NFL cap projection is out, per Breer

It's an absolute joke that HErnandez counts against our cap, should get an exemption.

Truly ridiculous. How things like that can go ignored by the league office while they fine Cam Newton for having Under Armor visor clips is baffling, but Goodell and Co. have a knack for circumnavigating decency and common sense.

The fact it's in the CBA doesn't make it less ridiculous. This isn't MLB.

a rule of thumb is to find the 14th/15th highest cap hit, and use that as an estimate.

Thanks ct. I am assuming that is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of how Miguel came up with the 7.62 million dollar projection for 2015 re: Solder's option year, but it's good to know for guys like myself in the future. Much appreciated.

It turns out the OTs a lot more top-heavy than other positions, which explains why in this case it's actually around the 10th highest. ;)

But the "14th" rule is only about $300K off, which isn't terrible when you're talking $7.6M. :)

Miguel's UNOFFICIAL 2014 Patriots Salary Cap Information Page

So we will have 10.3 million in cap room, 13.6 million when we let go of Sopoaga. 14.2 million when we let go of Adrian Wilson. Those two are the only real easy cuts to gain cap space, as Gregory is too good of a safety to cut him for only 1.8 million IMO.

We could have 21.5 million in cap if we let go of Big Vince...(if he's not the same of course)
Say what?

Miguel's UNOFFICIAL 2014 Patriots Salary Cap Information Page

Last updated on December 11, 2013 4:45 PM EDT

According to my figures the Patriots' 2014 current commitment is for $117,464,410 with 53 players. I have the Patriots' 2014 dead money as $5,683,721. $117,464,410 + $5,683,721 = $122,308,131. The 2014 projected cap is $126.3 milion so the Pats are under it by about $4 million.

Many have pointed out his error.

I am wondering however, how we went from about 4 million under as of just a couple/few weeks ago, to adding in the extra space from the increase of 2014 and yet are still coming up with only 4 million?

Is this due to having THAT much money in escalators? That would be somewhat difficult to believe, although I suppose anything is possible.

I'm certainly not questioning Miguel or anyone else who is helpful with these matters or their numbers. I am simply wondering where the 4 million (I believe it was actually at 4.1) from a few weeks ago went? I would think that it'd be closer to having around 6 million or so available for next season, unless we have absolutely nothing whatsoever to carry over--which apparently is a possibility.

Either way, just like always, Belichick will certainly free up extra money with some moves via cuts or extensions/restructures, so that we can aggressively pursue our own free agents along with some of the usual lower level/mid tier signings.

Understanding that it isn't anywhere close to the point of the exercise, there are a lot of much better names on that list when attempting to assess Hightower's value at 8.5 million!

I suppose this is why we have 2 more years minimum to assess his potential and overall value. A lot can happen between now and then, and if it's set up anything like the Solder 5th yr option, a choice wouldn't be needed to be made until spring of 2016, which is still an awful long way off.

I read the whole thread. Thanks to everyone, especially Miguel, for keeping up on how the cap works as well as the particulars of the Patriots' cap situation.

The one certainty appears to be the Patriots in 2014 will be in the positive by around 6 million. Beyond that the real possibility exists it will be many millions above that.
Is there a specific date (say the week after the SB?) that the league/teams update the cap information and the cap picture becomes more precise? Or is determining the precise cap number always a work in progress that never has a certainty to it?

The Patriots have from the end of the 2014 season to the spring of 2015 to pick up the options for Chandler Jones and Hightower.

The precise cap number is usually set during meetings in February. The NFL then usually does a couple of updates between February and the start of the League Year in March to each team's adjusted cap numbers as they figure out LTBE/NTLBEs for the 2013 season.

Just updated the cap numbers and documentation for Isaac Sopoaga since it is apparent that he will trigger his 2014 salary de-escalator lowering his salary from $3,750,000 to $3,500,000. Sopoaga has to play in 50% of the defensive snaps. His current percentage is 35.7%. In order to reach 50% he would have to play every defensive snap in the Patriots' last 3 games.

My cap page will now show his 2014 salary as $3.5 million.

They have 10m to sign rookies, edelmen, possibly talib, Wendell , etc? Doesn't sound like much. Definitely think will fork will get cut and resigned to min plus incentives. Don't think they actually get much cap relief from mankins by cutting him. Maybe he'll be nice enough to take a pay cut for all the years they've overpaid him.

Thinking they keep Kelley if his knee is ok.

This team will be in amazing shape after cutting Wilson and Soap and if we can restructure Vince and Mankins. Hate to say it but there aren't a whole lot of players I would pay 10+ million for outside of a QB. Maybe Watt or Calvin.

Pats could potentially have north of $25 million in cap space if we get Mankins and Vince to take pay cuts. This would mean we could retain McCourty, Talib, and reconstruct our OL. Not gonna lie, the interior line has sucked. Mankins leaves a lot to be desired and at his age isnt worth the money he is making anymore. If we can get Mankin's cap hit down to around 5-6 million sign Mack from the Browns and get a stud Guard in rounds 2-3 of the draft I would be very excited:rocker::rocker:

Mankins isn't the issue inside. Wendell and Connolly are.

Mankins has not been much better than Wendell and Connolly; he certainly is not worth $10.5m a year which is what he is on the books for in 2014.

Upcoming deadline - December 28, 4PM. Pats have to announce how many cap room they want to carry over into 2014. I expect the Pats to declare all of it.

Q. What is the maximum amount of room that a club can carry over?
A. One hundred percent of its remaining room.
