Don Banks' article on this said that it is less about x's and o's and more about practice structure and team building.

Hey, if Harbaugh can give his brother a star receiver for a 6th, surely Belichick can help in training the TB coaching staff.

BB must only being doing this in exchange for Schiano's notes on his last few recruiting classes. Never too early to prepare for the 14, 15, and 16 drafts.

Actually the more I think on this, what's really happening is BB is actively training his successor in the Patriot way. It might not happen for another 5 years, but my bet is that the NEXT Patriot HC is going to be Greg Schiano. Book it.

I'm not sure why people are reading into this... It's not a whale of a lot different than what's been done with the Saints in the past. I think BB likes to get the team extra practical experience during the offseason and he probably has a good enough relationship with Schiano so there's no paranoia between the two about it.

Eh, they said that about McDaniels as well. Let's see what Schiano does with the Bucs first.

there is a timing problem with McDaniels waiting for BB to retire. He isn't.

Schiano is already starting his Pats tenure. Shipping talib for a 4th and blount for a 6th. He might as well trade his 2nd for a 4th every year.

I am sure that Belichick is not too thrilled that this became public information. Typically a leak of this type of news to Banks and SI would not come out of Gillette, which leaves me to believe that the loose lips belong to somebody at One Buc Place.

A spokesman with the Patriots confirmed the meeting with Tampa Bay coaches next week at New England's Gillette Stadium complex, but said the sessions will not be unprecedented in the team's Belichick era. Though he declined to divulge details, the spokesman said the Patriots have had at least one other team's coaching staff in for an offseason visit over the years, and perhaps even visited the staffs of other teams on one or more occasions. In the past, these visits have been conducted somewhat informally and off the radar, never becoming public knowledge, the spokesman said.

Not surprisingly both ESPN and the NFL Network are reporting this SI story as 'wow, this is amazing; it's unprecedented' - despite the comment above to the contrary.

The patriots have joint practices with the Giants every year. Sometimes they have a scrimmage. Now we have an annual preseason "game". I'm sure that the coaches have lots of teaching moments and learning opportunities.

Maybe he's just doing it because they're friends and he respects Schiano.

The fact that the Pats said that "in the past, these visits have been conducted somewhat informally and off the radar, never becoming public knowledge" makes me believe that they were referring to something other than the publicly acknowledged joint practices, scrimmages and preseason games.

Some in the media seems to be taking this news and implying that perhaps this is at minimum a bending of the league rules, if not crossing the line. For example, here is Banks' opinion from the original article:

Perhaps that's because while violating no league policy, from an appearance standpoint, such coaching clinics could be construed to fall under the gray area of fraternization with the competition, at least when it entails two active coaching staffs. The fact that the Bucs and Patriots play in the regular season makes it potentially more of a sensitive topic, but no one would suspect Belichick, of all people, of giving away state secrets.

in a 24/7 media environment with everyone a "reporter" by virtue of smart phones and tablets, i doubt anyone involved thinks that a visit of multiple coaches from one team to the facility of another has any reasonable chance of being kept "secret"

And, instead of assuming that this is 100% a case of Schiano sending his guys to learn at the feet of the Oracle of Foxboro, is it just possible that Bill Belichick, who has drafted four Schiano-recuited-and-trained-players in recent years, actually [cough...clears throat...lowers voice...averts eyes...kind of whispers] actually thinks that HE might have something to learn from Greg?
