Paddy Chung unhappy (possibly fit?)

I remember when he first came here there was so much fanfare and happiness. A lot of chuck norris type quotes.

Now it's almost as if he's being mocked. "butthurt", etc.? Seems a little unseemly. He tries hard, you have to give him that. Not sure about his play in the passing game, I'm not expert enough to know what he's doing wrong.

I hope he gets some good playing time against the jets and dolphins.

He does try hard but just doesn't have the speed or instinct to cover adequately.

I'd say the instinct is what is lacking the most. It would explain why he's usually found completely out of position.

It's the NFL. Pretty much every player tries hard. Unfortunately, Chung is not good in coverage, and the Patriots' system needs both safeties to be able to cover.

No argument, but Gregory can neither cover nor tackle (although his coverage may be better than Chung's). Just watching the games, after Chung went down the absence of any thump in the Pats backfield was remarkable. In the past, Chung has brought a physical presence to the backfield that is completely absent at the moment. I think McCourty and Chung may be preferable to McCourty and Gregory, at least in certain situtations.

Well, the Patriots sometimes run a 3 safety set, so that mitigates the issue somewhat, in theory. The problem here is that Chung's been playing poorly. If Chung were playing well, this would be a non-issue and he'd be the starter. If he were playing "meh", it would be an issue of whether he was starting or working as the S3. Since he's playing poorly, things like "Gregory is new to the system and will play better as he gets more comfortable" and "Wilson's just a rookie. He'll get better with more playing time" become legitimate opinions/arguments as to why people might not want Chung in the lineup anymore.

It's similar to the QB situation during this past training camp. Hoyer was better than Mallet in the eyes of most, but it wasn't enough of a difference in BB's eyes to keep Mr. Hoyer around.

Just my $.02

Fine to consider the current level of play and also future expectation. Hoyer was better but Mallet had a higher up side (in BBs view anyway). In this situation, Mallet has barely played in the NFL so there is a lot of guesswork. Not so with Gregory at safety, because he has an NFL track record to evaluate. The key is whether you think Chung can or will play better than he was playing. I think that Chung can play better than he was playing before he got injured, and better than Gregory, which is the reason I'd like to see him get some snaps when healthy.

Mallet clearly outplayed Hoyer

I don't think that Mallett necessarily outplayed Hoyer in my opinion, and if he did it probably wasn't "clearly outplayed."

There are factors that went into the decision that allowed Belichick to gamble with just one backup, thus saving a roster spot.

Mallett has much more upside than Hoyer talent-wise, and he was cheap on a rookie deal. There's a good chance that they felt comfortable enough with Mallett's progression and knowledge of the offensive scheme at that point to roll the dice on just 2 QBs rather than 3.

OK, I will rephrase. Because there is nothing KNOWN that has changed.
Again, you need to check your definiton of speculate.

???

Because there is nothing KNOWN is exactly the reason why proponents of either side of the tweet/delete tweet saga are both speculating.

I really don't need to check the definition of the word but since you don't seem to know it, here it is:

To engage in a course of reasoning often based on inconclusive evidence

Well it seems as though there was fire where there was smoke, as Chung was delegated to a backup/rotational role where he only saw 22 of 72 snaps.

McCourty/Gregory were obviously the starting duo, and common sense would suggest that it would remain that way barring an injury.

Al Michaels also mentioned that he was "a healthy scratch" last week, (he actually said the past 2 weeks, but I don't know if I fully believe that) although that certainly isn't the end all/be all on the subject. Mike Reiss also spoke of whether or not Chung "can get his starting job back eventually."

The solid play of Gregory last night only makes that more unlikely unless there is an injury. As I stated before the only way that Chung is going to see more reps is if they go to more of a big nickle package (one of the two nickle subs last night), or he is in there as a TE specialist/more in the box type safety.

There could obviously be an injury that would move him up, but for now we can all be glad that the safety play has improved. That has also made the CB play much better too.
