IRC correctly, last year he did not start the season as the #1 RB (Taylor, then Morris). However, you could argue that the Pats really don't have a #1 RB.
Is there any doubt in ANYONE'S mind that Maroney is no longer thought of as the #1 back? - this team is a 3 RB by committee which you will likely see Morris start one week,Taylor the next and Maroney the next ect:
Belichick will probably look at the success these players have had against certain teams and plan who starts accordingly.
Maroney has not earned lead back and is now in the mix - #1 back would only be a title that is not realistic for what some call Maroney the #1
With that being said,I do expect Maroney to be in the backfield in the first snap against the Bengals in week 1 - just my guess

I'd expect the improvement, in terms of run blocking, from replacing Kaczur with Vollmer will far outweigh the downgrade from replacing Mankins with Connolly.
I do agree to a point. Of all RBs the last 3 years and when LM has been healthy, he's accumulated the most # of carries (I take out 2006 as CD was here and 08 he was IR. In 07, he led the team in carries until he got hurt in week 5 or so. With that said, based on the carries, LM has been the #1 RB.
If all stay healthy, I do think that you will see 100 or so carries from each player w/ come playoff/down the stretch time, Taylor emerge as the #1 RB. BB loves the guy.
Connolly is not a downgrade in regards run blocking. Pass blocking is another issue. Certainly Volmer is an upgrade over Kaczur in both run and pass blocking. And a healthy Neal is a big net Plus. When healthy, unlike all last year, Neal is a near Probowl quality G, and unsurpassed as a Pulling Guard.
IMHO the weakest position is Koppen at C, and tough guy Ohrnberger gives Dante and Belichick some flexibility that they have not had recently, even when Hochstein was still here.
Pouncey or Dowd in next years draft, would toughen up that position.
When was the last time a Patriots RB corps all stayed injury free all season?...with these guys age (Morris,Taylor,Faulk and Maroney's annual
injury) its more than likely at least one will be shelved for a bit...hopefully nothing too serious

I think Taylor will be the starter until unseated, but he should be used wisely as not to burn him out during the 16 game season.
This guy is gonna be our version of Chauncey Billups... Suck while he's here, and blow up with some other team down the road.
If he sucks again you won't see him in the NFL, - you might see him in the CFL or some other league - like I said before, very few teams will show an interest in a Pats castoff knowing if he can't succeed in a top heralded system he won't succeed anywhere - This is his FINAL chance to prove he can do it as a Patriot or probably fail in the NFL.

WTF?
Maroney has already shown he's an NFL player. Assuming he does nothing more or less this season vs earlier seasons were the Pats to move on next year, I guarantee another club in the NFL signs and plays him if there's a season.
-phil (certainly hopes Maroney's best is yet to come)
Its all about consistency in this league...you can't have a good game and not have another until 7 or 8 games later - and Maroney has done just that - He has a good game one week and then its 2 months later when he produces again...not good enough, not for the Pats who need his young body to get it done more often.
Whether its because of the OL or not..consistency is what seperates good RBs from mediocre to below average ones.

That's not true at all. Maroney will attract interest as a FA, barring injury, no matter how he does this year. His performance this year will mostly just dictate how much money he can command and how competitive a backfield he lands in.
