Is a player who is put on IR allowed to be with his team during the season on the sidelines or in the locker room?

This is in regards to Brady who should be undergoing surgery soon but wonder if after a few weeks would he be able to hang out on the sidelines maybe with some encouragement and 'big brother' help to Cassel or whoever is the QB at that time or is he banned from being with the team altogether??

They can be at games and practices only they can't play in any games, use to be you could pull a guy off the injured reserve and place them on the active roster after 4 game but I think they changed it to where you have to be out all year.

    Sort of...

You are not allowed to participate in practices when you are on IR. This came out in Matt Walsh / Fabrigate / Lie-gate, the accusation about injured people practicing.

Now if Brady is standing there and giving advice to Cassell, is that "participating" if he isn't physically doing anything on the field?

    I don't know! I hope not.

If Tom fully recovers in SB, will he be allowed to play?

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_does_injured_reserve_work_in_the_NFL

Currently, the NFL's injured reserve rule restricts a player so designated from returning to play during the season that he's placed on the list.

NO..once on IR gone for the year...I think participate means hust that..partake in the practice AS a player...the IR deal was that an IRed player was PART of practice..meaning that..on the sideline...or helping?? I do not believe that is close to a violation..could be wrong..but I THINK that is the way it was.

No. The next time he can participate in a Team Practice/Game is 2009 Passing Camp and 2009 Pre-Season. Of course, off season work outs (OTA's) are before that and he can be there - But that's voluntary.

If you put a player on IR, can you take him off the list 6 months later? If so, can he play?

6 months? You hoping that Brady will be back for those all important games in the month of March?

No. Once a player is on the IR, he is there until the end of the current season, which is the SB.

However, they can reach an injury settlement and become a free agent... but that isn't the way to go...

BB said on the radio this evening that the team had not placed Brady on IR today.

STATEMENT FROM THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS ON TOM BRADY

"After extensive tests this morning, it was revealed that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's left knee, which was injured in the first quarter of yesterday's game, will require surgery. He will be placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the 2008 season."

Note the wording: will be placed, not has been placed. You may both be right. :) / :(

The question, as near as I can tell, is what is meant by "participate" (e.g., does standing on the sidelines count?). I know that David Thomas was in Phoenix for the SB last year, so I don't really know what's allowed and what isn't.

Who would want to stand on the sideline in New England in November and December when you could snuggle up with Giselle in the penthouse flat of a Back Bay condo overlooking the brisk Charles River with a fire going sipping egg nog.

Given that the NFL details everything as to what is possible not..I am sure they know and understand..and will DO what is OK... practice is just that ..working out WITH the team..not on the sideline..but practicing...participating....I do not think watching..being on the sidelines is excluded...I think someone will know..understand..

Can Brady still play in the Pro Bowl if he's on the IR?

that doesn't count as this season does it?

Someone who knows that he can't help the team on the field, but can help them in other ways, and knows that he can do so and still have time for Brazilian supermodels.
