I will start this by saying that I love the Pats and they are one of the premier teams in all of sports. BB is a MAJOR reason for it but he is not perfect. He has made mistakes like everyone else and the 2006 draft was one of his (and the teams) worst.

It sounds strange when you consider that since the 2006 draft the Pats have gone 49-15 in the reg season, been to the playoffs 3 times (missing only w/o Brady last year) and made it to one Super Bowl, but the Pats 2006 draft is looking more and more like a MAJOR bust and one of the main reasons the Pats are without a 4th championship. Think about it. In the first round the Pats took RB Laurence Maroney at #21 passing on DeAngelo Williams #27, Joseph Addai #30, LenDale White #45 and Maurice Jones-Drew RB #60.
I think most if not all would agree the Pats would be better with one of those other backs.

In the second round the Pats MOVED up to get WR Chad Jackson WR at #36. He last 2 years on the team before being cut. To add insult to injury with the Pats original pick in round two the Packers took WR Greg Jennings who has 178 career catches for 2844 yards and 24 TDs. In fairness to the Pats the 06 draft was not very productive at WR. The only ones who have been productive to date are Santonio Holmes, Jennings, Brandon Marshall and Marques Colston so it's not like there were a ton of studs to pick from.

Round 3, Pats take TE David Thomas. In the 4th round Pats take TE/FB Garrett Mills and K Stephen Gostkowski. Gostkowski has been good to great. Mills and Thomas are gone.

This draft for the PATS has SUCKED. BB and the boys have made some great picks over the years (Brady, Seymour, Light, Mankins, Koppen, Samuel, Wilfork, Mayo) all of the those picks (except Mayo) were 2005 and before. A few more 'hits' in the draft over the last few and maybe the PAts have a 4th (or more) titles.

I think you ARE beating a dead horse, and one that, frankly, isn't worth discussing, so I shan't.

Uhhh how exactly do you know those other running backs would have been better?

Why exactly do you think they are so great?

Williams- A bust until 2008 and competition from the kid from Oregon

Addai- rallied the Colts to last in rushing last year. Had good rookie season then zip.

    Lendale White- Huh?

Jones Drew- Actually backed up Fred Taylor but good player.

Your point Jackson is well taken. I agree, it's plain to see the Pats have done ZERO to bolster the receiving corps 2007-present.

It's like we need a seperate sub-forum for these. Welcome to the I Love the Patriots but... Forum...where members come to kvetch over all the mistakes BB has made on the road to accumulating .750 winning percentage.

20/20 Hindsight is such a wonderful thing. BTW, are you related to Hey Bro or Captain Stone?

    1) Regarding DeAngelo Williams, Joseph Addai and LenDale White. All three of those guys have HUGE blemishes on them. Addai is 26 this year and was a 5th year college RB. His numbers have steadily declined since being drafted. Prior to last season, Williams was considered a bust my MOST Panther fans. LenDale White has also been hit or miss. No. Most of us wouldn't agree that we'd be better with one of those backs. Particularly when you look at the blemished they each have.

    2) Many people considered Jackson to be a steal at the time for the Patriots. You seem to forget that Jackson tore his ACL during his 1st year (late in the season in the AFCCG against the Colts) and missed a full season due to that injury. When he finally seemed to be getting on track, he couldn't earn Brady's trust. Harping on Marques Colston is a joke since everyone, including the Saints, passed on him 6 times. Colston is one of those rare gems one finds..

    3) Dave Thomas - gave the Pats 3 unspectacular, but solid years
3A) Gostkowski - Has made people forget about Adam Vinatieri.
    4) Mills - The Pats wanted to get him to the Practice Squad. Brad Childress decided to "STICK IT" to BB and took him off the waivers.
    5) Ryan O'Callaghan - came in as a rookie and started while Kaczur was unable to play. He beat out Wesley Britt and allowed the Pats to trade Brandon Gorin. Concussion injuries set him out the next 2 years.

    6) Jeremy Mincey -Probably would have stuck with the team if he'd put in the effort in camp. However, he didn't. In fact, his parting comments were "I thought they'd give me a year to learn the defense." What he didn't understand is that he had to work for that chance.

    7) Dan Stevenson - Brough in and didn't make the team out of camp, but was signed to the practice squad. Ended up cut and then signed with the Phins.

    8) LeKevin Smith - A solid prospect. Came in as a 7th rounder and slowly got better every year, playing on special teams and getting snaps in the rotation at DE.

    9) Willie Andrews - A special teams ACE for three years until off-field issues caught up with him..

Was it a great draft? No. But it didn't suck either. You can't say a draft sucked when you get a starting RB, a kicker who is one of the best in the game, and 3 late round players who had 3 years of good contribution

Now, I'm sorry to say, but its pure speculation on your part that had the Pats drafted other people that they would have gotten a 4th Title. There are so many other things that would have helped the Pats get that 4th title that this summation of yours is but 1 of umpteen gazillion possibilties.

Shatch, if you go to the link provided by CTPatsfan, you'll find that the 2nd thread down the same spiel as yours.

Not sure I agree that drafting those "other" players would have secured a 4th title but I do agree with the OP that the '06 Pats draft was a monumental failure.

I still don't get why people actually still think Joseph Addai is much of anything. Quick question. Since the Pats and Colts played in the 2007 season, who has had more 100 yard rushing games, Maroney or Addai? Before you answer, remember that Maroney missed most of the 2008 season. And yes, the answer is Maroney. Maroney has had 4 since November of 2007 and Addai had one and Addai started and played 12 games. In fact, Addai has only one game where he rushed over 80 yards in that period.

Addai benefitted from a fast start and has dropped off to oblivion since. Right now, Maroney is a better RB than Addai. Addai is so bad that the Colts drafted Donald Brown in this year's draft in the first round to replace him as the lead back. The Colts have used two first round picks in three years on a RB because Addai is such a stud.

OK, let's all agree: the things that turned out worst for the team hurt them, and the things that turned out best helped them.

So are there any specific lessons to take from those mistakes other than that we should make decisions that turn out well? :)
