Have to say that if there is one non-Patriot I’m rooting for in the NFL it has to be Matt Cassel. The only player in NFL history to lead a team at QB after never starting a single game in college. It really is remarkable that the Patriots ever drafted him in the first place. What did they see ? Did they realistically envisage him as taking over from Brady ? Whatever the plan was it has ended up giving an NFL career to a kid no other team would likely have ever picked up.
You have to think that if Bernard Pollard hadn’t blown out Tom Brady’s knee in 2008 that Matt would still be a Patriot. It’s ironic that because of a season ending injury delivered by a Kansas City Chief player Matt Cassel has progressed from clipboard holder to starting NFL QB for the very same KC Chiefs.
Watching him against the Colts he looked similar to what I remember from 2008. Not a game winner but not the worst game manager. Never going to be an elite level QB or perhaps even a second or third tier passer. However, he did throw a great pass to Bowe which was a sure fire 6 points until the receiver somehow dropped a simple ball. Delivered a good pass on 4th down late in the game which almost kept Chief hopes alive. On the other hand there were a few passes into the ground and balls floated to nobody in particular. A few too many incompletions.
I get the feeling that Matt will be under pressure to produce bigger numbers. Question I’m asking is do posters think Matt can sustain an NFL career as a starting QB ? Can he produce enough plays to keep his job ? We saw what he could do when he had Welker and Moss to throw to. Perhaps a better receiving core would help Matt out. With what looks like a good D taking shape in Kansas their offence will need to deliver points. Can they do that with Matt ?
Personally I hope he can get it done. Can’t help but like the kid after what he did for us in 2008. The pressure to replace Brady and not make an ass of himself must have been huge. He ended up doing a fantastic job under the circumstances and deserved a crack somewhere else. Have to say if he is ever cut I wouldn’t say no to having him back on the sidelines at Gillette as an experienced back-up.
