This is bad for those who despise Espn , like alot of us do... I wish Reiss well, but wish it was not with Espn ..

Bad career move. Reiss will be lost in a sea of scrubs at ESPN.

Re: Mike Reiss leaves Globe for ESPNBoston.com [merged]

Ken Fang of BSMW has more:

BREAKING NEWS: ESPNBoston.com Launches 9/14, Steals Mike Reiss From Globe

Apparently ESPN is launching new city-specific sites for all of its ESPN Radio affiliates, ESPN 890 WAMG included, with beat writers and the whole deal like WEEI.com. I wonder if Mike will have a expanded editorial role over the site, like Chris Price has with WEEI.com.

Also, CBS Radio/CBS Sports is launching their own sites for their CBS Radio sports talk affiliates (i.e. 98.5 The Sports Hub), which is why 985TheSportsHub.com has a CBS Sports theme.

It's clear this is the direction modern sports news media is heading. Selfishly, it's nice to have Mike sticking around instead of taking on a national role (yet) with ESPN, like what Tom Curran did with NBC, Bert Breer with SN, and Michael Smith/Peter Gammons with ESPN. And obviously, it's better than having him jump to another city all together, a la Bert Breer to Dallas, Jerome Solomon to Houston, or Mark J. Spears to wherever he went.

Re: Mike Reiss leaves Globe for ESPNBoston.com [merged]

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering 890's 3rd place standing in a now 3 horse race. Maybe they offered him a lot of $$$ to help develop/drive the website hits as a means to attract more listeners to the radio shows. Kind of like what WEEI did with Rob Bradford. Not sure what WBZ is planning to do on the web but heading to 890 doesn't sound like a smart local career move unless Mike believes it will get him national exposure.

Re: Mike Reiss leaves Globe for ESPNBoston.com [merged]

Forgot about Bradford. Him or Price's move to WEEI were up-the-ladder, more exposure, but I'm not sure that's the case with Mike. His move is lateral-at-best in terms of exposure around this city, but obviously it may set him up for more exposure nationally on ESPN (which he has been doing lately on First Take) and an increased role that way, something Bradford and Price's gigs will not, since WEEI only has a loose affiliation with Fox Sports.

Yet another MetroWest Daily News alum, too. First Curran, then Breer, now Reiss all graduating from the MetroWest to bigger and better things. It was good to see Mike work his way from Patriots Football Weekly to the Daily News, to the Globe, and straight to the top of the Globe's football ranks. A beat reporter for a struggling radio station that was life support after Felger's departure isn't the ideal switch, but as stated, it will help him in the long run I think.

Good luck to Reiss. Based on my pure speculation, it seems like he probably has much more job security now based on the uncertain future of the Globe.

Better going down with the sinking ship that is the Globe and traditional news media.

Exactly. You knew he would be evacuating at some point, and now is a good of a time as any.

Just took a spin to Reiss' first post with the Globe, four years and one day ago:

Let's get it on - Reiss' Pieces

I'm guessing his first post with ESPN will look much the same, which will be comforting to many of us here.

Do we expect to hear him on the air regularly? Do they podcast their shows?

Re: Mike Reiss leaves Globe for ESPNBoston.com [merged]

Actually, I think it is a good career move. The Globe has a lot of financial uncertainty. Reiss will now get broadcast exposure at both the local and national level. He is young, smart, and gets stories. Those guys tend to do well at ESPN. Look at Michael Smith. He has done a decent job moving up the later and gets decent amount of time on Sportcenter, NFL Live, etc. It is the old washed up guys who get delegated to Around the Horn.

It is bad for Pats fans because it is almost certain that Reiss will move to the national level at some point in the next few years. Maybe sooner.

Short term it shouldn't change all that much since he will probably have the same columns and features on the ESPN site and will be able to be heard more on the radio.

Good luck Mike whereever this whole thing takes you.

Ha, you got that right with ATH. But I think both Mikes - Smith and Reiss - have potential to become the next Mortensens and Claytons and Schefters. It's only a matter of time; they are both very well-connected.

Look at the big picture, he gets married a couple of years ago, starts a family, and gets his salary gets cut 10% along with his pension and bennies. Unless they change their business model and make more drastic cuts (NYT was way too kind IMO) they will shudder in 18mo or less.

Hes sees a new opportunity where is for a large (at least I think so?) stable organization, has a good health plan and room to grow/move around professionally. An has been mentioned before, with his professionalism, solid reporting and ethics he will certainly get more national exposure.

Sounds to me he made the right decision for himself, his career and his family.

    Congrats, Mike!
