Name the one player, that could be on the board, and you will be very disappointed if the Patriots pass on him.

My one player would be Hightower. To me he seems that he would be the perfect fit for the Patriots. Can play ILB/OLB and even DE in the 4-3.

Imagine a 3-4 with Spikes and Hightower inside- Mayo and Nick on the outside. Imagine a 4-3 with Spikes in the middle and Mayo and Hightower on the outside.

In fact I'd like to see the patriots move up to #20 to get him. Barron would take the sting off a little.

OK, who is the one player at #27 that you would cringe if the Patriots passed on.

I stopped reading when you suggested that Mayo play outside in a 3-4.

    Not happening.

I'd hate for the Pats to pick Barron at 27. First round picks should be long-term starters, not short-term bandaids. If we assume Chung is the Pats' long-term starting SS, I don't want Barron next to him.

I'd be shocked (and disappointed) if Belichick passed on Brockers. The chance to grab a talented DL like that doesn't happen too much. Sure, he came out a year too soon. But all that means is that the Pats can grab him this draft late in the first rather than trying to get into the top 10 for him next year (assuming he's around at 27, which I doubt but many people believe).

LOL... but actually, Mayo could clean up at OLB. I think it could work as far as Mayo goes. The problem with the suggestion is the idea of having Hightower and Spikes lining up together at ILB. Neither one is any good in coverage. I think of them both in the mode of Ted Johnson: downhill run stuffer. That leaves us too exposed in the middle of the field. Someone needs to take the crossing routes.

I don't see a fit for Hightower on the roster, unless we intend to give up on Spikes.

To the question of the OP, my real disappointment would be if we pass on Fletcher Cox or Michael Brockers at 27. There's no reason to think either one would last that long, but I've seen the guy that I wanted drop to us in the past, and watched BB trade away. Mark Ingram, last year, was one... we were so lucky for him to be there, but we traded out of the spot instead of cashing in. Rey Maualuga in 2009 (thank god! I was wrong wrong) and Connor Barwin (who went after we'd taken Ron Brace and Darius Butler).

I hate to say it but Hightower is going to the steelers who have the 24th pick.

Totally agree, but it's almost certain that Brockers won't be there at 27.

I'm just hoping that BB is seeing his next Richard Seymour in Brockers and moves up to get him.

not sure if it is at 27 or 31, but if the patriots stay put I have this sinking feeling that one of those 2 picks is going to be Harrison Smith out of Notre Dame.

Nothing wrong with Smith, he'd do just fine for us.

Honestly, I can't answer the question, of the players who will be left for us I can't get excited about a single one. I doubt we can trade a #1 for a #2 and #1 next year in this draft but I'd be looking to get out of these picks for a #3 and #1 next year. I hate to be a downer but if we left this draft with 2,2,3,3,3,4 and two extra #1s next year I'd consider that a win.

Right now I'm looking at the likes of Reyes, Smith, McClellan as our #1 picks - excuse me for not being able to get excited :(

I guess my answer is that I'll be disappointed if we use our two #1s.

Janoris Jenkins. This guy has a pretty broad range of draftability IMO, but if he's there at 27, then I think he goes a long way towards solving our secondary issues.

Another corner??? I look at a lot of corners and see free safety skills. In Jenkins' case, I see more of a corner, but I really liked what I saw out of McCourty in his limited time at FS. I believe McCourty has the skill set to play FS very well and would be a great complement to Chung.

Then, of course, USE the next 3 picks on pass rush.

Really, I think that you need to watch last year a little more closely. Mayo played outside quite a bit.

Cousins...The Pats biggest need in 2012 to improve the D?

The Pats have not addressed pass rush. No one you mention is that player. We lost two guys with 20 sacks. Scott? Perhaps but Reyes makes no sense as we just picked up Fanene. McClellan is just about a Nink type guy who we have. Smith might be helpful.

Cousins...think pass rush here! The D is going to be worse this year than last believe it or not if BB lets that sit.

But where do you want the pass rush to come from,DL,LB's? We go with Hightower then there are deep DT/DE's in this draft. If the coverage is better then rushers have more time, so do we go with a CB or Safety?

This is getting off topic. I'm looking to see if there are must get players, in the opinions of people here, that we can draft in our drafting positions or by moving up slightly.

I'm personally not as worried as most about the pass rush, as I believe that your point has merit. Not only that, but I also think that scheme is an important aspect that the majority are overlooking. In other words, it will be a collective unit that comes close to producing the same sack numbers..and even then, points allowed are what matters. Just because we lost M.Anderson does not mean that we are doomed at pass rush..far from it.

To answer your question, it's my opinion that Brockers, Cox, Mercilus, Upshaw, and maybe even Hightower would all be players who would warrant moving up.

How disappointed can I be. I expect 27 or 31 to be traded for a 2013 1st plus a 2012 2nd. The only questions for me is which 1st will be traded and how far down in the second will we go.

So you don't want a pro bowl potential safety but you want an inexperienced run stuffing only DT. We have Kyle Love for that.

Because they're all second rounders or worse. I match your lack of excitement in that scenario.

Agree with you on Hightower although Barron's my man. Adding those too would improve our defense no-end. However, I'd play Hightower as the OLB. He's got a pass rush, but more importantly he's good at setting the edge and plays well within his scheme. He did very well shutting down LSU's option game. That he's a superb backup at ILB is a bonus.

I'm not assuming chung is a long term starter at SS... his contract is up in a year, and I'm not sure I'd give him much at this point

as for brockers, the pats have enough slow DL's

ANYONE who is not a pass rusher. Especially any more DBs. The Pats need a pass rush, it has been MIA for years now. Go up and get someone that the other team has to account for.
