In a game the Jets fans were comparing to the ultimate “David and Goliath” takedown, Bill Belichick and the boys’ six-year drought in their quest for a fourth Super Bowl ring ended with a whimper. Not even the occasional spark of brilliance by an individual player could light a fire under the team as a whole.
“This is the most offense I’ve seen all damn day,” one man in a Tom Brady [stats] jersey screamed at the field as his idol scored his final touchdown of the season and the clock ticked down on the Pats’ playoff dreams.
Numbed by the bitter cold, a majority of fans didn’t even stick around to see the 28-21 final result.
“We got nothing going, and this is the end result. It’s pretty much the worst it’s been since 2007,” said Al Rowe of Lynn, with a liberal use of expletives.
Lisa Scarnecchia, daughter of Patriots assistant head coach Dante Scarnecchia, looked as though she’d been hit by a train as she waited inside Gillette Stadium with other players’ quiet, stunned family members.
“I’m sad for my dad — devastated for him,” she said. “He works hard all year. He works his butt off.”
Jets coach Rex Ryan was pelted with ice and soft drinks as he strode off the field past Pats die-hards, but he ignored their taunts.
Asked how they did it, Sean Slinn of Rockland County, N.Y., a gloating Gang Greener, said, “That’s (winning is) all we do. Rex Ryan takes all the pressure off the players. It’s why he talks as much as he does.”
John Manning of Brooklyn, N.Y., said, “We’re New Yorkers. We always believe. This is our year. Make sure you tell people that, this is our year.”
So now it’s up to the Jets to carry the East Coast bragging rights banner into their date with destiny with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday for the AFC Championship and a berth in the Super Bowl.
But for “Pete” of Sutton, it’s home to a warm couch.
“What a waste of a 14-and-2 season,” lamented Pete, who declined to give his last name. “I’m very sad, but I’m walking out with some Jets fans. I’m just trying to find some solace in my friend’s happiness.”
