I referenced Pat Kirwin's list of keys to NFL roster depth in a thread on Cannon. I tracked down his article. Here's the link:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer...ampionships-so-its-no-surprise-seattle-has-it

His first key is a back up QB who can come in and go 2-2 in four games if the starter misses some time. If you don't have an adequate back up QB you are disqualified. If you make that threshold, here are his remaining 12 keys:

1. Does your team have a real swing offensive tackle, a guy that can play left or right tackle and has experience?

2. Does your team have a solid inside offensive lineman that can play guard or center?

3. Is there a quality second running back that can deliver a 100-yard rushing day if he had to start?

4. Is there a good second tight end on the roster?

5. Can the third wide receiver step up and start in the two-WR packages if a starter went down?

6. Does your team have a designated pass-rush specialist who could play the early downs if need be?

7. Is there a third defensive tackle that not only plays in a rotation but could play the whole game if need be?

8. Is there a quality nickel corner on the roster, since most teams are at least 50 percent sub defenses?

9. Is there a fourth corner for dime packages?

10. Is there a third safety for big nickel defenses?

11. Is there a return specialist that can either handle both punt and kick returns or contribute as a real position player?

12. Does your team have a special-teams linebacker that leads the specials and can play inside linebacker in a pinch?

I think this list from an NFL front-office type probably helps us to understand some roster moves, like extensions for Cannon or Arrington. Kirwin says no team has all of these bases covered. The more items you can check off the list, the better the odds of winning later in the season.

Great list. Thanks for posting.

I'm guessing that Garoppolo is good enough to go 2-2 over an average stretch of games, though the sample size is small. Most teams don't know what they have until they have to throw someone into the fray.

As for the others:

1. Check. Cannon is our swing tackle.

2. Check. Stork, Connolly and Wendell can all play multiple interior positions including center. Fleming and Cannon can fill in at guard if necessary.

3. Check. We've already lost our lead RB, and filled in well with Gray and Blount.

4. Semi-Check. Ground is irreplaceable, and Wright is not a pure tight end, but we've upgraded depth at the position.

5. Not Sure. Dobson went down. Amendola has shown flashes, and could probably step in for Edelman. Wright can play split end and could probably step in for LaFell.

6. Check. We acquired one in Akeem Ayers, who has filled in as a full time DE with Chandler Jones out.

7. Check. Even with Easley injured we have a solid rotation of Wilfork-Siliga-Branch plus Chris Jones.

8. Check. Arrington is our nickel, with Ryan, Dennard and Butler all pretty decent for depth. Best CB depth in the league.

9. Check. See #8 above.

10. Check. Wilson, Harmon and Ebner are decent depth. Wilson, Ebner and LB Jonathan Casillas can all play a hybrid LB/S role in a big nickel.

11. Check. Best STs in the league. Amendola and Blount can handle KRs, and Edelman is one of the best PRs in the league. Slater is the best dedicated STer in the league, and Ebner and Casillas aren't far behind.

12. Check. Casillas fills the bill.

Not perfect, but pretty darn good. Also, BB has addressed #3, 4, 6, 7 and 12 since the start of training camp. It's also more support for the idea that BB will try hard to keep Ayers, Branch and Casillas (#6, 7, 12 and part of 10). He's already locked up Slater and Cannon (#11 and #1). Having a 3rd down rusher who can spell as an effective full time starter and play in a rotation is very, very valuable.

Cannon would be a Chernobyl disaster at LT, so #1 is a big fat No.

All of our C/Gs are starting, so if the question is Do we have a backup to play C/G, then the answer is No.

#5 is self-explanatory: NO.

I don't consider Ayers a "pass-rush specialist"; he more of an all-around guy, so my answer to #6 is No.

I would also answer No to #10; Harmon, Ebner & the Error Repeater are ST-quality, nothing more.

Cannon was good at RT last season so I don't think he would be a disaster at LT. I don't think he would make the pro bowl but I think he could be serviceable.

What about the most important position in the game? Is it presumed that if the QB goes down you pack it in? Vis. 2001 and 2008

That's Kirwin's "point zero," as the OP noted; if you don't have a good backup QB, the rest matters not.

Coaching is not mentioned in that list.

Oh...Nevermind

Roster Depth was subject......my bad :)

I wonder if, in the event Solder missed significant time, Vollmer would swap to LT and Cannon would in at RT. I think Solder has missed 1 game in his career, but I don't remember which, and I don't remember how the team responded with its OL depth chart.

They kicked mankins out to tackle. I think this was the year we lost vollmer too
