I have found thru the years that knowledge is the best way to combat an idiot. So to make sure everyone is brushed up on the rule here it is.
Undoubtedly with the Pats playing the Raiders this week some of us will be having the always fun conversation about whether the Tuck play is legit.
I memorized this back in 02 after it happened and being able to cite the exact rule has made my arguments seem stronger thru the years.
Earlier this season in fact I had this argument and knowing the rule did nothing because the person wanted examples of other instances. The argument began on a friday. Friday night I looked up some instances with Patsfans help and Saterday I was able to give him an article where it occurred a year later in a skins game. I was arguing with one person in particular but coming to this persons aide was a Cowboys fan and he was giving me crap until on that same weekend Romo was apparently sacked in his own endzone only to have the safety overturned by none-other than the Tuck Rule. Needless to say the Cowboys fan is now on my side of the argument.
NFL Rule 3, Section 21, Article 2, Note 2. When [an offensive] player is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of his arm starts a forward pass, even if the player loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body. Also, if the player has tucked the ball into his body and then loses possession, it is a fumble.[4]
