What do we do with this guy?

I know we cannot trade him before he signs his tender.

Rumors say he is coming back in week#10 to get service time for the
    season.

I wish we could get him to sign his tender and trade him.

I for one do not want him back (unahappy for week#10).

I would love him back if we could sign him, but that does
not look like it is going to happen (hopefully I am wrong).

I just do not want this guy to waltz into town week#10 as a unahappy player.
He would then be able to walk away after the season to another team after the season
while we have to wait until 2012 to get a 3rd round comp pick at best.

I keep hoping that someone like Jerry Jones will get desperate and want
to trade for Mankins. We let Mankins work out a contract with Dallas
and he then signs his tender and we trade him to Dallas.

Mankins is still alive? I thought he died in a calf-roping accident.

The only thing we can do at this time is withdraw the tender, making him a free agent immediately. I assume you don't want this.

We can't do anything with him if he doesn't sign the tender. If he signs the tender in the next couple days, then we could trade him. Don't hold your breath.

We could withdraw the tender, or cut him after he signs the tender. If he doesn't sign the tender until week 10, he can't be traded, so our options would be:
    a) withdraw the tender. he is an immediate free agent. we might get a comp pick in 2012 (not guaranteed, you realize. If we sign too many FAs next offseason we wil get no comp picks)
    b) when he signs the tender let him play for 6 weeks, & maybe get a comp pick (see a)
    c) when he signs the tender cut him. he is an immediate free agent. we get no comp pick. Plus we have to pay him all the money due because the tender is a fully guaranteed offer.

Which do you prefer? Me, I think why not let him play 6 weeks for minimum money. No matter what course we take, he will be a free agent in 2011. Let's get some use out of him AND a comp pick.

In all seriousness, with the way Belichick has been reshaping the locker room, and the emphasis placed on leadership & chemistry, I just don't see Mankins appearing in week 10 and being inserted into the starting offense. What kind of message would that send? You have Connely, who, granted, would not be starting if Mankins was under contract and active, but who has performed admirably due in no small part to working his ass off.

The O-line is playing well without mankins. I would not be surprised if he was asked to stay away, even if he is under contract and collecting a paycheck. I would not complain one bit if we got nothing for him at the end of the season. Nothing gained, nothing lost except a missed opportunity. It's not going to have any affect on the win column this year, at least.

I agree, this seems to be the best way to go. I heard he may come back early, I heard this on weei, not sure if hes having a change of heart becuase hes bored not playing, not even sure if its true.

This would be my vote. I would rather not see him in a Pats uniform at all this season.

Wouldn't option D be let him play under the tender... then franchise him? then trade him in the offseason?

And that is precisely what is going to happen. The Pats are not going to get better than a 3rd for Mankins, if they get even that. They have more high draft picks in 2011 than they will have roster spots. Any accumulated picks will just be swung for 2012 picks.

Surely the front office has calculated the risk/reward involved and determined the best value scenario for Mankins. My guess is that 7 games (+ playoffs) of angry Mankins + the resulting comp pick is much greater value than would be had in a trade.

Mankins is insurance against Connolly or Neal getting injured. I'd rather have a disgruntled Mankins starting rather than Ojinnaka or Orhnberger.

The cost of keeping Mankins on the team is very little indeed. He would be insurance even if he doesn't play, and 1ould likely bring us a 2012 pick. We are unlikely to sign lots of free agents in 2011, geinve how many youngsters we have from 2009 and 2011, plus all the 2011 draft choices.

Let's trade him to Seattle for a 1st and then welcome him back with open arms around 2015.
