I've been seeing this posted a lot lately. "Why don't we blitz!?" "our DL is doing nothing!"
Let me just point something out to you.
CJ Spiller: 17 carries, 41 yards, 2.4 YPC
EJ Manuel 18/27, 150 yards, 5.6 YPA
The defense gave up one terrible drive to open the second half, but besides that they really dominated the entire game. The offense gave up a free TD and on another drive game the Bills a short field. EJ Manuel completed 2 NFL quality passes (both thanks to blown safety coverage) and that's about it the entire game.
To me it was clear the gameplan was to collapse the pocket, and play disciplined and defend the gaps so CJ couldn't go off for 150 yards. I think people forget how explosive this guy really is. It only takes one long breakaway run and his YPA/total yardage shoots up a ton. I think it's incredibly impressive that we held the most explosive RB in the league to 2.4 YPC.
Furthermore, why do you want to blitz and open up giant holes in coverage for a rookie QB and risk giving up a 50 yard TD when you can force him to string together long, consistent, 15 play drives in order to score?
The defense won us that game, plain and simple. Especially at the end when they forced the Bills to three and out like 3 consecutive times in the 4th to win the game.
