington effectively, i can see even dolphins giving a young qb a outlet. i would like to see kyle arrington cover wes.
