Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

It all depends on what they're testing. Your pee, it's out quickly, in a couple weeks.

Blood it stays for months.

Hair for 6 months.

IIRC, once players have tested positive, they're subject to increased scrutiny for the rest of their careers. [Until they do, I believe it's one random test per year.]

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

According to my quick research, the Jets have already traded this years 5th rounder to the browns (either in the Braylon trade or the trade on last years draft day that enabled them to draft Sanchez) How can the trade be for a 5th if they don't have a 5th to trade?

2010 NFL Draft Results by Team - ESPN

They are sending them the 5th round pick they got from Philly as part of the Lito Sheppard deal.

A 5th rouder for 12 games of Holmes is a great deal, HOWEVER, he is already in the drug program, so one more and he is done for the year, plus yet another guy in the last year of his contract, and the Jets are back down to 5 draft picks (with only 2 in the top 100). They are building a team to win THIS YEAR, and that is it.

To all the "I wish Holmes was a Patriot crowd": With all of the talk about team chemistry being the downfall of the Pats last year it doesn't surprise me one bit that the Pats wouldn't be interested in Holmes.

The Jets are a good team, with a lot of talent, but talent doesn't always win games.

On the surface this looks like a good deal for the Jets. Maybe Holmes will pull an Irvin Fryar and get his head on straight, but I doubt it.

I still think the Jets strategy of trading up will hurt them in the long run, they are not developing good depth, once a starter start going down to injuries there lack of depth will hurt them. The Pats are deep at every position with the exception of WR, LB and TE. The Pats are VERY deep at OL, DL and DB

In terms of positional strength prior to the draft Jets versus Pats I think it looks like this:

QB: Advantage Pats by a wide margin
RB: Push
TE: Push
OL: Slight Advantage Jets because of Mangold
WR: Advantage Pats Holmes and Welker will probably get back around the same game, Moss, Welker, Edleman > than Edwards, Holmes, Cotchery
LB: Advantage Jets
DL: Advatange Pats
CB: Slight Advantage Jets because of Revis, not Cromartie but I think the Pats have better depth than the Jets but Revis is so good.
Safeties: Push with a slight lean toward the Pats assuming Merriweather continues to get better
Specialist: Push the Pats don't have a punter and the Jets don't have a kicker
Coach: Advantage Pats by a wide margin

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

They traded a 2009 4th and 5th for Sheppard, and got a 2010 5th back. That is the pick that has gone to the Steelers.

ok thanks!!

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

poeple have to stop realizing that it's the quality of picks not the number of contributors you draft that count. the jets didn't have many picks last year but they took Sanchez and Shonn Greene. Those two players carried them into the AFCCG. Therefore, the Jets draft was BETTER last year than ours.

Sanchez did not perform up to a fifth overall pick selection last year and he almost single handily made the Jets miss the playoffs. If it wasn't for the fact the Colts and Bengals rested players their last two games, the storyline right now would be whether Sanchez was really worth the 5th overall pick and whether he will ever be a franchise QB. In fact, the Jets performed well in the playoffs by taking the ball out of his hands and making him a game manager. The jury is definitely out on Sanchez.

As for Greene, he was great for two games in the playoffs and was up and down most of the season.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

Ballsy move, obviously the Jets are going for it all THIS YEAR.

It'l be interesting to watch either way. Smart move, but it's a also a risky strategy. Especially when your QB needs to show a marked improvement from his JaMarcus like numbers.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

Wow, the Steelers must be pissed at Santonio to unload him for so cheap. It could be a great deal for the Jets, depending on how he pans out.

And as for Cromartie, yeah, he basically sucks until he proves otherwise.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

Um, are you kidding? I'll take Dustin Keller any day of the week over Crumpler.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

I, for one, am shocked. If anyone would trade for Holmes, you'd think it would be Oakland or Dallas. :D

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

I would agree with that, but Keller is overrated. Many people talk about this guy as a top TE, but he really isn't very close. He is just better than anything the Pats have right now. Granted that could change if the Pats draft Gresham.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

RB: Push
TE: Push
OL: Slight Advantage Jets because of Mangold

You're kidding? The Jets averaged 4.5 yards per rush. Pats were at 4.1. Pats have three RBs over 32, and the chances of one (or more, god help us if it's Kevin Faulk) breaking down are quite high. And our TE situation is among the league's most mediocre. Don't give me two pushes and a "slight advantage", it's a joke.

CB: Slight Advantage Jets because of Revis, not Cromartie but I think the Pats have better depth than the Jets but Revis is so good.

Slight advantage Jets? SLIGHT? Really?

I think Morris and Taylor could both be gone by the time TC starts and BJGE is probably cut as well.....

Maroney (ugh),Faulk,Some FA RB semi young who gets cut by another team and a 2nd round rookie and possibly a fullback from the late part of the draft could be the RB roster this season.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

My semi-bold prediction: Holmes will not play a down of NFL football this season. Assuming he gets tested at all, I don't see any way he can go without pot for that long, and that's not even counting all of his other problems.

Although I am not going to toute the Pats' running game as anything special, the Jets' average last year doesn't mean much. Most of the carries were made by Thomas Jones who is no longer on the team. The Jets' running game is a bit of an unknown since no one knows if Greene can be nearly as effective as lead RB over a 16 game stretch as Jones was last year or if LT can be effective as a third down back. The Pats' running game definitely has its issues, but so COULD the Jets.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

You have to wonder why the Steelers have dumped him though, considering it's only 14 months since he was the Superbowl MVP and he's a former first round pick.

Have family in PA and they tell me (no inside info) that Holmes has been in the doghouse for a while. If the Steelers didn't win the Super Bowl, he might have been gone before now. He was pretty clueless about why the Steelers moved him so quickly in the middle of the night. He doesn't feel like the 4-game suspension justified the speed of the trade.

My opinion is that this is a solid trade for the Jets. Only worry is that he is a time bomb that will go off during the stretch run. Normally anything lower than a 3rd is reasonable in a risk/reward trade. In this deep draft, a 5th seems like a reasonable adjustment.

This doesn't make any sense from the Steeler perspective. Trading Holmes to a team that you are playing this year and could very well be in the wildcard mix with you? And why not add a conditional 2011 pick into the equation? Given the Steelers progression from a running team to a passing team, losing Holmes' production has to worry them. Ward is older than Moss and generally takes more of a beating. Wallace is young but looks great and Miller is fine...but this isn't the way to help Roethlisberger with the huge number of sacks he takes every year.

From the Pats perspective, this isn't too bad. They will almost certainly face the Jets when Holmes is suspended. The Steelers are a tough roadie this year so throwing their offense into chaos is a good thing. If Sanchez take a huge step forward in his development this year (still isn't running after "minor" surgery) and Holmes can stay clean, they will have the pieces to make a solid playoff run.

I agree. I think come training camp, the RB could be significantly different than it is now. I could see the Pats taking Ryan Matthews if he is available in the second. Pat Hill might be selling the Pats on the guy. He is the up the middle, decisive rusher the Pats tend to like.

Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets

The source said everyone was called and then conceeded the Ravens and possibly the Browns and Bengals were not called. Sounds like a sound source.

Just like everything else Florio posts. ;)
