Where in the post did it say that Mike Reiss wrote the petition? Go back and read it again. Better yet, go to Mike's blog and check it out before you start tagging his name to random internet articles.
Author! Author!Disclaimer - I email Mike Reiss several times during the year.
All Mike did was mention the petition in his blog. He did not endorse the petition. He did not create the petition. As far as I can tell,
Signatures - Hire Great Coordinators For The New England Patriots
he did not sign the petition.
Mike blogged about it because he cared about what a fan thought about "the Patriots' offensive and defensive coordinator jobs". How dare a member of the media be interested in about what we fans think???
Mike opined "My sense is that fans are watching closely as to how the Patriots fill these spots and that a hire from outside the organization would be welcome because it would represent new ideas after a disappointing end to the 2009 season. "
Are fans watching closely as to how the Patriots fill these spots??
Would fans be happier with a outside hire or with internal hire??

He isn't writing "about" the petition. The petition is used as a point to talk around in his article, which is about how the Patriots handle coordinators.Nobody said that he authored the petition. It's the fact that he's wasting space writing about the petition that people are taking issue with.
The novelty of internet petitions wore off about 10 years ago.

This is kind of a hard one, but a lot of the guys that are on your staff now - as talented as they may be - weren't on your staff before you were Bill Belichick, three-time Super Bowl Champion. I wonder if there isn't a level of awe that they may feel to be on your staff, whereas Josh McDaniels, Tom Dimitroff, Scott Pioli, Charlie Weis, you all came up together. What I'm driving at is are you getting enough pushback from the guys on your staff? Do you know what I mean?
BB: Yeah, absolutely. And I've talked to other coaches about that - coaches that are pretty well established, and I get the nature of your question. There's definitely Romeo [Crennel] or Charlie or somebody; they wouldn't really be afraid to at times say, 'What are you doing? Are you serious? Are you seriously considering that?' And then there is certainly another level of coach that at that time or at this time, they just wouldn't say that to me. And I mean, I understand that and that's ... and I was like that. There was a point in time where I was like that, where I would never say to, whether it was coach [Ted] Marchibroda or Red Miller or whoever, I wouldn't. And then there was a point in time where I would, whether it was Bill [Parcells] or - mostly Bill. There's a point in time where you reach a point or you have a relationship and you feel more comfortable saying things that you just wouldn't have said - even with that guy - a few years earlier. I definitely get where you're at on that and I mean, I understand that. We try to have an open communication, an open forum on some things and some things aren't open. Some things are 'This is the way they're going to be.' But I understand what you're getting at and I think that's something, as a head coach, you have to be conscious of and I am. I'm not saying a do a great job of it. I don't know whether I do or not, but I'm definitely conscious of that and I get what you're saying there.
I considered it a classic "cheese" thread 'elsewhere,' but for this fan base it's a burning desire of pathetic proportions - which makes it a legitimate discussion item in a blog. I'd rather Reiss made the effort to be aware of what fans are complaining about, and other than it's a topic I find annoying, there's no harm in him posting a link for the beer hall Lombardis. My problem with that defense is what it's defending is merely pandering to his audience. Mike knows why they do what they do. He and his peers were actually lauding the approach until very recently when they adopted the fanboy mentality that if we don't win all the time there must be something wrong with Belichick...
Mike knows Pees was a good coordinator who was limited by the talent at his disposal. He knows that many of the the things that Bill (and even Tom) did this season that drove fans batty in hindsight were actually entirely logical and data based decisions. But he also knows that Curren asked a largely hypothetical question based on a media fueled hypothesis that maybe it really had more to do with RAC and Charlie controlling Belichick's arrogant side than anyone imagined... 2007 kind of invalidates that premise, but why let the facts debunk a fun hypothesis. We all know they were a near lock to win at least 3 out of 4 for the forseeable future even as the core defense aged out...and the greedier players defected...and the organization got raided for anything Belichick trained...if only RAC and Charlie had remained to reign Belichick in. And then Pioli left (after by this hypothesis having no positive influence at all...) and Bill surrounded himself with yes men with little more than decades or better experience and obviously lacking the stones to biatch slap the boss periodically as RAC and Charlie must have since we used to succeed then... Experience in the system is now worthless. What we need is fresh perspective (i.e. no system experience) from guys who have failed and are in some cases unemployable at the NFL level who have the name recognition fans assume will empower them to look Bill in the eye and tell him he's wr..wr..wrong and he's losing his fastball and perhaps some of his marbles...
Yeah, it was a real well written letter to Kraft deserving of mention in Mike's ESPN blog because we all know that fans are always ahead of the curve when it comes to deciphering what's wrong with any team...the coordinators suck.
Maybe Ian should just reinstate Mav and NEM.

That ship has sailed. Now he's just another ****amamie talking head who thinks he and his twitter fans may have a better handle on what this team that has won more games and championships than any other in this decade needs to do and they'd be well served to listen up. LOL
