Schefter also said the Packers were expected to put a claim in, and obviously the Chiefs (3rd priority) probably put one in too.
The Lions just signed a QB today too, Brooks Bollinger.
Agreed but this is the last time I'll say it and I'll move on - I realize we would have traded him if we could but I simply cannot believe we couldn't get SOMETHING.Seems like we could have and should have gotten a pick for this guy. What am I missing?

I'm guessing Detroit claimed him thinking they'll be able to trade him for something, but then that begs the question how were the Pats not able to get anything for him? I mean, no one would give up a 2012 7th round pick!?
I.e., it was more important for them to suddenly waive him for effect than it was for them to seek a 7th rounder or some similar trade.
Reiss reports the Chiefs did not put a claim on O'C. The...Broncos, and Browns were the only other teams to.
There are only two possbilities.
OPTION 1) No one offered as much as a 2012 7th.
OPTION 2) The staff is so incompetent that they didn't bother trying to get a pick for him.
If Detroit trades O'Connell to someone else for a pick in the next two weeks, then Belichick should fire one of his staff.
Again, why trade for something when you can get it for free...
If you expect to be the only potential team of interest, then it makes sense to wait.
If you are indifferent enough not to care if someone else signs him, then wait.
If he is not worth at least a 7th to you, then wait.
If you expect another team to be interested, and he is worth at least a 7th to you, then you should pay the 7th and secure the player.
