I'm shocked.

New England handing over the 60th overall pick in a deep draft for a nice complementary wide receiver/returner in Wes Welker is laughable.

Don't get me wrong; I know Welker is the man. He is, but not to the point where he'll carry your team. In Miami, he was playing in a good special teams unit and did well. As a receiver he looked like the most dependable of the bunch, but that's only because Joey Harrington was too shy to throw it downfield to either Marty Booker and Chris Chambers. He was still coming in this season as Miami's No. 3 WR. New England just paid a steep price for a solid contributor. And the $38.5 million contract that the Pats are offering Welker is insane. How much of that is guaranteed? I'm guessing a lot.

I am sure Welker will do great in New England. The thing about the Pats is that they're only a couple of players away unlike Miami, which needs a crap load of players. N.E. can afford to trade good picks for players they think will help, and Welker will help. But in Miami's point of view, it just got a great pick for a guy who maxed out his value in '06 due to a crappy QB. And the Fins got Welker for nothing. A free agent pickup.

In the end, both teams got what they want and I think both will see rewards from the move. But the contract that the Pats have ready for Welker is crazy. He hasn't done that much in the NFL. He just got overpaid by a lot.

Five posts, including one double post, way to go assclown. Welker is a better WR than the Patriots could hope to get with that second round pick, the fact that you can't see indicates you know jack about football.

Aside from Branch in the second round, the last three WR's the Patriots picked in round two were Jackson, Johnson and Simmons, all busts, draft picks are not a sure thing ever, Welker is young and a proven NFL talent you oysterbrain.......

The Pats don't need anyone to "carry the team". This is a team that carries each other.

How does 5 yrs, 18 million sound? 10 million guaranteed. This is great, a proven player with more heart than anyone on Miami's offense comes to us for a mere 2nd rounder. Troy Brown in his hey day was easily worth this. Our owner threw in a 7th rounder in good faith for screwing you guys over. What a gentleman.

You Patsy ****es are funny. So arrogant and full of ****. Let's take away your football team for one second and let's see what you've got left to be thankful for living in New England. Well, the rest of your sports teams suck, and last time I checked your towns are made of **** and bricks and full of ugly people with ugly accents. The reason y'all are so arrogant as Patriots fans is because it's all you got. Take Miami fans ... we may have a pourous football team right now, but let me tell you, life is the **** down here, so we'll be okay during the wait for a better team. We've got better weather, better girls, better environment. Even before the Pats were good you fans were annoying. Now, you are just a bunch of loud-mouthed *****es who ride Belichick's coat tails. And I'll even go on and accuse every Pats fan of wanting to suck off Tom Brady, no matter if you're straight or not. You're just living a pathetic life of being a Patriots fan first, lowly New Englander second. Enjoy living in the armpit of America, jackasses.
something tells me this is aquaforever with a different screen name .somebody should check this out.

Not even close to 35 million , more like 10 mill over five years. You think contract numbers is what players actually get? Damn, looks like Graham is getting 30 mill over the next five years by that logic! Welker was a little pricey, but if he does his job he will be worth every cent. if he turns out to be like troy he will be VERY valuable to us. A young Troy Brown in a real system.... Not catching passes from scrubs down in Miami!!! Hell, he could be the next I believe Welker is against the cap for 1.3 mill this year. Branch is in Seattle getting 3 million a year. He was also worth a first rounder, thanks Branch!!!. The only people talking trash about the pats offseason moves are the jelous baby's who have to face them.... Who cares either way, we had 29 million in cap space and 9 draft picks this year including the 2nd rounder we gave up for Wes. Two first rounders to boot! They will draft well on top of the free agent moves. The Thomas deal was awesome considering he could have gotten close to ten mill a year in SF... Keep chuggin that haterade!!!!!!!!!!!! The pats staff should look into hiring some of you experts. Maybe you could help them win three more superbowls in the salery cap era. We still have 12 mill in cap space, more then most teams started with. the pats will manage the cap well like they always do, make moves that make sense, draft well, and compete for a superbowl. The end : )

One of the many articles praising the pats offseason efforts. Weird the only ones who talk the trash are the geeks on rival forums..........

"Welker deal makes sense"

(March 8, 2007) -- With the flurry of signings, cuts and trades over the past several days, even some of the bigger stories have been glossed over. For instance, even though the Broncos have added three big names in tight end Daniel Graham, running back Travis Henry and cornerback Dre' Bly, folks aren't making much of it.

Perhaps that's partly due to the dismal track record that big-name free agents have for improving their new squads. There are countless examples of teams spending good money on a big name, then plugging him into a system he won't work in.

And then there are the Patriots, who are uniquely positioned to have more success in player acquisition than perhaps any other team. Why? Call it the versatility factor.

The Patriots are more creative in their offensive and defensive schemes than just about any other team. Instead of coming up with rigid schemes and forcing players into them, they adapt their schemes to the talent on hand. And when their players can do multiple things, that's when the real fun begins.

The signing of versatile linebacker Adalius Thomas just makes sense.
Need to confuse Peyton Manning? Drop your athletic ends into coverage. Out of defensive backs? Put your wide receiver back there. No running backs? Run a five-wide set. No receivers? Throw to your tight ends. It never seems to end.

That's why anyone who appreciates what this team continues to do had to smile at what the Patriots did in the first week of free agency. Firstly, New England made a point to address its needs, bringing special teams ace Larry Izzo back into the fold while signing blocking tight end Kyle Brady (replacing Graham) and productive running back Sammy Morris (replacing Corey Dillon ).

But where the Patriots were truly golden was in addressing their biggest weaknesses in 2006. Speed at linebacker was a problem, as was production from the receiving corps. But after signing the top free agent available, Adalius Thomas, at linebacker and trading for wide receiver Wes Welker, the Patriots look like they hit home runs once again.

Adalius Thomas can play linebacker. He can play end. He can cover receivers down field. He can rush the passer. He can stuff the run. In short, he's Bill Belichick's dream player. Welker, by comparison, is a limited player, but what limitations those are! In addition to being a first-class kick and punt returner, he's developed himself into a superb possession receiver. Like Troy Brown, he'll do the dirty work and fill in the cracks.

Between the additions of Thomas and Welker and the rest of their offseason moves, the Patriots continue to display that they know what they're doing, and that teams around the league would likely do well to emulate them -- both when it comes to talent acquisition and usage of said talent.

Bills: Ending the speculation, the Bills finally traded running back Willis McGahee. In exchange, Buffalo received three draft picks from the Baltimore Ravens. The Bills may now look to someone like Chris Brown or Dominic Rhodes to replace him ... Buffalo placed a premium on improving its offensive line early in free agency, adding guard Derrick Dockery from Washington, tackle Langston Walker from Oakland and tackle Jason Whittle from Minnesota ... Dockery may replace guard Tutan Reyes, who was released.

Dolphins: The big move is the addition of linebacker Joey Porter, who was released by Pittsburgh. Porter is slowing down, but he should still be an emotional leader for the Dolphins ... Miami is butchering its own roster at the moment, apparently dissatisfied with the previous status quo of mediocrity. The latest cuts included quarterback Joey Harrington, tight end Randy McMichael, defensive end Kevin Carter and guard Jeno James ... One player who will return is defensive tackle Keith Traylor, who re-signed as an unrestricted free agent ... Former Green Bay tight end David Martin was signed as a free agent to replace McMichael ... Miami inked former Chicago safety Cameron Worrell to a two-year deal.

If the entire Dolphins organization (this includes their idiot fans) concentrated more on their team and less on ours, maybe they would have made the playoffs in the last 5 years.
